My gg grandfather was Victor Ruiz of St. Bernard. He was an alligator hunter. He was known by the Melerines of St. B. and probably the Nunez family. His daughter or granddaughter was Lucy Ruiz and she married Edward Hammell of New Orleans. When she was little, they lived close to the Miss River on St. Bernard hwy. South of Pacheham Oaks.

I hope your query is still open and active.

My gggrandmother was Marie Clemance Fremin (1832-?) who married my gggranfather, Jean Marie Saubert(Sobert)(1830-?)in 1867 in Labadieville, Assumption Parish. I grew up in Labadieville, though I have been away for many years.

I will be glad to share my tree with you, since I have a lot of the Fremin line shown. Marie Armelise Fremin, born in Thibodaux in 1821, is my 1st cousin 3X removed. She did marry Alexandre Bourgeois in 1846 and had two daughters with him. She also marriedMiguel(Michel)Antonio Perez
(1806-1861)and they had eight children. There is another marriage that shows up (for which I can find no documentation)to Norcisse Auguste Mayet in 1848, no children.

Miguel's parents, Vincente Perez (1770-?) and Maria Ignes Estival Diaz, are from the Canary Islands. I could not identify them on any of the eight ship lists from 1778-1783. They would have been children, possibly using first names only, unrecognizable or hidden within a family group. They may show up later from another source. A large group of my family line came from the Canary Islands - Martinez, Plasencia (Plasenzia, Plaisance), Aleman, Hernandez(s), Ximenez, etc.

Please send me your email and I will send an invitation for you to view my tree (constantly under revision, cleanup, and updating). as a guest.

Best regards,

Paul R.

Are you referring to Francisca Ximenes, spouse of Francisco Serpas? I have vol. 3-19 of the NOLA Archdiocese church records. I might be able to help if you share with me what you know of her parents, siblings, etc. Sometimes the clues lie with siblings, because she may have had a child born in years when priests did not record grandparents, but her siblings may have. When our Isleño ancestors came over, it was at a time when the priests also tried to record places of origin, so they could differentiate families and individuals, but once some parish priests knew parishioners better, they sometimes skipped over adding those details. Again, that's where siblings/collateral family members again can come in handy. :)

I have Ximenez lineage, too, but I don't know if it's the same line. I have Felipa Ximenez, from Agüimes, Gran Canaria.

Hope to hear more from you re: your Francisca!
Jenny

P.S. It's usually spelled Ximenez, Jimenez, or Gimenez. That odd variations come from priests spelling surnames phonetically, which occurred worldwide in those days. Spellings just weren't standardized, and especially not in places like NOLA, where priests might be native Spanish speakers for awhile then native French-speakers. Fun for us! ;)

Hmmm...

As for a marriage before 1846 in this area, you need to find someone with access to a library that has "Sacramental Records of the Roman Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of
New Orleans, Volumes 1 - 18 (1718 - 1829)".

If one can find an ancestor's name or variation of that name then you'd be able to contact the Archdiocese of New Orleans for a sacramental record. Which may or may not include parental information.

If in fact Francis is from the St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana area, she would have most probably been married in St. Bernard Catholic Church.

http://stbernardcatholicchurch.com//index.php?option=com_con...

http://www.archdiocese-no.org/archives/genealogy.php
Francis Hernandez, wife of John Neely St. Bernard Islenos or Pensacola?

Francis Hernandez (b. ABT 1823- d. AFT 1880) a free woman of color, was my great great great grandmother. She married John Neely some time before 1846. I do not know where, but I have found no record in Mobile, County.
She is only found on the 1850 and 1880 census in Mobile, Alabama. Although her husband and mulatto children are found on 1860 and 1870 as well, one year with a woman named Mintte (maybe Manette Journey and in 1870 it is difficult to read but it looks like Loora, I don't know) the 1880 census says that she was born in Alabama and her father was from Italy, but I don't think that is accurate. I might be wrong, but I do not associate the name Hernandez with Italian surnames.
John Neely was from Cincinnati reportedly of Scottish/Yorkshire ancestry. This Neely family in Mobile were all butchers and livestock dealers who mostly married into the LaFargue family as well as Chastang and Pons families.
Her son Jefferson Davis Neely, expanded the family livestock/ meat production business to Mehle street in Arabi sometime after 1900. Jefferson states that his mother was from Louisiana. His brother, George who went to Pensacola then to Washington state says that she is from Spain on one census and Jeff and George's sister, Lizzie have her as being from San Domingue on one census.
I lean mostly toward her being from Louisiana for several reasons 1) two of her children state the is where she is from on census data. 2) There is a huge population of Hernandez surnames in St. Bernard. 3) Jeff moved his business there , I believe very close to Hernandez Street. But. I also wonder about Pensacola because Lizzie Neely married a man named Henry Pons who is descended from some Hernandezes and because George took his business to Pensacola.
Any ideas on how to determine which way to go would be very appreciated.
Francis' children with John Neely were as follows:
Onelia
Catherine "Kate" ( married John Wesley Tanner)
Elizabeth Ann "Lizzie" ( Married Henry S. Pons)
Thomas C.
George
Jefferson Davis
Mollie ( married Joe Daffron and lived on Catina street in NOLA)
Robert Edward Lee

The Early Settlers book has some errors in it, primarily because she did not have access to the full text of the records. One such mistake is in the Alfonso/Alphonso line. The father, Diego, of Juan Alfonso, is not the same as the one who came from the Canaries. Through sacramental records that provide a baby's grandpts' names, it is clear his father, Diego, was married to Angela Cazorla, of Tirajana, Gran Canaria. Page 54 of Gilbert C. Din's book, _The Canary_Islanders_of_Louisiana_, mentions this Diego when discussing how some Spanish soldiers and sailors from other provinces of Spain, including Cuba, married the recently arrived Canary Islander girls and remained in Louisiana. (Spain had two fixed regiments in New Orleans, many of whom were enlisted through a draft in Spain, and were thus not colonists or settlers.) She does include many research "clues" and she herself advise people to order copies for verification of what she's gathered. Still not many do, and so there are tons of people our there who incorrectly include the Canary Islander, Diego Alfonso, as our ancestor.

I recommend using worldcat.org to find a library near you with a set of the bound Sacramental Records for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, which cover 1772-1831 of St. Bernard's records. Sit down with them, record siblings' names, whom they married, etc. And read the introductory material in the beginning. It will tell what years and what types of records (baptisms, marriages, interments, etc.) are included, and for which churches/parishes. It will also introduce you to the many ways names can appear. Sometimes as if transformed into French names (Santiague, Jacques, Jean, Pierre, Rodrigue, Molere, Alphonse), and other times as if Spanish (Santiago, Santiago, Juan, Pedro, Rodriguez, Molero, Alfonso).

Re: establishing deaths, for example, or finding the origins of an ancestor in the late 1700s and early 1800s, you can narrow down some death timeframes by examining their children's on-going sacramental records. You may not find an interment for "Juan Doe", but you may find a year where one of their children married or had a child, and the "Juan Doe" is named as the bride or groom's parent, or as one of the baby's grandparents. Then later you may encounter a similar situation, but now "Juan Doe" is is listed as "Juan Doe, dec." Dec.= Deceased. Just remember to also look for records about children, grandchildren, siblings, etc. Priests often included places of origin in many records, but they might have not have recorded locations for some records. Yet you might find locations in other relatives' records!

One last tip, the 1860 Census was taken in the French and Spanish manner, meaning a married woman was listed by her maiden name. That's a great bonus for researching!

:)
Jenny

Hi, there. They are available through the Archdiocese of New Orleans Archives: http://www.archdiocese-no.org/archives/genealogy.php

I visited St. Bernard Catholic Church in 2010, before going to take photos in the cemetery across the street, and I was told the burial book for the cemetery had been lost in Katrina. I have ordered some burial records since then, so it's possible *their* copy was lost, or perhaps just the more recent burials.

Which Gonzales line are you researching? I have a Gonzales line from there, and I do a lot of research for St. Bernard, Plaquemines, New Orleans, etc. Maybe I can help. :)

Jenny

Do you happen to have 1997 #20 & 21? I have searched for copies of any of the old publications for sale to add to my collection, but they are no where to be found. They have some info on the Oalmann family. I was considering going to the St Bernard society meeting on the 18th if it doesn't end up being the weekend my niece in Fl. has her baby. I live in Slidell. If you send me {pennyt153@yahoo.com} exactly what you are looking for, I will ask. Who knows, maybe one of your "cousins" will be there. I am also trying to figure out the Randazzo families in Violet in the early 1900's.

Penny

Thank you I have many of the older bulletins of L'Heritage, so I will look thru them.
I found a lot of information in Shirley Bourguard's "Early Settlers on the Delta"
many of the families you posted are probably listed there that was baptized in 1852. I believe this book is out of print, but can be found at other libraries in LA and personal collections. Thanks to the many volunteers a lot of the records were transcribed & saved before Katrina hit Louisiana.
Everyone needs to share their genealogy and especially documents that will help others find their family connection.

Hi, I'm a reporter with The Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans who ran across your comment stream. I'm working on a story about the Thompson family who started the pet cemetery that appears to rest on the former Toca Plantation. I am curious to speak with you about any information you have eabout the history of the property before Grace Thompson purchased it in 1935. My number is 504.352.2552 or my email is bbloch@timespicayune.com. Grace Thompson's daughter, Dorothy Thompson was murdered in 1985 on the property and just this week there was an arrest of a man who police believe killed her.

Anyhow, I'm trying to piece together a history of that parcel of land. Thanks! Ben

You can read a little about the murder I'm investigating here:
http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2012/04/suspect_arrested...
Hi Celina, good to hear from you.

I've uploaded most of my database to Ancestry.com so much of my connections are now available here. However, my notes don't transfer. I would have to make a "story" for each person. Let me know who you'd like more information on and I'll update the entry with my notes.

I've confirmed that we're both related back to Joseph Alonzo Toca, dob 1767 from Spain. Hi cuz'!

Also, I believe I've found the Toca "plantation". It looks like it's the house at 2206 Bayou Rd. in Toca, St.Bernard Parish, east of the Toca Gas Plant. It's pretty beat-up and looks to be behind the house at the front of the road. I found it using Google Maps and by using the directions to the old pet cemetery, which is the old Toca place.

http://s271.photobucket.com/albums/jj123/Wingoverstb/Pet%20C...

search for ancestors of Margaret Rodriguez Pampas Hunn - b. 27 Sep 1904, d. May 1985 in Arabi

Hello,

I'm searching for information on the names, locations, etc. of my maternal great-great grandparents who had a daughter (my great-grandmother) named Margaret Rodriguez Pampas Hunn - birth 27 Sep 1904 in Louisiana, and death May 1985 in Arabi, St Bernard, Louisiana. According to the 1930 US Census her mother's first name was Mary. However, I can't find any information on Margaret's father's names or on her mother's middle or maiden names.

My family says the spelling of the surname is definitely "Rodriguez;" however, I think could possible be "Rodrigues."

I know that part of the family spoke Portuguese (even at home after she and my grandfather married - date of marriage unknown), though there seems to be family debate over whether our ancestors are from Brazil or Portugal. (Brazil seems to be what most of the family members believe.)

Margaret's first marriage was to Andrew Pampas (my great-grandfather, d. Nov 1973 in Gretna, Jefferson, Louisiana, USA); and her second marriage was to Edward Paul Hunn (born in New Orleans and died in 1999, location unknown). She and Andrew had one son named Andrew Pampas, Jr. She and Edward had a child named Jocelyn ("Joyce") Margaret Hunn Galladoro.

The name shown on her SS Death Record is "Margaret Hunn."

I greatly appreciate any help you may be able to provide! I've searched and searched on on this branch of my family tree and keep running into dead-ends.

Thank you,

Amy

Is anyone researching Hypolita DELILLE?

This is all I know about her and any added information would be greatly appreciated:

She was born circa 1780-1790, of Marseilles, in France. Hypolita died before July 6, 1829. She married Juan Perez before 1810-1812, in St. Bernard, Louisiana.
