Amy Dunn transcribed and contributed this article. A scanned copy of the image is attached but it is very small and hard to read so Amy has transcribed it for us from the original.

This article appears on the front page of the Owensboro Daily Messenger for the morning edition of May 17, 1903 midway down the middle section. The title is "Pathetic Killing: Mrs. Winstead shoots young boy at Sebree" with subtitle as " "Robert Ashby intended to pay a visit to the Winstead home with his mother." The following is what follows:

"Sebree, KY., May 16 - Robert Ashby, an eleven-year-old boy, was shot and instantly killed at 8 o'clock tonight by Mrs. Winstead.

"The details of the shooting are pathetic. Mr. and Mrs. John Ashby, the parents of the dead child, came here a few days ago from Henderson. Mr. Ashby is a contractor. They rented a house near the Winsteads.

"Mrs. Ashby and her son started over to see Mrs. Winstead tonight. The young fellow ran on ahead of his mother laughing and talking. He was many yards in advance of her when the house was reached. He ran up to the front of the residence and knocked loudly on the door. Mrs. Winstead asked who was there. The boy made her some reply in a gruff voice. She threw the door open and the boy rushed up the steps . Before he had crossed the threshold a shot rang out and he fell almost in his mother's arms. The load of shot from the gun had passed entirely through his chest. He died in his mother's arms.

"Mrs. Winstead's husband was at the lodge and it is thought she had been reading the papers of the McLean county killing a few nights ago, and wanted to prove herself equal to the occasion."
