John, Did you ever find out any more about the burial site of George Ellsworth, John Hunt Morgan's "Lightning"? I was astonished to discover he had a wife and daughter. We have some letters in our family archives from him dated June 1899. He had just returned from the Spanish American War in Cuba where he drove a 2 mule Red Cross wagon. He carefully says he did not "don the Blue". Never mentioned LA or family. This is just 18 months before he died. He was a traveling book salesman.
Thanks Patricia

Unfortunately, I can not answer your questions. I do have a book, Chronicles of West Baton Rouge , that gives detailed accounts of the acquisitions of Devall plantation, Orange Grove Plantation and Camp plantation. All of which were owned by descendants of Richard Devall. Please email me at debmartin68 at aol dot com if you would like a copy of this info. By chance, are you also tied in with Alma Plantation?

I am so in hopes someone can help me find the Cemetery and directions to its location, where Bill Evans,Jazz Icon, is buried. He was born William John Evans 16 August 1929 in Plainfield,NJ, and died in New York 15 Sept. 1980, but my son tells me he was buried in Baton Rouge,LA.
My son has been a fan of Bill Evans since he was in high school. He even named a son after him. This same son and his sweet family are presently traveling to Florida from Texas for a vacation, and plan to return through New Orleans/Baton Rouge area. He wants to find Bill Evans grave so they can take pictures of his son, named Evans, at the gravesite of his namesake. I am hoping someone will see this and know where Bill Evans is buried, or knows how to find out. They will be returning to Texas in about 8 days. So I look forward to any kind response before then. Thanks Sherry in Texas

Many, many people in WBR Parish, LA are related in one way or the other. I'll pull out my genealogy info. and see if Jules Templet is in our particular family line. I know also that the Templet's from St. Delphine and Port Allen, LA married into the Hebert family in WBR parish (which has a huge lineage). Good luck.

Researching Degruy/De Gruy & Allied Families

Greetings,

I administer the Degruy@Rootsweb list. We've been thinking that perhaps if we submit a list of some of the families allied to our Degruys, we might find researchers "out there" who might be interested in sharing research on some of these names. So below you will find a list of some of our related names. We are limiting this to our Louisiana [and maybe a couple of Mobile] names. We're not listing the European connections.

If anyone wants to respond, here are some options: you could join the Degruy list and submit your contributions and queries to the list. That would make sense if you have a lot of interconnections. If not, you could respond to me at the following address and I will then submit your email to the Degruy list and ask anyone relevant to your research to contact you. If you do this please use this email:

listadministratordegruyl@earthlink.net

This is an "experiment." We'll just have to take it step by step and see how it goes.

Thanks for any participation.

Renee

Here are some of our names:

Arroyo Aufrere Autin Babin Bachemin Badou Bailly Basse Baudean Baudier Bayard Beebe Bel Belsome Berard Bienvenu Bobe Bodin Boisblanc Bonneval Bourgeois Bourgogne Boutte Bouvier Brandon Breaux Bretton Brown Dorgenois Broussard Brown Cabiro Carel Caricabere Cassard Casterade Cavaroc Cazenavette Celestin Champagne Chapron Charbonnet Chauvin Chevalier Coignard Cooper Couturier Cressy Cunningham Daiz Dauterive Decuir De Gruy Degruy Degruise DeLaCroix Delery Delpit Delvaille DeMonberault DePigny Derbes Descloseaux Desmare Dias Dufouchard Duplantier Dupont dit le Kintrek Durel Durand Edy Falgout Faust Fazende Ferrandou Forno Forstall Fortier Foucher Gaiennie Ganucheau Garic Gaudet Giguel Glapion Gonsoulin Gubler Guidroz Guerin Guidry Guillemot dit La Lande Harang Hepp Herzog Heyl Hoerner Hotard Huxelle Jacquet Judice Junqua Lacour LaCourse Laissard/Layssard Lalande LaLoire LeBlanc Lemelle LeMothe Livaudais Marmillion Matherne Maupas Mazerat McAdams Melancon Melbourne Merrill Mestayer Michelet Monbereau Mossy Nicaud Noques Nunes Oden Olivier Patin Patout Pendleton Perrin Perrin-Jacquet Pery Picou Planchard Poujol Price Pruet Ray Rigaud Rigob Rivet/Rivette Robichaux Ruth Saint Preux Saulet Sauton Theriot Toups St. Amand St. Pe/ St. Pre/ St. Preux Salomon Sauton Schneidau Seghers Shaw Seuzeneau Tabony Trosclair Verloin Villeneuve Villarubia Villere Wrigley Zamora Zeringue

PS: Our progenitor also had the names Dumenil/ DuMesnil, Valentin, Fouchard, de la Folie [some of these may have been European family names or titles, so I don't know if there's any point in including these at this point.
Early parish names, boundaries

I am a descendant of Jedediah SMITH, who brought his family to Natchez in 1776; his nieces were Edith SMITH BUHLER DEVALL and Eunice SMITH LILLY (now spelled LILLEY), all who resided in Baton Rouge. I was aware that Edith and her second husband Richard DEVALL purchased land in West Baton Rouge, but generally I have placed family member in The Plains area, a fact supported by Jennings' The Plains and the People, with LILLY at Springfield Plantation/Landing. Various early records refer to him as syndic of Springfield during Spanish rule and owner of The Plains store during the West Florida Rebellion.

However, recent research on a different family (WIKOFF-WATTS) sent me on a search for Stephen WATTS' plantation Belmont in Baton Rouge. A map search shows Belmont in West Baton Rouge Parish. And, there, close by in the same parish are Springfield and Devalls. I went looking for early parish info for an explanation and found "Genealogical Information for the State of Louisiana," www.mylouisianagenealogy.com. Under West Baton Rouge Parish History, I read that "Baton Rouge Parish was created in 1792 in the West Floridas arera. The land was divided into E. & W. Baton Rouge Parishes in 1810." However, the Parish Formation Maps at the site show something a little different--12 counties established by Orleans Territory in 1805 when the U.S. began governing all but the Florida parishes. The map shows Pointe Coupee and Iberville Counties--no Baton Rouge. The 1807 map shows the division into 19 parishes, including Baton Rouge on the west bank of the Mississippi. The 1812 map adds the Florida parishes and gives the names East and West Baton Rouge parishes.

Question 1: Is the parish information above basically accurate?
Question 2: Is there any standard for evaluating early references to "Baton Rouge," for example, whether the location is on the east or west bank?
Question 3: In genealogy databases and other writing, should the writer/compiler state the name of the area at the time, followed by "presentday ---"? What is the standard for designating location where names and boundaries have changed?
Question 4: If Baton Rouge Parish was created in West Florida in 1792, what was the area known as when governed by the English, then the Spanish before 1792?
Question 5: Can anyone help me with Springfield and the location of Thomas LILLY's property?

Thanks to anyone who can help with this.

E.
The book that I have doesn't necessarily list the names of everyone buried in Brusly; only those Catholics buried at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church cemetary. Unfortunately, there isn't a William Eckles listed. Sorry!

You might want to try the Catholic Diocese office in Baton Rouge; they should have records of people buried at other locations in surrounding areas. Good luck!

The book that I have, "St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Cemetary" lists all of the graves of those buried in the cemetary. It also contains each grave, and the birth and death dates. It was published in 1990, but doesn't include the newer graves of those in the mausoleum.

I checked the index for "Morris" but there are none listed. Only one "Morrison". Sorry!

Just found this board. Don't know if anyone has replied to your query.

If he was dead near Brusly, he may have been buried in the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church cemetary in Brusly. Unfortunately, the original cemetary for this church was consumed by the river around 1860. His grave could have been among those consumed. I have a book listing all of the graves in the present-day cemetary, and can find no mention of John Dosher.

Hi. I don't know if this is related- but it may be. My great grandmother's name was Donna-Maria Giordano and she was married to Guiseppe Ventola. Maria was from the villiage of Campofiorito in Sicily. I believe she had a sister named Lena(or Antiolena) who was married to a Manda and lived close to New Roads in either Livonia or Torbert. Let me know if any of this might relate to your family. :)

I have been looking for my great grandfather, Francesco (Frank) Giordano for almost 4 years. The last known address was a PO box in New Roads in 1904. He fell off the face of the earth.
He came through Ellis Island on the Bolivia in 1893. Have no information on him until 1904 and nothing after that year. Since he left his family in Sicily and was in the U.S. eleven years and did not send for his family, my grandfather, his son, came to New Roads looking for him in 1904. I know they met but what happened after that, I don't have an idea.
I think he has a new family somewhere in the New Roads, Fordech area. If anyone one knows of Giordanos in that area, I would like them to get in touch with me at this email address.

Sorry, I am at a dead end with my side of the Cianchetta's. All I have is a relative living in the Boston area in 1920. Certain my grandfather's sister returned to Italy and never returned to the USA again. Couldn't even find a census record of the sister in Boston when they opened up the files for free (Ancestry.com). Like she dropped off the face of the earth. NO living family left to get any info, that is accurate info from.

It was by sheer luck I found my grandfather's sister because they listed her maiden name and the contact person here in the states which was my grandfather. In those days they put street addresses and it was a direct hit. Other than that, not a single find.

How's your search coming along?

Sandy

I am trying to locate any family that may have heard the story about Cristina (Scipione) and Pasquale Cianchetta.

I assume that the name was changed to Sennett and that Guiseppe Cianchetta is the same person as Joseph Sennett?Otherwise I don't see the connection to the name.

I have seen by the passenger records that they were visiting his sister-in-law Grazia Cianchetta in MA so I assume she was either widowed or they simply gave her name and not his brothers. I was hoping someone knew the names of the wives of a Cianchetta that I can relate it too.

I know they did not live in the US but in Italy. What I am trying to do is make that connectin with the sister-in-law who was here in 1910 because I have no other information on any Cianchetta's but that piece of information.

Sandy

Hi Sandy,

I have found some information regarding Joseph Sennett B:15/2/1897 -20/8/1988 SS:488017761 Born in Mehlville, St. Louis, Missouri. His father's name was Salvatore Cianchetta (Sam) 2nd Marriage to Rose. Their son was Giuseppe Cianchetta. Salvatore Date of Arrival 1/12/1920 on The Providence visiting his brother Raffaele Cianchetta in Chicago Illinois. There are more than one or it could be the same person. Salvatore also came before this period to visit on 28/2/1906 Prinzess Irene, it shows his 1st wife was Agata visiting his other brother Michele. So I think Joseph Sennett has a connection in Illinois.

I have found we have relatives in Chicago Heights & Crete, Illinois. There are a few Cianchetti is how they spell it, but I know it as Cianchetta with my mother's side of the family. Do you know if you are related to the people in Illinois? I am also trying to find out the Cianchette family in Maine if they are also related because some decendants have similar names to the ones I am researching. Do you know of the Cianchette family in Maine?

Is it possible that the name Pascqua could be incomplete and the name is Pasquale? My grandfather's sister (Cristina Scipione) was married to a Pasquale Cianchetta. They both were from Sulmona. Her family came to America and remained here after 1901. It's unclear if she came with them and married or married in Sulmona and only visited. She came to visit in 1911 and 1916 and again in 1920 with her two daughters Linda and Mary. They were only two and 9 months old in 1920. She was visiting her sister-in-law Grazia Cianchetta in Lynn, MA. Originally a cousin showed her last name as Diorio but I found a passenger's list showing her maiden name (Scipione) and then her family (Cianchetta) under her name. They were going to my grandfather's house (Vito Scipione) in Lynn, MA. I haven't the foggiest notion where my cousin came up with the other name, but it thru me off for some time.

Wondering if anyone has detailed knowledge of the 1860 to 1870 household of Capt/Col Henri Mortimer Favrot?
I am researching my ancestor Maggie Harper that was supposed to have lived with the Favrot's for quite some time. She is said to have left the household around the time the Favrot daughters were presented in New Orleans. This story does not make sense based on the dates of birth for daughters Corrine and Louise Favrot, 1878 and 1880. I see an earlier daughter Marie J. Samson, born 1854 listed on some Favrot family trees. Were there in fact earlier children from a prior marriage?
thanks for suggestions

Hi Brenda,

The only additional information I can provide on your Armand Hébert comes from his baptism record abstract included in the Diocese of Baton Rouge books, Volume 18, page 297. According to this abstract, Armand was born 10 Mar 1889 and baptized 15 Apr 1889 at St John the Baptist Church in Brusly. Parents are Joseph Hébert and Amanda Babin and his sponsors were Louis Leroy and Orelia Babin.

Earlier volumes in this series of books will likely have more data on his ancestry but his marriage is too recent to be included in these volumes which currently end with the year 1894.

Dwayne Montz
http://my.ohio.voyager.net/~damontz/

HI Please email me at Camions@att.net. I can send you some info on the POPE family from WBR from a book I bought in 1979 called the CHRONICLES OF WEST BATON ROUGE.. NO It is NOT the book you are asking about but another. I have info on Nathaniel W. POPE who married Martha Johnson. They had seven children and a plantation in WBR contaning 1,026 arpents. This Nathaniel W. POPE
died in 1855. I DO know of the attorney POPE, his signature is on some of the documents concerning my ancestors from WBR. These documents came from the WBR Courthouse.
Do you know CW POPE'S Wife Margeret's maiden name?

Does anyone have a copy of this book published in the 70's? I remember my mother telling me many years ago that that one of the last people in the book before it was published was our Pope great (maybe great great) grandmother.

I'm looking for a connection to C. W. Pope b.1837 (an attorney in Baton Rouge) and his wife, Margaret b 1856.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
