There are several Woodlawn Plantations in different states. The one in Louisiana that was so well photographed by Robert Tebbs in 1929 burned down in 1962. Seems like they all went during the 60's. People were not yet aware of the values of the history involved. Very sad to me.

RF in TX

The church in Plattenville is the Church of the Assumption. It is very old and the records are published in the set of books for the Baton Rouge Diocese. The records in the books date from the 1700s to the year 1900. The books are available at all local libraries.

Hope this helps.

Cheryl

I found all of this and more on Familysearch.org. Its free to use. It even lists your great great great and great great great great grandparents. I think If you found the church listed you might be able to better locate the cemetery wher he is buried. Make sure to look at the bottom of the page where you go to user submitted trees. That is where I got the info. Looks like you might have some cousins looking also. You will also be able to trace back his wifes lineage also. This is one of the best family histories I have seen.

Pedigree Resource File
View person in Pedigree mode

name: Georges Auguste /Falgout/
gender:male
birth: 4 June 1854 Raceland, LaFourche, Louisiana, USA
death: 13 August 1892 , of Assumption, Louisiana, USA

burial: 14 August 1892
St. Philomena Ch., Labadieville, Assumption, Louisiana, USA

marriage: 23 January 1888
St. Philomena Ch., Labadieville, Assumption, Louisiana, USA

Parents
father: Jean Baptiste George /Falgout/ Jr.

mother: Celeste Justine /Robichaux/

Marriages (1)
spouse: Florence Ernestine /Juneau/

marriage: 23 January 1888
St. Philomena Ch., Labadieville, Assumption, Louisiana, USA

2 Children,

hild 1: George Joseph Theodule /Falgout/
gender: male
birth: 3 January 1890 , of Assumption, Louisiana, USA

death: 2010 of Golden Meadow, Lafourche, Louisiana, USA

christening: 6 January 1890
St. Philomena Ch., Labadieville, Assumption, Louisiana, USA

child 2: Marie Elda /Falgout/

gender: female

birth: 17 March 1892 , of Assumption, Louisiana, USA

death:

christening: 21 March 1892
St. Philomena Ch., Labadieville, Assumption, Louisiana, USA

St Philomena Church Office

Address: 118 Convent St, Labadieville, LA 70372

Phone:(985) 526-4247

Hours:

Closed on Saturday.

Hi Bev,

After I had written, I remembered that it may be possible that the obit appeared in the New Orleans paper. The papers are on the Internet and I checked both Baton Rouge and New Orleans. However, though the Baton Rouge paper begins at 1/1/1986, the New Orleans paper does not begin until 1/1/1989. Therefore, though you can not check on the Internet, perhaps someone can check at a library. You may want to go to the Orleans Parish Message Board and ask for an obit lookup in "The Times Picayune". Or, you could also try the East Baton Rouge Parish Message Board. The State Library has the NO papers on microfilm.

I would look it up, but I don't have access to the newspapers on microfilm.

Sorry for the confusion.

Cheryl

Hi

Look to North Carolina for Gabriel Beasley. You and I are cousins if you are a Trousdale and Gabriel Beasley descendant. Gabriel was born N.C. 1/12/1785. Moved to Louisiana and married a widow (Sarah (nee McWilliams b. Ireland abt 1780)Burns. Sarah was first married to John Burns, b. Ireland. They ended up in South Louisiana and later moved to Morehouse Pparish in N. Louisiana. John died abt 1811 and Sarah married Gabriel about 1811 and moved back to Assumption parish near Napoleonville. I'm a descendant of Sarah and John's daughter Sarah Burns.John and Sarah Burns had 3 children, Maria, Sarah and Willoughby) Gabriel and Sarah raised the children at Wildwood Plantation near Napoleonville. I have seen information regarding the Trousdales (they are from NC and TN) and their close association with my g. grandmother Sarah Zenor (a cousin ). They often wen to "the city NOLA" for fun and entertainment in the late 1800s. My line goes like this: (1)Sarah and John Burns// (2)Sarah Burns and David Lee Robbins Jr.// (3)Lucretia Robbins and George Zenor// (4) Sarah Zenor and William Marshall Magill//(5) Lucretia Magill and George Davison// (6) Zenora Davison and Owen Duffy// (7)Alison Magill Duffy. Hope this reaches you

Alison
alison.duffy@tn.gov

She was daughter of Baptist preacher/clergyman Moulton/Morton/Morse/Moton Carter living with him and his family (wife Charlotte, her bro Hezekiah on the 1900 census) living Ascension, LA. Her brother Rev Harris Hezekiah Carter, was my great grandfather. I am interested in finding out more about her and her descendants.

I don't know if this is the right plantation or not. I spent several summers as a kid on a plantation out side of Napolanville, La. I beleive it is the Enola plantation.
The sugar mill was almost in the front yard of the home. My uncle and aunt, Clarance and Bernice live in it while my uncle was the overseerer. I think that's what it's called. If you receive this and have any infomation or pictures of this home could you e-mail me a print so I can see if that's it or not. I have great memories of this home......

Thank you

Have you tried ordering his death certificate from the state archives? Burial places weren't always listed on older certificates, but they sometimes were.

Would this be him?
Mouton Carter died 5/10/1938 at age 83 in Ascension Parish

If so, you would need Page: 5503 Volume: 13 of the 1938 statewide death records.

You previously listed Fanny's date of death as 3/5/1920. According to the state death index, her name is listed as Fanny Moore Wallace. If you want to order her certificate, you'd need Page: 2310 Volume: 6 of the 1920 statewide death records.

Milton/Moulton Carter Founder Rose Hill Baptist, Assumption/Emanuel Baptist,Ascension

My ancestor, Rev Milton (Moulton/Moton/Morton/Monday) Carter, founded Emanuel Baptist Church near Barton outside of Donaldsonville (I've seen it referred to as "on Bayou Lafourche" but I am in California)and Rose Hill Baptist in Assumption (Milton Carter purchased the land), pastoring both from 1891 till the late 1930s. He was from Virginia, in Assumption in 1880, settled in Barton, Ascencion (which seems to be highway 943 now). In the History of Louisiana Negro Baptists...1804-1914 by William Hicks, it says that about 1900 the black Baptists in the area began a development of 12 small churches (and the Leland Academy as an auxiliary school to Leland university), so I am thinking these are two of them, or at least connected. I am trying to find his burial place, his wife Charlotte (Tucker) Carter (d. 1939), grandmother Charlotte Thomas (in Assumption 1880), sisters Fanny Novelluese (!?) Monroe Wallace (buried Barton somewhere) & Jane Narcisse, daughters Nancy Crayton/Crayten & Luverda/Louvirda/Luverta the mother of a Perkins Brown and who later married a Mr. Jackson. I am interested in history, gravestones, records, and tracing the Carter & Tucker famliies furthur back.

Ruth,

My grandmother lived at Woodlawn for a while after her mother died. Her mother was Effie Munson d.o. Alonzo and Alice Tete Munson. Alice was Elodie's sister that died. There is a little excerpt about Woodlawn at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~laassump/. This plantation supposedly had the first installation of natural gas in Louisiana and it had a courtyard in the middle of each wing to help with cooling. My grandmother said she loved the courtyards.

In doing some very extensive research I found out that a company named Mailhot & Hero had a sugar refinery company on Oakley plantation. I also have names of many families that were situated just below the Oakley Plantation.

I also have information on the Little Texas Plantation.
