Carolyn,

If you would go to the indigent soldiers Sevier Co:
http://www.genealogyshoppe.com/arsevier/86322.jpg
and enlarge the pg, then read the third entry from the bottom. It states:
Feb 1863
John Shelton/Sevier Co/?teamster or minister (I assume) 1st TX Legion/in service/family: Caroline 19(wife), Melissa 3(child) and Ann 1(child).

I have also seen her death cert where it states George was father, but I believe this record taken while they were all still alive is prob correct. I did not find a George Shelton in the 1st TX Legion, but did find a John. Here is what I have found on him:
John A Shelton
service record states:
ARMY CONFEDERATE STATES
GENERAL HOSPITAL
Enterprise MS
Nov 20 1862
b Jackson MS age 20
6'1'' light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair
dysentry, chronic bronchitis,extremely emaciated
certificate of disability
sick from May 1862 to discharge in Nov

Died in Little Rock of smallpox, supposedly never being inducted into the Army, according to Mazie Cannon(who was Melissa Shelton's granddtr). But, if this was true, how was he on the indigent soldiers list as still in service. There were those around him who are listed as dead.

What I find is John A Shelton in(started out in Co I) Co N 1st TX Legion(aka Whitfields Legion TX Cav & 27th Regiment TX Cav) enlisted in Daingerfield TX. There is also an Isaac B who started out in Co I and ended up in Co N also enlisted in Daingerfield. He was a POW but looks like he got a parole. There was an Ervin Shelton in Co G, enlisted in Paris TX, died Aug 9 1862 near Saltillo MS. Both Isaac and John A Shelton enlisted Mar 10 1862. Erwin Shelton was Mar 1 1862.

I am not 100% certain this John Shelton is the same as the one in Sevier Co. The men from Sevier Co that were in the 1st TX Legion all enlisted in Co K and they did that in Polk Co AR. Also, the Isaac above and a brother John lived in Daingerfield TX 1860. But on the 1860 census, this John states b AL, not MS. There are no records on any other Sheltons other than Ervin, Isaac & John.

Caroline Mears Shelton married Lorenzo Belt Dec 10 1863 in Sevier Co. He was stepfather to her two dtrs. Caroline and Lorenzo had James William and Elizabeth Safrona Belt. She married Robert Bartlett Pearce, Jr(RB Pearce Sr was my 3ggrandfather). They are buried in the Marvin Cem but I don't know where Safrona Belt is buried. The James Mears 1802 is the father of Caroline and her siblings.

James Jefferson Trammell was son to Thomas Trammell and Acenith Wright. Her father (Barzilla) and my 4ggrandfather were brothers.

Hope this has helped some and not confused things. I am using footnote.com for the CW records and they do not have AR online yet to thoroughly research for this John Shelton in Sevier Co Indigent Soldiers list.
