Jean-Louis CHAMPAGNE, chief of the Chitimacha Indians, Anthony MARCHON, and Madame FRANCOIS claimed land near Plaquemine in Iberville Parish, LA because several families of Chitimacha Indians had long lived on it by permission of the Spanish government (American State Papers, Claim 368). Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records show baptisms of two children of Jean Louis, in 1812 and 1819. After the 1848 settlement of the lawsuit against the U.S., did these Indians move to joint the Chitimacha at Charenton in St. Mary Parish. Did any also use the local surname DARDENNE?me DARDENNE?
