Hi. I am another Bateman descendant. Ted and I and others have been communicating for a while. I grew up in MC. My great grandmother was Ara Bateman Zenor - born on Bateman Island 1869. She married Oscar Zenor and they lived in Patterson. Her daughter, Cedes Thompson, was my grandmother.
I would so much enjoy any stories or information you have time to tell regarding Bateman Island. And if the boxes you found in the archives are relative to the island and the family, I may just have to make a trip to LA. I'm missing it anyway!
Leah

GREAT NEWS EVERYONE,
I found a ton of information and pictures at the Morgan City Archives. I leave to go back offshore in two days, ill be back in 2 weeks. When I get back I am going spend a few days there and finger thru the 26 boxes of information.
It was really crazy, the first folder they brought to me had pictures of my Great Grand Father & Grand Mother in it. I also found out that my great uncle George Williams, actually was the founder of the MC Bank here in town.

I am not very familiar the Berwick's land in and near the present day town of Berwick. I do know the location of all Joseph's grants and purchases before 1830, but did not follow in that area after that. Know much more about the Berwick lands near Centerville and south of there on Bayou Salle. The town of Berwick office may have maps and/or abstracts that show each annexation into the city limits. Otherwise, an historical abstract of the property you are interested in would have to be done. Good luck!
M.Luke, Franklin, LA

I work for the La. State Land Office, and am trying to locate a piece of property that was, I believe, a portion of the Berwick Plantation owned by Joseph W. Berwick, father of Nathan, and grandfather of Beverly Rochelle Berwick, Horace Mixer Berwick, and Florilla Berwick White. I have conveyance documents from Luke Bryan(t) to Joseph Berwick, but the description is vague, and a conveyance document from Nathan Berwick to his children, which describes the property as being part of the residue of the Berwick Plantation, but nothing to tell me exactly where Berwick Plantation was. Would you happen to have a map or complete description with boundaries, etc. that would help me locate the Berwick Plantation? I am looking specifically for the area that became Dewitt Clinton Roberts' Addition to Berwick.

Re: Tarleton family in St Mary's Parish

Leo Tarlton (b. August 5, 1794, Scott County, Kentucky, d. 1866, Louisiana) and Gabriella Augusta Hawkins (b. January 25, 1810, Bourbon County, Kentucky, d. after 1899, Alto Pass, Illinois), were originally from Lexington, Kentucky. These are my 2nd great-grandparents.

Gabriella's first husband was George Steptoe Washington, the great-nephew of the President (President Washington had no children), whom she married on May 2, 1827 at her parents home called “Mount Lebanon” near Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky. She was 17 years old when she married. She is described in the Cognets book, above page 77, as “a most beautiful and attractive woman.” She lived at “Belle Vue,” near Charleston, Virginia, until Mr. Washington died in 1831, only four years after their marriage. An internet correspondent tells me that Mr. Washington had a brother who was a doctor and caught cholera from the workers on a canal. George Steptoe contracted the disease and he and his brother died within one day of each other. After his death, Gabriella moved back to Kentucky.

Gabriella married Leo Tarlton on October 18, 1842 in Lexington, Kentucky. The Cognets book, above page 77, says that prior to the Civil War, “Col. Tarlton was an extensive sugar planter in St. Mary’s Parish, Louisiana, and also had large cotton plantations in Madison Parish, on the Mississippi River.” Other sources say that the plantation in St. Mary Parish was called “Shadyside.” I do not know the circumstances under which they came to Louisiana. However, in the 1830s and 1840s Louisiana was considered one of the richest southern states, and many immigrants came from Virginia, Kentucky and elsewhere to seek their fortunes, some bringing slaves with them. Leo and Gabriella were apparently among them. I have been able to confirm some, but not all, of the above. The 1840 census shows Leo living in Scott, Kentucky and owning 34 slaves. The 1850 census shows Leo, age 60 (approx. match), living in Madison Parish with Augustus, age 38 (presumably Gabriella Augusta, who was 40 in 1850), Elizabeth, age 6 (age matches), and several other children including another Leo, age 3. It shows Leo as owning 41 slaves. He is listed among the wealthiest planters in Madison Parish in 1850 on the Madison Parish website: his land was valued at $50,000 (copy in file). I have copied from the Madison Parish website a portion of La Tourrette’s 1853 map of Louisiana that shows Leo’s land. This confirms that Leo, Gabriella and Lizzie were living on a rather large plantation in Madison Parish in 1850. At that time, Gabriella may have lived the life of a Southern belle. Subsequent history is confusing. The 1860 census shows Leo living in St. Mary Parish (Berwick) with Elizabeth (age 16 – matches) but it shows Leo as age 50 and born about 1810 – does not match. It also shows a lot of household members that do not match the 1850 census, but no Gabriella or Augusta is shown. It appears that Leo moved to St. Mary Parish between 1850 and 1860 (perhaps selling his Madison Parish plantation). It makes me wonder if Leo and Gabriella divorced during that time. In any event, both Leo and Elizabeth are shown as living in Berwick (St. Mary Parish) in 1860. Leo died in 1866. Gabriella lived to about 90 and died in Illinois. I have Googled “Shadyside Plantation Louisiana” and confirmed that such a plantation did exist at one time in St. Mary parish, but I have found little information about it.

I would enjoy having any more information about Leo Tarlton or his wife Gabriella Hawkins.

I have no idea where any graves are on the Bateman. I will ask around and see if I can find out anything. We do still own 486 acres of land on the Bateman. We never leased any land to the oil company but they did drill 2 gas wells but they not producing to much now. Thanks for getting back to me. I'll keep you informed with any news I can get about the graves.

Robert i understand that the william's family owned and lived
on the Island for year's. Then it was leased to the oil company. Is this correct? The bateman's have not owned or lived on the Island for year's.It is my understanding that a lot of family's were born and raised there. A lot of slave family's lived on the Island before the civil war. A lot of grave's were on Bateman's Island. I cannot locate the burial site and/or site's of any of them. What happened to them? I have a paper clipping of the death of one Elihu E. Robinson D:1944 morgan, city. buried Bayou Bouf Bateman's Island. Do you have any idea?

Where would you want to start? Several generation's of Bateman's were born and raised on this island. And several other family's were also. Lot's of history to much to list here. Suffice to say that it started with John Mills Bateman
patriot veteran of the battle of New Orleans along with both his brother's Carlton and Noah. They went back north after and John settled on the Island. They ran grist mills on ell river. John raised sugar cane la. This is the basic's.

Does anyone have any info on the Barone family residing in St. Mary Parish in the late 1890's? They came from Contessa Entellina, Sicily and lived on a farm in St. Mary Parish before moving and settling in New Orleans. I have not been able to find any info, and cannot find a Barone listed in the 1900 census for St. Mary Parish. I was told that they lived on someone's farm, but I do not know the name of the family they lived with.

Thanks for the help!
Mary

Thanks again.
So from these sources it appears that Martha was born in 1844 and her sister Emily in 1854. Since my great grandmother was not born until 1871 it seems curious that she would refer to a deceased child as her Aunt. Maybe not. It is always so interesting.

I don't see how they fit in as I was looking for a possible relation between them and the Garrett family. I am guessing that the term "Aunt" may be one of affection rather than relation.
Thank you for the information. This has led me to find that Jotham Bedelll built what was later called the Alice C. Plantation (named by a subsequent owner) located on Hwy 182 near Garden City. This was his residence from 1846 until his death in 1859.
I am actually trying to trace two of his daughters Martha Jane and Emily who were Aunts of my great grandmother, Margaret Garrett Oakes. I found that Martha (1844-1929) married Capt. William Richardson Collins in 1866. Emily (Emilie )I know nothing about and therefore she might be a link.
I dunno. I think these stories are fun, but it occurs to me that if I had a lot of gold to hide, the last place I would pick is in the marshy, flood prone, erosion prone mud of south Louisiana. Not to mention all the people passing nearby all these generations.

Leah i'm watching for any and all replies. So far none.
I hope someone will share some history. I though maybe
someone would like to tell about how they lived on the island.
Or maybe some pictures to share. Or maybe tell about that lost or found gold coin treasure buried during the civil war? Oh well maybe some day when the south rises again.Yeah right. Maybe the oil company found it? Maybe grand pappy just wanted pay back.Digging holes all over the island? I heard it was a big steel chest chained to a big cypress tree next to the island. My mother told us that story when we were kids.
This is the picture of my mama, Helen Mire Templet, and her students at the Bayou Lourse school. This would have been sometime between 1950-1952.
