I'm a descendant of Robt W Rorex and Josephine Mayo who lived in Jones, LA in 1870-1900 time frame. Looking for any information about this family. Believe that Rorex came to LA from TN. His wife was born in MS or AL, but have no other information on her or her family of origin. Appreciate any help.

I am related to the Eldridge's; Parker's; and McAdams from Morehouse Parish, mostly Bastrop and Oak Ridge.

I am having trouble finding a Hardy Eldridge who was married to Elizabeth Boggan. The Boggan's came to Alabama from North Carolina. They were married in wilcox County Alabama in 1825. However, I am unable to find Hardy's parents or his grave. I suspect he might have served in the Civil War, but am not sure about that because he would have been pretty old. He does not show up after the 1860 census.

Any information would be appreciated.
Lisa (Eldridge) Wilkinson
lisavon1963@gmail.com

Hey, again, Cheryl,

Yes, the info you found is likely the "Forced Fit" that has been afloat for about 14 years. [John & Susannah Freer Waight/Waite (?)]

Ty [my son's] line may tie back into the line cited . . . but not via the same Francis who was the LAST child of John and Susannah.

Per Bible records our Francis had younger siblings b AFTER the death of John Waite [d 1807] Unfortunately, trees are being copied with the "forced fit" so it's going to be tougher to track the "real deal"

I cannot imagine the marriages recorded in the Bible being for Francis and his "COUSINS" about the same age as he --- but that one consideration would make me re-visit the "forced fit"

I am trying to find the parents of:

Siblings(?) who ALL m in Wilcox Co., AL 1834-1841:
FRANCIS ~1807 SC
JESSE 20 Apr 1809 SC
RUSSELL ~ 1810 NC or GA
MARY [m John Stanford]
ELIZABETH [m Thomas B. Billingsham]

I am trying to put the evidence I have on my tree as the "DIG" progresses.

Thank you soooo much for your time,
Sally

Hi Sally,

You may already be aware of this, but on the FamilySearch site [Mormon] I found that a woman named Joan has an amazing genealogy on the Waite family which goes back to 1588 in England. She has a Francis Waite [bn SC] who married a Nancy Armstrong on 6/20/1837 in Wilcox Co., AL. However, she has ca 1795 as his year of birth. She shows him as being born in Abbeville Co., SC. You didn't mention the name of Francis' wife. Was it Nancy? Is it possible that the couple married in Wilcox Co. is the couple you are researching?

As I mentioned, the genealogy goes back quite a few generations in SC and in England.

Also, Francis' father is shown as John. Remember that there is a John Waite on the 1820 SC census.

Cheryl

Cheryl,

I am delighted with what you have shared! They sure did elude me.

Your thoughts are right with mine on the Harrison being kin. My son's paternal line goes from:
Henry HARRISON Waite [1847 AL -1932 AL]
whose father was Francis Waite [b ~1807 SC & d 1860-1870 AL]

I am trying to find out who Francis Waite's parents were. Tracking Harrison's and Armstrong's may, indeed, lead me to the answer.

Thank you for your time and wonderful attention to detail.
Sally

Hi Sally,

I can tell you that not all of the Waite family disappeared after the 1850 census. I found Sarah and two of the boys on the 1860 census for Morehouse Parish. The name was "Wait". Sarah, LN [1817 SC] and JN [1836 AL] were in the household of JG Harrison [1828 AL]. Also in the household were BA Harrison [1830 AL] and JF Harrison [1837 AL]. I found the three Harrison boys on the 1850 census with their parents. The Harrison family was in dwelling #89 while the Waite family was in dwelling #92. I feel sure that the two families were related. Harrison and Thomas were of about the same age. It may be that they were first cousins. Harrison's mother could have been a Harrison before her marriage, thus she would have given her son the name of Harrison. Just a thought...

JG was James G, BA was Benjamin A and JF was John F. I also found that the Thomas Harrison family was in Wilcox Co., AL. It is likely that both families moved from SC together and then moved from AL together.

I was able to find James G [JG] Harrison on the 1870 and 1880 census.

Harrison Waite likely died between 1850 and 1860. Perhaps some of the kids did, too.

The only Waite in SC on the 1820 census was a John Waite who was likely the father of Harrison.

The "extra people" you asked about were likely children who died before the next census, so you would not know their names.

Hope this info helps in your research.

Cheryl

15 Aug 1850 US Federal Census - Ward 9, Morehouse, Louisiana
Family Number: 93
Harrison Waite 58-SC [abt 1792]
Sarah Waite 51-SC [abt 1799]
Leonard N Waite 30-SC [abt 1820]
John H Waite 23-AL [abt 1827]
James N Waite 17-AL [abt 1833]
Isham Franklin Waite 13-AL [abt 1837]
Elizabeth Amanda Waite 19-AL [abt 1831]
===========================
What happened to them after 1850?

Below, I have tracked "a" Harrison Waite whom I believe to be the same man with the same family. I have done acrobatics with SEARCHES on each of the family members listed on the 1850 Census above --- to no avail. I am not familiar with Louisiana genealogical resources other than what is online. It seems very odd to me that the entire family seems to have disappeared after the 1850 Census.

Any tidbits ???

BTW, I have put my comments in brackets for each of the cut&pasted record transcription abstracts in this post.
========================================
1830 US Federal Census - Wilcox, Alabama

Name: Harrison Waites
Free White Persons - Males - 5 thru 9: 1 [b 1819-1825] John(?)
Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14: 1 [b 1814-1820] Leonard?
Free White Persons - Males - 30 thru 39: 1 [b 1791-1800] Harrison(?)
Free White Persons - Males - 60 thru 69: 1 [b 1761-1770]	[The Patriarch?]
Free White Persons - Females - Under 5: 2 [b 1826-1830] E.A.
Clarence, If your grandmother was a Martha Coleman, from the Bonita/Jones area and she was African American, then she was in all probability my Grand Aunt Martha (Stella) Cunningham Coleman. She was the only Girl born to Robert and Cheney Cunningham among eight boys. She was 100 years old at death in the Bastrop, Mer Rouge, Bonita/Jones Area of Louisiana. My Grandfather (her brother) Jerry Patrick Cunningham moved to Pine Bluff Arkansas around the early 1940's to live with his daughters and only surviving Son Jesse. who was my father. There are many still living in these Louisiana areas as Colemans, Robinsons, Cunninghams, Parkers, Williams, Taylors, Johnsons, and other surnames not mentioned. Please reply if any of this sounds familiar

For what it is worth, I lived near Galion from the time I was about 4 until I was about 17. We had a small farm out from Galion on a road that connected hwy 165 to the Bonita Road. During the time I was there, Galion consisted of a cotton gin owned by the Brodnax family as I recall. It had three more or less general stores, two owned by Hudson's and one owned by Brodnax. There was a post office also. Most of the population lived outside that area on the various farms surrounding it. Galion was located midway more or less between Mer Rouge and Bonita on hwy 165. Most of the kids in that area attended school in Mer Rouge. If I can add anything I will be happy to accomodate if anyone is interested.

They had a bunch of kids and would have been old enough to have a son who could marry in '47.

Did Hazel ever marry a Knight?
There was a Bert (Bertrand)McCready and if that's the same one, their parents were Hollis and Lela.
They're buried buried in Bonita.

Hope this helps.

I was doing research on my Grandmother who passed around 1918. Her death certificate indicated that a Calion had certified her passing. She lived in Bonita Louisiana at the time. The certificate was sparsely documented so I have no other info on his status. I'm not sure whether he was a Doctor or Mortician or Coronary. His race and ethnic status is unknown, however, if you will look on the 1900-1910 US Census for Morehouse Parish Jones/Bonita you will see many listed with that name "Callion or Calion" as families. They are mostly African Americans.

She is still a looker, but happyly married to a really nice man this time.

There were a quiet a few children in the family; Clifton, Marie(passed away), Lonnie(passed away), Marion, Lula Belle, David, Charles, Mildred(my mom)Earnestine, Billy, Jerry(passed away), Ima Jean. There are 7 that are still alive. I have researched them and have a hard time going very far back on the Johnson side. I would love to go back in time and explain to the Census takers that it is very important that they are careful and accurate when they take down family information.

Per "Louisiana Post Offices" by John J. Germann (1990), there are two Gallion-related listings. Today a sign reads "Galion" with one "L" on Highway 165 North but listings in Germann's book are spelled "Gallion," and "De Gallion." Most villages and towns took their names from the post office established. De Gallion Post Office was established 19 Mar 1972, discontinued 6 Apr 1874; its first Postmaster, S. Boozman. In 1871 De Gallion had about 100 in its village or a population of 400 in its total area. It was re-established 19 Jul 1890, and discontinued 19 Aug 1890 with its mail then delivered from the Gallion, LA, Post Office. Gallion was established on 20 Aug 1890,then discontinued 31 Jul 1960; mail then delivered from Bonita, LA, Post Office. Its first Postmaster was Samuel W. Handy. Note under "De Gallion" states "was de Gallion. Pop (1890) about 500- - 2 stores, RR (railroad) station, and 3 dwellings," Named for Galier - an early trader and hunter." Sometimes obits state the burial was made in "Gallion." My research has shown the area around the Cherry Hill No. 2 Church in Mer Rouge, (which has a cemetery)may be the burial site mentioned as "buried in Gallion." On the other hand, the death certificate of Civil War Veteran Private Arthur Downs states he was buried in 1933 at "Galleon's Bridge." Today, his headstone is at the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church's Cemetery, Mer Rouge, LA. During further research with longtime residents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Keys of Mer Rouge, I was told by his wife that Galleon means a small stream; that "Galleon's Bridge" on Down's death certificate may simple mean his burial site was near the bridge over a nearby "galleon" (small stream) since the cemetery may not have had an official name. In 1933 residents may have called it the "Galleon's Bridge" cemetery before the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church assumed ownership over the cemetery now bearing its name. Despite the foregoing, one thing is definite. Galion, however spelled, is located now and in 1933, in Mer Rouge, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana.
