Belizaire BREAUX

Hi Board....
I am looking for information on a child of Belizaire's names Ernest Leonard BREAUX born 1906 in Rayne. I know he is one of 13 chilren born to Belizaire and Marguerite Caruthers. I know that at some point in his childhood he lost a leg in a disagreement with a train, hence the nickname Peg (newspaper article??)....
I know that he isn't on the 1910 census. I also know he was killed in a car accident with his wife Thelma in 1956 in the Cheneyville area (Rapides Parish). Their son Robert and daughter Linda were raised in orphanages. Robert moved to Michigan in 1968 and met my Mom. He was killed in a car accident when I was 10 (1982).
Can anyone help me find more about this elusive Grandfather of mine?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
What kind of info are you looking for? is it the newspaper article of his train accident? I'm in Crowley and Rayne is next door.......
At our library here in Crowley we have a Genealogy room. I can try to do a lookup for you. I can go to Rayne if I need to. Just let me know what kind of info you are looking for.

Hi Mary, thanks for the reply. It would be great if you could look for a newspaper article for me. The biggest problem is that I don't know the date of the incident. I know he was born in Rayne in 1906, and he was on the 1910 Rayne census (looks as though they called him Louis in that one) but he is no longer there in 1920. His father is Belizaire Breaux and his mother is Olivia Creduer. Hopefully the extra info will help with the search. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for your time. You can email me directly at swolfy@charter.net to make things easier.

I'll see what I can find. Do you know how old he might have been when he lost his leg? If I could at least have a year to go with it would help. If not it will take some time (days) And am I looking for a Ernest Leonard Breaux or Louis Breaux? well,
Louis may be short for Leonard.

Hi Mary,
Sorry it took so long to reply. I haven't been able to find out what year, or how old he was, when he lost his leg. It's kind of a stumper. If I had to guess I'd say between 1916 and 1926. The worst part is that I can't even confirm where he lived during this period. His mother passed away in 1915 and all the kids were sent to live elsewhere. His father (Belizaire) is alone on the 1920 census. I would also love to look up an obit on Leonard's mother (Marguerite Olivia Caruthers or Creduer). Being all the way in Michigan, it is impossible to do this research myself, so I'll take anything I can get!
Thanks again for your time and effort.

Thanks, Eagle.
The people I mention in this posting are descendents of Pierre-Firmin Breaux, who was exiled from Acadia in 1755, and went on to settle at Breaux Bridge (he built the first bridge there). Belizaire is my gr-grandfather and Leonard is my grandfather, born 1906. I am trying to determine when he lost his leg in a train accident.
Thanks again for your suggestion.

There is a movie about your ancestor titled "Belizaire, The Cajun". It might help! I know that you can rent it from NetFlix. You can also buy it from Amazon.com. All Acadians migrated from France to Canada and then to the US.

And I thought I had heard it all! I am stunned that I have done so much research on my family and have never heard of this movie.
I must ask the question, however, is this really based on my great-grandfather's life? How did you learn of this? I mean, it's the same first name.... I just wonder if you can give me more information regarding your knowledge of this.
Thank you so much for the info. A Cajun story in general would give me insight into the lives and struggles my ancestors went through. Maybe someday there will be a movie about le grand derangement!

I am trying to locate info on a Bridget Breaux who married an Humble. (According to an article her name was Breaux tho other researchers says no. I think it was in Father Hebert's books that I got the name.

Do you know anything of this person? They had a son name John Humble from Natchez who died in Opel Parish1847 and he married Elizabeth Greenwell/Grindel (1800) from KY so his parents had to have been born in the late 1700's.

Thanks in advance for any info
