I was going to document that cemetery a few years ago and then I found it on line. Unfortunately I can't remember where! It may be in this list:

http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/eastbatonrouge/ebtr-cem.htm

Cemetery

I drive by a cemetery regularly and often wonder what cemetery it is. I could never find it listed in the EBR list of cemeteries.
It is on Jefferson Highway where it intersects with Tiger Bend Road and is also bordered by Quinn Drive.
I finally stopped today and copied the names which were capable of being read. On doing a search for some of the names in the website, I did not come up with any results.
They are all above-ground caskets, with most of them having no names other than a Desselle Funeral Home Marker on which the names have worn off. There are many more caskets that have been overrun with shrubbery. As I drove off, I noted there were also some caskets on Quinn Drive, behind the law office and apparently in a fenced off area.
I'm wondering if anyone knows the name or history of the cemetery. Apparently, is a very old black cemetery.
Thanks,
Jeanell

Names which could be read and some others which were partially visible.

Joyce M.

Jennifer,
Are you in the Baton Rouge area? If so the address for the cemetery is 1500 Main St, B.R., La 70802,
phone 225-766-1967.
Here's the map http://www.la-cemeteries.com/Maps/East%20Baton%20Rouge/EBR79....
Also, LE COMITE' DES ARCHIVES DE LA LOUISIANE has published the burials of the cemeteries back in 2001.
"St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Baton Rouge, Louisiana"
by Judy Riffel and Louis Altazan
145 pages soft cover
It is a listing of tombstone inscriptions from St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery dating back to 1827. Includes extracts from Baton Rouge Civil Death Registers and Death Certificates. The cost is $27.50 (Non-Members), $15.00 (Le Comite' Members). You can purchase the book from LeComite at http://www400.sos.louisiana.gov/ARCHIVES/archives/arch-5.htm or search for a library that has a copy. If you are in Baton Rouge, the State Archives Research Room has a copy and so does EBR Bluebonnet Library, Genealogy Department. I hope this helps

Can someone tell me where Catholic Cemetery is located in BR? I have had someone ask me through RAOGK to take some photos of tombstones there, but I can't seem to find a cemetery called that. Is it the same as St. Joseph Cemetery? I've also seen a compilation of tombstones from Catholic Cemetery posted online, but I didn't see the RAOGK requestor's names in there. The compilation does not state where the cemetery is located.

Wow, that story absolutely gives me goosebumps. Thanks so much for taking the time to type it out! My software agrees, Mike (my husband) is Cyril's second cousin twice removed.

GEDCOM is for use with genealogy software; I can email you a PDF of the Vay family information, as it would probably be easier. You can email me at sn00t (those are two zeroes) at yahoo.com.

As far as more information, the best source I can think of would be papers left behind by Mike's aunt who passed away in September of 2007. I was told that she left boxes of research on the Regan and Vay families (her mother was a Vay, Gustave's daughter), so I could envision there being further information there. The boxes are currently in the possession of Mike's uncle in New Orleans (and we're in California). I was told I could look through them, so I've been meaning to write and ask to have them sent to me. This gives me good impetus to do so and see if there is any more information on Cyril in the files. Seems like with a story like this there ought to be. I will also ask around the Regan family to see if anyone has heard anything.

Looking forward to your email,
-Jennifer

Hello,

I believe Cyril K. is descended from Alexander Gabriel Rossini Vay, Gustave's brother. He was the son of Lester Vinn Vay and Cecilia Kron. Cyril Eugene Vay (1887-1954) was Gustave's son. I can email a GEDCOM if you want to know more about the family or keep them straight.

I'm afraid that's about all I know directly about Cyril K., although I am quite interested in the story you mention. Have you ordered Service records? (http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/public/g...).

Let me know if I can be of any more help. Do keep in touch with your findings, as I am always anxious to learn more about the Vay family.

I am so in hopes someone can help me find the Cemetery and directions to its location, where Bill Evans,Jazz Icon, is buried. He was born William John Evans 16 August 1929 in Plainfield,NJ, and died in New York 15 Sept. 1980, but my son tells me he was buried in Baton Rouge,LA.
My son has been a fan of Bill Evans since he was in high school. He even named a son after him. This same son and his sweet family are presently traveling to Florida from Texas for a vacation, and plan to return through New Orleans/Baton Rouge area. He wants to find Bill Evans grave so they can take pictures of his son, named Evans, at the gravesite of his namesake. I am hoping someone will see this and know where Bill Evans is buried, or knows how to find out. They will be returning to Texas in about 8 days. So I look forward to any kind response before then. Thanks Sherry in Texas
Hi,

My name is Michael Davis. I'm looking for my biological mother's grave. I'm told she died maybe 5 years ago, in Louisiana and was likely buried somewhere in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her name was Mitty Sue Fortenberry.

I've done a lot of searching online and in newspapers trying to find her obituary but haven't found any success. I think her family was embarrassed by her and did not want to have an obituary listed, which is probably what's making it so hard to find her. Either that or I'm just not very good at this.

At any rate, I'd very much like to visit her grave or at least know exactly when it was that she died. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

I saw your post regarding G.L. Vay. I just finished tracing him in the U.S. Census record. I am trying to find relatives of a WWII soldier, Cyril K. Vay or Cyril K. De Vay. I noticed that G.L. had a son named Cyril E. but could not link him to Cyril K. other than same first and last name. Cyril K. was the son of Cecilia Vay. Cecelia Vay and Cyril E. Vay are listed in different sections of the 1920 census. I was wondering if you know anything about the WWII soldier? I am trying to verify if he was on a POW train with my uncle. Cyril K. Vay was killed during the war and is buried in the American Cemetery in France.
Thanks for your help.

I forgot to include the French website:
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/memoiredeguerre/convoi44/victime...

Cyrtl E Devray is between Matt D. Campbell and Alexander Kowalski. I noticed that the middle initial is "E". In another instance, the French listed the next of kin from the dog tag rather than the actual victim's name. This raises the question if Cyril E. Vay had guardianship or some other relationship with Cyril K Vay. I noticed in the 1920 census that Lester Vin Vay was not listed as a member of the household; Cecilia was listed as married, head of household.

I have no explanation where the "De" Vay name came from other that it's on all the military records.

http://www.wwiimemorial.com/registry/cemetery/search/pframe....

http://www.wwiimemorial.com/registry/wardept/pframe.asp?Hono...

http://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=466&mtc...

http://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=893&mtc...

Thanks for your response. I have done a lot of research on the soldiers who were on a POW train with my uncle. I'll try to keep the story as brief as possible.

The soldiers were killed during the strafing of the train by Allied planes on Aug 6 & 7 1944. My uncle was on the train and was injuried but survived. I found the names of the victims on a French website that commemorates the victims. Some of the names were difficult to decipher. Cyril De Vay's name was listed by the French as Cyrtl Devray. I found Cyril De Vay by looking through the NARA POW records for anyone named Cyril. I then found Cyril on the American Battle Monuments website as being buried in the American Cemetery at Normandy. His date of death is listed as August 23, 1944,the same date as 3 of the other victims. His POW record says he was shot while escaping.

I believe that Cyril was held in a German POW camp in Rennes, France. Rennes was a collection point for prisoners taken in western France. The three prison camps and POW hospital located in Rennes held thousands of
prisoners - Allied soldiers, members of the French Underground, the French Forces of the Interior, Communists, Jews, and any one else the Germans didn't like. Early in the morning of 3 August 1944, 40 Allied POWs, including my uncle, and 1500 other deportees were loaded into train cars called 40 x 8's, intended to hold 40 people or 8 horses. At least 3 of the cars contained women.

The train pulled out very early the morning of 3 August 1944 for a destination unknown to the passengers. The Germans camouflaged the train with tree limbs and did not mark the train as a POW or Red Cross train. The train was equipped with a couple of antiaircraft guns.

The next day, 4 August, at 10 a.m., General George Patton's Army liberated Rennes.

The train slowly made its way through several towns in western France including Redon, Nantes, and Angers. Throughout the journey, my uncle could hear the nearby Allied artillery. The train was just out of reach of the
advancing Allied forces.

Upon reaching the town of Langeais, France, on 6 August 1944, the train could not proceed any farther; the train tracks had been destroyed by an Allied bombing attack. The townspeople of Langeais brought food and water to the
passengers who had not received anything to eat or drink from the Germans since the train left Rennes three days earlier. My uncle was given a raw egg by a farmer; to this day my uncle remembers how good it tasted.

Later that day, while the train still sat on the tracks, four Allied P-47s strafed the convoy. The townspeople along with the deportees and POWs who could escape fled.

My uncle was hit in the hip by a 50 caliber bullet while still in the train car. His crew mate sitting next to him, T/Sgt. Barney Arnold, was hit in the chest and died immediately. My uncle pried open a loose floor board and crawled out of the car to a small building alongside the tracks. Leaning against the side of the building, he watched German guards fire machine guns indiscriminately at those who fled until he passed out.

My uncle was transported to a triage center set up in a nearby wine cellar. The injured were treated in there; the bodies of the dead were stored in the cellar awaiting identification and burial. The following day, Monday,
August 7th, the fighter planes returned and strafed the convoy again. A total of 23 people were killed including nine American soldiers, three British soldiers, two Senegalese soldiers, four Resistance fighters, one
Langeais townsperson, and four Germans. Seventy were injured by the strafing.

On Tuesday, August 8th, the surviving deportees were either force marched or transported by truck to the next train station where the convoy reassembled and resumed its journey. That same day, the 18 military victims were buried in a mass grave in the Langeais cemetery. The mayor of the town kept a dog tag from each victim. The graves were marked with simple wooden crosses with the names of the victims.

Later in August, Langeais was liberated by Allied Forces. On or about August 23, the bodies of the military victims were disinterred and identified by the U.S. Army with the aid of the mayor and the townspeople of Langeais. The remains were moved to St. Indre-de-Eure Military Cemetery on January 27, 1945, awaiting instructions from family members. The cemetery is located approximately fifteen miles southeast of Evreux and 15 miles northeast of Dreux, France.

Americans Alex Kowalski, Water Solomon, and Matt D. Campbell were later buried in the American Cemetery, Colleville sur Mer, Normandy, France. Sidney Magaziner
was buried in Long Island National Cemetery in New York. The bodies of John Taylor, Barney Arnold, and Gordon Norwood were returned for burial in family or private cemeteries in the United States.

I believe Cyril De Vay to be the Cyrtl Devray as the date of death is the same as 3 other victims and that he was shot while escaping. The testimonies I have read on the French website along with my uncle's recollection of fleeing prisoners being shot corroborates the POW record's status of Cyril De Vay being shot while escaping.

I haven't yet requested serivce records for Cyril since I just figured out last night that he may be one of the strafing victims. I have requested records for the other 7 the victims and have received one record. Many of the records at St. Louis were destroyed in a fire in 1973. I have received letters from St. Louis stating that limited info is available on one victim and a second victim's record is extremely damaged. I've had better luck with another agency in providing information if they can find the victim's file. I have made 3 requests to this agency and received one document. I'll try them for Cyril's record.

I would like to have the GEDCOM. I haven't worked with a GEDCOM, so do I need special software?

I tried to figure out how your husband would be related to Cyril K. Does "second cousin once removed" sound right? It seems like a distant relative -- do you think anyone in your husband's family might have a recollection of Cyril K?

Thanks for your help, I'll keep you posted on what I find out.
