Briggs Family.

I wanted to let everyone know that Briggs United Methodist Church will be celebrating 125 years on May 19th at 3PM. I was just a child when we celebrated 100 and didn't quite realize the impact this church has had on our community and family. Now that I've researched my roots I am as proud as ever to say that Briggs UMC is our church, built by our ancestors.

I've always been told anyone with the Drounette, Drounett, Dronet, Dronett, or any other dirivative is related somehow.
I have a family tree going back to Antionne Drounette, who came from Noir Mountier, France back around 1814. It's quite interesting. Would love to learn more about our family.

I often wondered what happened to Mome's sisters, now I have finally located the one she use to talk to me about when I was about 9 years old. She called her Phemie, she had a picture of herself and I think Phemie, that hung up on her wall in Voth, Texas, right pass Parkdale Mall in Beaumont, Texas. My mother told me about a lady she went to Charlton Pollard with Name Moss, that use to visit her grandmother Emma Prejean Petry. Yes I found them also in the census, vermillion parish. I don't think he was a Prejean, I think he was a Trahan, Mother's name was Clemence Trahan, and father's name was Joseph Lessin Trahan. He died in the confederate war. He had a friend that went to war with him, went back home and married Clemence Trahan,Emma Prejean Petry, showed me pictures of her father and mother and brother Demas Prejean.I found him in the house with his mother and Olidon Prejean(his father's friend that WENT to war with him. Another sister name was Elvira Prejean. DID YOUR GRANDMOTHER HAVE BLUE EYES LIKE EMMA?HIS MOTHER WAS A TRAHAN BEFORE SHE MARRIED HIS FATHER ITH THE TRAHAN NAME. (I THINK THEY WERE COUSINS)

There are some Briggs here in Beaumont, Texas, that may be offspring of Julia Briggs sister Emily. Joseph Reaux was Corinne Reaux father, he was white, her mother was black. It is written by one of Erastus grandson's, that Julia was brought by Louis Petry by boat to Louisiana from Virginia. I don't know if that's true. Emma Prejean's father's name was Demas Prejean. It was found in the Louisian census.

A few days ago, a Johnny Driesen from Belgium posted a reply to one of my posts. He gave the information that Emile Lepine was born in Paris and was the son of Jules Lepine [bn Paris] and Rosalie Band. He is listed on that Antwerp Police immigration document that I wrote about earlier [year of 1870]. Johnny will search the "Antwerp population" [I suppose that is a census]. The charge would be 15 euros. If you are interested, I can give you his e-mail address.

I will look in the Paris records to see what I can find.

Cheryl

My grandfather's name was Jean Paul LaBelle. He died in 1952. He gave very little information about his family, except to say he was estranged from them. He did memtion a sister named Marguarite (sp?) and a brother named William Johnson, who came to see him (found him?) in Danville, Virginia. They spoke on a street corner for only a moment and parted.

He was an artist. He worked with oils and was very talented. He also did wing walking on airplanes. He spoke other languages and was highly educated. He named his youngest boy William Johnson LaBelle after his brother. He named his youngest daughter Phoebe Omlie LaBelle for the female pilot by the same name.

To this day, we know nothing more about him.
Susan Williams (email: williamssusan20@yahoo.com)

I am seeking any information on this african american Douglas family that lived in Vermilion parish during the late 1800s and early 1900s or later. If you know of this family or anyone that was married into this family, or is a relative. Or any Douglas family members originally from Abbeville, Louisiana, and are residing there, or known other cities, towns, etc. There was a boy of interest named Joseph Douglas, who was three years old in 1920. His mother's name was Beula! Please email me at grownfolkbiz2@aol.com

Hi,

I found Victor Lepine's death record transcribed on the Internet on the FamilySearch.org website. His parents are listed as Emile Lepine and Josephine Denuit [which you already know]. His place of birth is given as La Louviere, Belgium. I checked it out and found that La Louviere is 4 miles from Familleureux, Belgium. That's good news! It is likely that Alexandre was born there, too. I also found Emile Lepine listed [file #28189] on the Antwerp, Belgium Police Immigration Index 1840-1930. I don't know how you would go about getting that file.

Cheryl

Hi,

I was just thinking that no matter which church Emile belonged to or was buried from, he had to have gone through a funeral home. The funeral home record would list the cemetery where he was buried. I found that the records from some of the funeral homes in Acadia Parish have been published. The Acadia Parish Library has copies of the books. I don't know what dates are covered, but it might be worth e-mailing the library to find out if Emile is listed in any of the books.

The Gossen Funeral Home is in Rayne and the Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home is in Crowley.

Cheryl

Hi,

I presume that you live in Arkansas. Is that correct? I would suggest that you first try getting a copy of Emile's death record [at the LA State Archives] which will show where he died. In 1920, he was in Crowley, but he could have been elsewhere in 1925 when he died. If you don't get any leads from the death certificate, you could contact St. Michael The Archangel Church in Crowley and St. Joseph Church in Rayne. I know that you believe that he was no longer Catholic, but you never know. You may also want to get a copy of his succession. It may mention something about his wife.

I found mention of the marriage of Alexandre and Gustavine in the "Crowley Signal", it appears to be the 1/28/1899 issue. "Marriage at the bride's father in Prairie Hayes at eleven o'clock A.M. Wednesday, Alexandre Lepine of Vermilion Parish and Miss Gustavine Garot of Acadia."

In the Acadia Parish Marriage License list for 1889, I found the following:
J. F. Gerard - groom
Catherine Garrot [sic] - bride
2/2/1889 - date
Savinian Cart - Justice of the Peace
Leon Garot - Security
Delphe Garot, Victor Garot, Leon Garot - Witnesses

Are you familiar with the book, "Daddy's Money: A Memoir of Farm and Family" by Jo McDougall & Hilary Masters? In this book Leon Joseph Garot is mentioned as the son of Belgian immigrants. I believe it was published in Arkansas. If I remember correctly, Joe Garot, Leon's son, was living in Arkansas, the same town as the Lepine family.

It is unfortunate that the French language was not preserved.

Cheryl

Yes, my husbands father is the first generation that does not... my husbands grandparents were the first generation that were really totally fluent in English, but they spoke french at home & learned english in the US school system.
My father-in-law said that a distant cousin gave him the name of what would have been his great grandmother... on the 1900 census, Emile was listed as a widow. The family did enter the port at New Orleans & I'm not sure how long till they entered the Rayne area. Mother & father & the 3 kids were on the ship manifest. I'm assumng there is no burial record of Emile ... I have searched & searched, but I wouldn't know what church to start with ... I was actually surprised Charlotte & Victor were at the catholic cemetery, I actually thought Emile left the Catholic church & joined another Christian/ protestant religion & thats why he was outcast..

Hi,

Did you see Anna Hayes' post about Emile's succession record? I looked at the Acadia Parish index and found that it was opened on 1/24/1926 less than a month after his death. It is succession #1527. While I was at it, I looked for a succession for Leon Garot and found it. It was opened on 12/10/1912, #881. These documents should provide you with good information. You might learn something about Emile's wife on his succession document.

I checked google maps and found that Familleureux, Belgium is about 16 miles from Glabais, Belgium. Both are located south of Brussels...Glabais is closer at 23 miles.

Cheryl

Hi,

It is great that you found the passenger list. What were the names listed? Were there the parents and three children? Also, if you have not found a death or burial record for the mother, how do you come up with 1851-1899 as well as the surname of Denuit? I found a Josephine Denuit on the Mormon site. She was born 6-12-1849 in Glabais, Brabant, Belgium. Her parents were Dominique Joseph Denuit [3-25-1813, Glabais] and Marie Therese Decamp [1-14-1811, Glabais]. If Alexandre's mother was Josephine Denuit, then this person is likely her. Her six siblings are listed also.

You mentioned not finding a death record for Josephine. Deaths in LA were not officially recorded until about 1911 [I think]. So, the only record would be a burial record. Did you consider that the family lived elsewhere before going to Rayne. Did they come to the port of New Orleans? If so, she may have died in the city before the family made its way out to other parts. I didn't find her in the NO records, but it may be that she died there but it was not reported.

I found Charlotte's tombstone at "Find A Grave" as well as that of Victor. Now that you know that Emile died in 1925, will you be able to check the burial records at the church? That is an interesting story about him being buried at night!

This is interesting research!

Do the Lepine's speak French?

Cheryl

Thank you... the 1890 census for louisiana apparently burned in a fire... I believe Alexander's mother to be Josephine Denuit (1851 -1899), immigrated to Louisiana with the family (found the ship manifest) but she died before the 1900 census ... I haven't been able to find any info on her at all ... I guess she was from Belgium too but I haven't been successful... maybe the last name is mispelled?? what's really strange is that I can't find her death record or burial site.. I found their daughter Charlott in a family Crypt in Rayne Louisiana.. no death/burial information on the father Emile either.. but according to famly stories, Emile was outcast from the church & had to buried at night.. I think he left the catholic church or something like that. In Charlotte's crypt, there apears to be an unmarked tomb on top, which makes sense except for where is his wife Josephine?? very puzzling... thanks for your help .. I added the tomb pics to Charlotte if you are interested.
Hi,

I just made an amazing discovery! I went to the rootsweb site and typed in Emile Lepine. I found Emile Joseph Lepine born 9/11/1850. That is the correct year of birth and I feel sure that this is the correct person. He has three siblings, Victor [bn 1839], Charlotte [bn 1843] and Jean Baptiste Augustin. I feel sure that the Emile who came to LA named his kids after his deceased siblings. Jean Baptiste died in Belgium after Emile died here in 1925.

This Emile Joseph Lepine was born at Familleureux, Hainaut, Wallonnie, Belgium. His parents are Augustin Joseph Lepine and Victoire Linard. There is more info on them and a few more generations on the Linard line.

Go to the site and check it out! There is an e-mail address for the submitter and I'm pretty sure that he is in Belgium!

Hope you find your husband's relatives in Belgium!

Happy hunting!

Cheryl

Hi,

I found Alexandre Lepine on the 1910 and 1920 census records in Arkansas. The daughter Mart was born ca 1904 in LA and Nellie was born ca 1909 in Arkansas. The family would have moved to Arkansas after 1904 and before 1909. It is strange that I don't find a 1900 census for the family. I would think that Victor and Charlotte were the siblings of Alexandre and therefore, Emile Lepine [bn ca 1850 in Belgium] would have been his father. The two census records that I found in Arkansas both have Belgium as Alexandre's birth country. Did you find a death record for Alexandre in Arkansas? Perhaps you may want to get copies of the death certificates for Victor and Emile Lepine. A town of birth in Belgium may be noted.

Victor Lepine died 8/28/1949 @76 [Acadia Parish vol. 10, page 391].
Emile Lepine died 12/30/1925 @75 [Acadia Parish vol. 36, page 15176].
These documents may be obtained at the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge for $5.00 each.

On the 1920 census, Emile Lepine is shown as entering the country in 1886.

Leon Garot, Therese Garot and their daughter, Malina, are shown as having entered the country in 1884. The son, Joseph, appears to have come the following year.

I hope this helps with your research.

Cheryl

(b. 1824); his great grandson Henry Clay (b. 1843); g2 grandson William Owen; g3 William Clayton.

I am seeking more reliable information as well. Have you found any source documents?
