My Great Grandmother Matilda Sally "Tillie" Grimes (married first to Lewis Simmons of Hardin County, IL) and her 2nd husband Grant Little from Union County listed himself as Widowed even though she was still alive till 1953. I have a copy of her death certificate and Grant Little's obit confirm this. Why would he list himself as Widowed? He had a housekeeper there that appeared to have been there since 1935. Would this mean he took up with another woman and this was the way around him not getting divorced? I guess I need to track her down on the 1940 Census...so far she isn't showing up in Union County.
