I am trying to see if my Miller family, who died in Ponca City, Oklahoma had any connection to the 101 Ranch owned by George W Miller. Specifically, Joseph P Miller, b 1832 Ohio, d 1936 Ponca City and wife Cathari (No maiden name) died 1931 Ponca City, OK. I believe that Cathari was Indian, but not sure if Ponca or Osage. Anyone with info that can help me trace my family and their Native American linage, please help.

Nicole, I am a descendant of John A. Couillard and Ellen Gilbert Couillard. Their son, James Gilbert Couillard married Mary Lacoste Profilet and had the following children: Jeff, Quegles, Natalie, Doris, Ellen Immelda (Nellie), Louis Emile Profilet and Gilbert. Doris was my paternal Grandmother. I presently live in Chicago, but will be visiting my parents in Natchez the weekend of March 23, 2013 and hope, weather permitting, to visit the Maitland Plantation Cemetery to view the grave sites. If you will be available, it would be nice to connect.

Taken from "History of Old Salem (Cole's Creek) Baptist Church"
The early Protestant settlers in the Southwest Mississippi Territory found themselves in a situation where they were forced to submit to the rule of the Spanish authorities and the Roman Catholic Church.
This group of settlers had moved to the Cole's Creek area of Jefferson County early in 1780 from the great Pee Dee River Valley of South Carolina. They traveled by wagon and then flat boats down the Holston River, the Ohio River, and finally the Mississippi River. They landed in the area where they had received British land grants about 20 miles north of Natchez on Cole's Creek (known as Boyd's Creek on arrival but the name was soon changed to Cole's Creek).
The Spanish laws of the province would not allow the settlers to gather together as a church as was their practice. Thus they would hold secret meetings at private dwellings each week while several of their number stood guard outside watching for "suspicious" persons and acting as if they were just enjoying a leisurely, friendly, neighborly visit. These meetings included exhortation, reading and expounding the Scriptures and prayer. Christians were quickened and unbelievers converted.
However, in October, 1791, these settlers organized the first Baptist church in the Southwest Mississippi Territory. They met in the home of Margaret Baird Stampley (wife of Henry Stampley) in the village of Stampley. The church was called Salem Baptist Church and was commonly referred to as Cole's Creek Baptist Church. The seven charter members included Richard Curtis, Jr. (a licensed minister), Benjamin Curtis, William Curtis, John Jones, Ealiff Lanier, William Thompson and Margaret Stampley. After Spanish rule ended in 1798 a church was built about one mile south of Stampley. A historical marker denotes the site of the church's original foundation.

He's listed as a Pvt. in the War of 1812, LA 10th & 20th consolidated militia. He was born about 1792 in France, according to 1880 census info for his son, David Roach (my ggrandfather). We have no info on his parents, how he got to LA, where he came from, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Lisa,

I can't remember how far the books go back at the Catahoula Parish Court house... hove you called the Clerk of Courts office there?? They are very helpful and would be able to ell you a few basics. I won't be going up there for a while or I'd look for you! I believe those records have been microfilmed. Have you looked at those?

I'd love to help you if I can... and if you aren't able to find out more, I'd be happy to look next time I'm up that way! Let me know how you fair, ok?

Yes, I did find it.

Searching after finding the board message mentioning George lead me to the book on the Catahoula genweb archive. And the other entries under variations of his name.

It looks to me like the author has essentially copied the earliest conveyance books. But do you know if it is a word-for-word transcription or just a abstraction of the key points? It seems to me (from many of the entries) to be an abstraction but I'm not positive. Another question is, is it all records located in the books?

Unfortunately, Catahoula seems to be early records poor.

Lisa

Anyone experienced with researching early records in Catahoula Parish that can provide some advice? I've researched all over the USA, Canada and Germany but I am new to LA research.

A probate ad in 1879 and 1886 and subsequent research led me recently to a cousin who all that was recorded about him was "he married and southern woman and went south." He was from New York born 1779.

South apparently is Catahoula Parish. I have him on a census in Harrisonburg in 1820. I can't find him before or after anywhere in USA. He daughter ended up at some point later in Mississippi and then elsewhere. From a post on this board (regarding another family) I know George W Rider bought property in Sicily Island in 1819 thru auction.

I found an online transcription (not sure if complete or not) of conveyance book c that had two different records of debts that were owed to him. The first had no date but called him deceased. The second (listed in the next record) said succession of George W Rider and was dated 12 Feb 1832. So I'm guessing he was dead by 1832 possibly before since he is not on the 1830 census.

I checked for microfilms of Probate in the Family History Catalog. They are called successions but start in 1846. What about earlier records, like early 1830s or late 1820s?

Would earlier probates be in the Notarial Books which are listed as conveyance in one spot?

Thanks for any advice.

Lisa

Since I don't have any family stories to go by, I would like to know where the name originated from. I have not found a plantation or owner by this name. If you know otherwise, please let me know. Or, if you know what family plantation they were on, I would love to know. Thank You for your assistance.

Hi,

I have family in this area also, maybe I can give you some ideas? Catahoula Parish Court House in Harrisonburg is your best bet, and the parish library is almost next door and is not to be dismissed.

Depending on where in Catahoula Parish your family lived and time period, your records could be in what is now, LaSalle Parish in Jena. (LaSalle was cut out of half of Catahoula parish about 1910 or so.)

The libraries are close to the court houses in that area so if you can, hit the court house and library in each parish. My sister and I did a road trip like that about 2 years ago and are planning 2 more this year... we did 5 parishes in 3 days like that!

Good luck!

Hi littleraven7408: We are going on a "roots road trip" to Iberville and Catahoula parishes April 4-7, 2012 and hope to find some information about my husband and sister-in-law's GG-grandmother Sophia Ball/Balls/Paul. She lived in Catahoula Parish and was listed on 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses. Do you have any recommendations where we might go to find out about her and her children? She was living with my husband's GGrandfather in Bayou Goula, Iberville Parish according to 1910 census. We think she may have passed away there. The family name was changed to Kearney (someone may have run afoul of the law??) but Sophia and her children were all Ball surnames in the censuses. Thanks for any help or advice you can give us!

Looking for parents of Charles Butler Smith

Charles Butler Smith, born feb 1844, died Jan 5 1905 in Enterprise, catahoula parish at Catahoula baptist church cemetery.

I have heard but cannot confirm that his parents are John Smith and Elizabeth Lacy. Census records say his father, "John" was born in New York. I think his parents must have died young because there is a census record of Charles Butler living with an older Rentha Smith in 1850.

Thanks!
