Lisa, have you checked the alternate spelling, Phennel? I'm puzzled by Documents having Fennell. I've looked every where I know and there appears to be a group that goes by Fennell and one by Phennel...Code's son, James Curtis, went by Phennel, as did his decendants. Confused.
Ann

Old (original) Rocky Mount Cemetery, Ringgold

Hello all!

Have been chatting with Ann Skinner Boykin about the Old Rocky Mount Cemetery in Ringgold. Not the "current" Rocky Mount Cemetery, but the "old" one which was located somewhere out in the woods & was virtually destroyed when the woods were cleared in the 1980's.

Ann was told of the cemetery's location and recently went there with a friend & found some headstones still remaining (she told me of one still standing, another lying on the ground & yet another that was broken with only the death date left).

We know that the burials in this older cemetery were relatives of people now buried at the "current" Rocky Mount. Francis Eugene Franklin (1859-1920) & wife Ida Laura E Kirkpatrick (1867-1899) married 16 Sep 1884 in Bienville Parish (Book D pg 301). 20 Aug 1901 Francis E married 2nd wife Lizzie Neal (Niel) Skipper. Francis E & both his wives are buried at the "current" Rocky Mount.

Lizzie Skipper's first husband was Code (Phenel) Fennel who she married 4 Jan 1890 in Bienville Parish. They had two children, James Curtis b Dec 1895 TX & Oza F b 20 Mar 1898. Code and Oza F are both buried at the "old" Rocky Mount Cemetery.

Ann found the marker for Oza F (would this have been a boy or a girl??) & also found the lower portion of Code's headstone.

Does anyone know any more about this old cemetery?? Why was it abandoned for the new location? Is there an obscure list of burials somewhere?? Or does anyone know of anyone who was buried there? Additionally, does anyone know anything about the family of Code (Phenel) Fennel??

It breaks my heart that it was so torn up when the trees were cut.

Ann & my husband are related on the Franklin side and both the Franklin & Skipper families moved from Ringgold to Epps, West Carroll Parish, LA in the early 1920's along with a lot of other Ringgold residents.

Please contact Ann @ jboykin9@gmail.com if you have any answers and I'd appreciate being kept in the loop, too. My email is lisafranklin2004@earthlink.net

Thanks much!

Lisa
Lizzie Neal Skipper (1871-1948) & "Code" Fennell & F E Franklin

Neal Skipper (Lizzie Neal Skipper) married Code Fennell 4 Jan 1890 in Bienville Parish, LA.

As Mrs L N Phenel she married F E Franklin 20 Aug 1901 in Red River Parish, LA. Lizzie & 2nd husband are buried at Rocky Mount Cemetery, west of Ringgold. 1st husband Code & first child, Oza F, are buried at the "old" Rocky Mount Cemetery which for whatever reason was abandoned in favor of the present location.

Sarah Fennel married Walker Honey 10 Mar 1887 in Bienville Parish. I'm taking the leap that she was likely the sister of Code.

Does anyone know anything about the family of Sarah & Code Fennel?? I've seen a few spelling variations - one as Phenel or Phennel so I guess how it was spelled depended on the person doing the spelling.

All help much appreciated.

Lisa

John A Harrell is a maternal great great grandfather of mine. He married Eliza Simmons. Her parents are Luke R Simmons and (we think) Priscilla Soule' Simmons. He was a state legislator in Pike County, Alabama, and before that served in the state legislature of North Carolina, from Columbus County. He is credited with the naming of Troy, Alabama.
Elder (Rev) John Ausborn Harrell officiated at the marriage of his son Rev George Mercer Harrell to Emma Caroline Prothro 22 October 1872 at Saline, Louisiana. Witnesses were T.B. Harrell and F. l. Hardy. Wedding took place at the bride's brother's house, Thomas L. Prothro. This wedding certificate is in the Harrell family bible of George Mercer Harrell which I now have. I too have grave photos taken at Mount Lebanon Cemetery. Hope this is of use to you. - AJ Frederick ajfred@bellsouth.net

African-American Families in Bienville Parish

My Bryan family owned slaves in Bienville Parish. A few years ago, I found a family bible transcription with names and birth dates of 20+ enslaved persons. This led me to do more research and in all, I have records of 43 persons found in the bible transcription and/or legal records. A large number of people listed are Iversons.

It has taken me two years to put this together. I hope that this will help others looking for their family. Click on the link below to see records of these 43 persons

http://slaveryandthebryanfamily.blogspot.com/

It has been some time since you posted this, but I see you did not find much about the Williams family that met the Meltons. My Williams family owned a farm out in that area and there are Melton ancestors back in the tree, mostly from the Virginia days, I think, back in 1600's and early 1700's. I think the farm was near Midway. They later moved into Bienville and Ruston. Electious (various spellings) Williams was my great grandfather's father. His son, John Wesley 'Tobe' Williams was alive at that time, but I think he would have been in town by then, as he was Clerk of the Court in Ruston. The farm remained in the family until my grandfather died, and my dad sold the farm to cover debts incurred by his brother, J.W.Williams. I would be happy to compare notes if you are still searching.

(I have info on Joseph Obie and Ludie Pearl's children also but since this is your line you probably have more info than I. We need to compare notes here).

I can also provide info on Thomas Jefferson, Jr.'s children (this is my line)

The Southern Line:

I will start with Samuel Lushion Southern. Ludie Pearl Southern b. 15 Apr 1887 d. 15 Mar 1974 in Castor, Bienville, Louisiana
5. Butler Southern b. Apr 1890 in Louisiana
6. Also I have some of the death certificates and quite a bit more information on the families. I can also provide you with some source information. Joseph Obe Wood is related to Thomas J but my mind is so tired right now can't put it all together. We just got home from being out of town for a week and driving for 2 days to get home.
The Thomas Jefferson Wood buried at The Ridge Cemetery in Castor, Louisiana was born 12/9/1879 and died 7/4/1943. He was the husband of Lular Belle Wood who was born 3/22/1884 and died 6/16/1954. I am pretty sure that my great-grandmother is Ludie Pearl Wood who was born 5/15/1887 and died on 3/24/1974. My mother, Peggy Sue Carter, daughter of Mae Smith Carter and granddaughter of Sam and Willie Smith who were killed in the Castor tornado of 1950, was married to Maron Obe Wood -born 5/5/1938 and died on 10/26/1994.
Yes, the spelling is correct for my family. I have found both spellings within the same family. Thank you for your help. My George was married to Mary and lived in the Bienville, Lincoln, Montgomery area until his death in 1871. I have found the family in the 1870 Census- Jackson Parish. I called the LA College Library and asked for information. The nice lady at the resource desk found that he was appointed to the staff in Sept 1859 to teach theology. I was wondering if the family attended church in the area while he taught at the university. I am trying to find documentation of the family, specifically the mother, Mary Mathewes and the son, Charles. Any church records that list the family would work!

Are you sure it is spelled Mathewes?
Didn't have any luck in 1850-1860-1870 census, the UN closed down after Civil War .......

wikimedia
Mount Lebanon was probably the first permanent settlement in what is now Bienville Parish. Its pioneers were Baptistsfrom South Carolina who quickly established a church andschool. The school became Mount Lebanon University in 1853, but closed during the Civil War to serve as a high school and a Confederate hospital. After the war the school reopened. After years of struggling, it was consolidated in 1906 through the Louisiana Baptist Convention into Louisiana College in Pineville in Rapides Parish in Central Louisiana.

Found this on different spelling:
1870 census
Iberville Parish, LA Plaquemine
George Matthews age 40, 1830, born Mississippi
white male occupation school teacher
wife martha age 37 KY
child Kate age 8

Hi, Gail, I believe that the parents of H.T. (Houston T.) Owens were Thomas and Rebecca (Jordan) Owens but this is not yet proven. Thomas was born c1780 in Virginia and Rebecca born c1793 in Tennessee; they migrated to Alabama probably about 1830. Thomas died there in 1855. There is some evidence that they were in South Carolina in the early 1810s. Another child Stewart Owens was reportedly born in SC; he also migrated to Bienville Pr. Another family that is interconnected is the Caskeys who came from South Carolina. This is not much but hopefully it will give you some clues.

Denise

Hi Denise,

Do you have any info on H. T. Owens parents and grandparents?

My ggg-grandmother was Elizabeth Owens who married Isaac Thomas. Elizabeth was born about 1808 in SC and died in Bienville Parish, LA sometime between 1870 and 1880.
Isaac Thomas was born about 1800 and they both lived in Greenville District, SC

In 1824 elizabeth Owens is recorded as joining the Fork Shoals Baptist Church. She married Issac Thomas about 1826 in that same vacinity of Greenville District. The Thomas, Camp, and Sullivant families lived on the Reddy River and adjacent creeks in the area south of Fork Shoals and Pelzer, in the southern part of Greenville County which is Lauren County today I think.

I do not have any info on the parents of Elizabeth Owens.
I thought that it was such a coincidence that there are Owens families in Bienville Parish. I had not given thought to any Owens family members migrating into Bienville Parish with my Thomas family. This may mean a new avenue to pursue and a lead to finding Elizabeth's family.

Issac Thomas, Elizabeth and family migrated from SC to Noxumbee Co, MS about 1838 and then into Bienville Parish, La by 1851. Isaac died in 1854 and his succession record in Bienville Parish is LA. #1487. Elizabeth lived out her life in Bienville Parish. Their son James Thomas married Ophelia Ridlehoover Mobley (a young widow of civil war vet J B Mobley) and this is my line. James and Ophelia Thomas' daughter Laura married Joseph Preston Wright (my g-grandparents).

Any info that you have and are willing to share on your Owens line going backwards would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gail Walsh
gail_walsh18@yahoo.com

The Solomon W. Mathews you mentioned in the Bienville Parish documents was born in 1859 and was murdered in 1921. His wife was Mary Jane Stevens, his children: daughters Jessie, Minnie, Ruby and Bertha; one son, Lewis (possibly spelled Louis or Louie) Mathews. Solomon is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ringgold, Bienville Parish, Louisiana. Surrounding parishes (counties) of Bienville are Claiborne, Red River, Natchitoches and Jackson. Through newspaper articles about his murder (for his money), it was mentioned he owned property in Red River Parish, where his murderers came lived. It seems to me that the 1870 Solomon Mathews could definitely be the same one.

There are two Tooke cemeteries not far from each other. The first one, that Mr. Byrd visited, is the African American cemetery. You can find it on findagrave here:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=69...;

There are only 3 burials listed here right now, but I know there are many more, as I have visited it. The second one is where the Shehees and Tookes are at and you can find it on findagrave here:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=69...;

I photographed every stone there and added them to this one. This cemetery is in the process of being restored, and many of the old unreadable stones have been replaced with newer stones. There is a large pile of the old stones piled up in the woods next to the cemetery.

There are two listings for cemeteries in Bienville Parish. I did not find Pomp or Leon there, but there are a number of Brices buried there in cemeteries other than the Brice Cemetery. See http://www.cemeteries-of-tx.com/Louisiana/Bienville/ListBien... and http://interment.net/us/la/bienville.htm.

Good luck with your research!

I have both books entitled "History of Bienville Parish." I only found one reference that may be something that you're interested in. In Volume II entry #17 "From the Diary of C.B. Johnson" on p. 44, he states, "May 21, 1924 P.C. Brice died." Don't know if this is your Pomp or not.

Yes, great detective work! this is my Grandfather Lewis[Louis] and my Grandmother Lillie Hare [Adams].
Lillie was married first to Clarence Marcus Detweiller,They had the two children he never adopted them, then He died. Lillie married Louis Adams
and as far as I can tell he is only on the 1930 census. After louis died She married Rueben Davis. The Kathleen you mentioned below is my Mother.I still am thinking Louis maybe tied into Holden Adams as Louis mentioned his Father was born in South Carolina on the 1930 census. The Holden adams family from what I have read came from South Carolina, then to Louisiana and on to Montgomery county,Texas. At least I have seen both lines claiming South Carolina and Montgomery county,Texas.
It seems like a logical choice to look more closly at Holden's family
Thanks for the info.
Mike

If I have the correct Adams.... your grandmother was Lillie Mae Hare, daughter of Thomas Hare and Susan Annabell ???. She may have married someone last name of Dettweiller first as in the 1930 census she is married to Lewis Adams but William (4 yrs) and Clarence (2 yrs) Detweiller also live in the household. Later, in 1940 census, Lillie is married to Ruben Davis. Both Detweiller children now have last name of Adams, so might have been adopted. Other children from 1940 census are: Cathlene Adams, 9; Lonie Jean Adams, 8; Margaret Adams, 7; Christine Adams, 5; Joe Ann Adams, 3; Harriet Adams and Thomas Adams, both age 1. Is this your line?

Holden Adams and Delilah Brosset Adams died around Conroe, TX and are buried in the Willow Creek Cemetery. Their children were: James (Jim) Adams, who I believe stayed around that area; Mollie Adams, who married and lived in Arkansas; Richard Adams, who may have died young as I do not have any information for him; John Quicy Adams, who lived in Montgomery County, TX and died in Haskell, TX; isaac Shepard Adams, Montgomery County, TX; Jack Adams I have no information for; Hardy Adams lived most of his adult life in Arkansas; Sherod Adams lived most of his adult life in Arkansas; Anne Adams died in Arkansas; Betty Adams lived her adult life in Arkansas.
Holden had a brother also named James (Jim) and he also lived around Conroe and is buried in Willow Creek Cemetery. I do not know his children's names but that will be an interesting project for future. What birth and death dates for your grandfather Louis? I can key them in ancestry.com and see if he is on any tree
Ann Neal

A book of maps "Family Maps of Bienville Parish, Louisiana" shows the original land patents. I looked at the entries for Brice--several names with parcels 1837 to 1853. Several Pauls (last name Paul) with parcels 1882 to 1906. McDowells--4 names, two are 1856 and 1860, but the ones you are probably most interested in are Millard McDowell, a land patent of 40 acres in Sect. 4, T15N R8W in 1908, and Walter McDowell, 40 acres in Sect. 2, T17N R8W in 1919. The latter was just over the line in Webster Parish.

Hi Martha, I know this post is over 10 years old, but you never know. I am looking for my gg grandparents. my g grandmother was Tennessee Pinquite Gough. She was an orphan. It has been passed down by word of mouth that her father was William Gough. He died before she was born. Her mother was Martha Williams, a Choctaw Indian, and died in childbirth, June 30, 1876. The doctor present, William V Taylor named her after his home state. So far I can find no evidence (besides my g grandmother!) that any of these people ever existed! Please contact me with any information you might have. One last thing, Tennessee married James Henry White. Thanks! sincerely, Laura White Lewis

This was a subscription printing. There are no more available. Families pass them down to their descendants. You can find them in some genealogical libraries such as the Shreve Memorial Library Broadmoor Branch Genealogical Section and in the Bienville Parish Libraries in Arcadia and Ringgold. I don't know if they are available through interlibrary loan or not, but you might try at your local library if you cannot go to one of the mentioned libraries.

Elsewise, you have to rely on someone to do lookouts to help you out.
