I hope I'm not sending this twice! What I typed disappeared. I myself have traced the Brining family tree to Germany. I can't remember if his name was Jacob or John and Hanna Brining. I was just in Le Roy, IL today and found a lot of information at the library. My email is tvland_channel@yahoo.com.

I have discovered that James Gray was born in Kentucky and not in Virginia. I am still trying to find his parents. There is a John Sanford Gray from Nelson County, KY that had a son named James born in 1823. This possibly could be the one I am looking for because his mother's name was Elizabeth Figg Gray and James' wife was named Mary Figg Hite--so possibly a cousin down the line somewhere?

I'm searching for Stone, Roberts & Beauchamp families from Taylorsville - Spencer, Co KY. I would not be surprised if we are related somewhere along the line (black or white). It was such a small place. I will be happy to assist you if I can. In the 1870 Census for Taylorsville, Spencer, Kentucky this is the way that they are listed. A lot more different than the previous 10 years.

1. William, 44
2. Ann,28 (wow, wow, wow) LOL!
3. Zachariah, 6
4. John, 5
5. Thomas, 4
6. Richard, 2
7. Mary, 4/12 (I'm assuming 4 mos old)

In the 1870 it looks like he was a farmer/laborer w/an estate valued at $400. The census also shows 2 (?) other Stone families that live on the same street/neighbor that are white as well. But,there is a 60 yo Black female w/the last name Stone that lived on that street as well . . . I'm sure she is related to me in some way. She is listed w/o occupation, but certain that she was a domestic servant/slave to individuals that lived on that street. Your thoughts?

Although my ancestry is Black, I tend to believe that at some point many of the trees branched over to the Caucasian side as well. I mean, Spencer Co is so small, anyone named Stone had to be related or owned by the Stone family (not trying to be mean) just trying to trace the roots.
It is very possible that the Gray family lived in Spencer County--I had never thought much about it--just assumed that they were from Shelby County. The two counties are right next to each other and Mt. Eden (where the Hite's lived) is very near the Spencer/Shelby County line.

I am looking for the father of James Gray, who was born around 1826 in Virginia (according to his marriage license). In 1847 he married Mary Figg Hite in Shelby Co. KY. They had 3 children-Winfield Scott Gray, born November 1849, William, born Sept. 1854 and Ida B. Gray born about 1856. I have located Mary Hite Gray in 1860 in Daviess Co. KY. living with her parents. She married William Wootton in 1862. James Gray must have died between 1856 and 1860. On Winfield's death cert., it says that his father James was born in KY, so I'm not sure which is right.

Hi Bruce,
I have more detailed information on Susan Ann Drake and her ancestry.
Her father, William Emory Drake was married 3 times and had 9 children. My son-in-law is descended from his oldest son, Stephen Hickman Drake.
William's parents were Benjamin A. Drake 1785-1864 and Mary "Polly" Riley 1790-1848
Benjamin's parents were John Drake 1750-1825
and Rebecca Heady 1757-?
John Drake is connected by DNA to the Drakes of Isle of Wight co, VA beginning with Richard Drake b abt 1615 in England, HOWEVER, there is no paper trail to this area of Virginia. Instead, he is most likely descended from another Richard Drake b 1630 who arrived in the Northern Neck of VA abt 1661. Both Richards came from the same area of England and the DNA connection probably goes back to England as well.
Please contact me for more details.
Art Baum

OBIT Rev Thomas H. Gordon 1920-2009

NOTE: I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS INDIVIDUAL. JUST POSTING THE OBITUARY ON THOMAS GORDON FROM THE DAYTON (OH) DAILY NEWS 5/10/09

The Rev. Thomas H. Gordon, Th.D. age 89, died May 8, 2009 at Hospice of Dayton. Widely known in Dayton, OH as the founding pastor of the First Baptist Church of Kettering and leader in Christianity, Bro. Gordon was survived by five children: three sons, Steve, Bill (Dena) and Roger (Christie), two daughters, Regina (Bob) Bennett and Susan (Ron) Jackson, his "boy" Josh, grandchildren, Bill and Sarah Bennett, Rebekah and Seth Jackson, Paul and Chris Hunt and numerous other relatives. He also is survived by one sister, Betty Wood Trent, of Louisville, KY. His wife Mary preceded him in death 10 years ago. His oldest son, Tommy, age 18 months, died in 1945. He was preceded in death by eight brothers, Bill, Purdom, Ray, Alvin, John, Dave, Dotson and Leon, and three sisters, Ruby, Mary and Gladys. Born February 13, 1920, in Nelson County, KY, Bro. Gordon was the son of the late Josh and Laura Gordon. He was the only one in his family to finish high school and college. He graduated from Campbellsville College and Baptist Bible Seminary in Binghamton, NY. Called to preach in 1946 and ordained as a pastor in 1949, Bro. Gordon served Little Union Baptist Church in Spencer County, KY and First Baptist Church of Liberty, KY, before founding First Baptist Church of Kettering (FBK) with the motto "in the heart of Kettering with Kettering at heart." He baptized 48 people in the creek during his first baptismal service and ended up with pneumonia, setting the precedent for a lifetime of fruitful, sacrificial ministry. Under his leadership, the church grew to a membership of 1,500 people, completed four building programs and sponsored three mission plants, which later organized into churches. An area religious broadcaster for more than two decades, Bro. Gordon also hosted a Sunday morning call-in radio show and broadcast church worship services. His fire-and-brimstone, pew-walking sermons, late-night visits until 1 or 2 a.m. and penchant for forgetting his wife at the grocery store while he witnessed to people became legendary in FBK history. Yet the congregation's affection for him and his for them remained the basis of his ministry. "I love my people, and they love me," Bro. Gordon would often say. He never stayed angry long, and he forgave easily. A humble, unpretentious man, he laughed often and would cooperate with any plan dreamed up by the church or youth group to promote the gospel. Bro. Gordon spent 26 years at the helm, of FBK before retiring under the mantle of Pastor Emeritus at age 62. He continued to serve many churches as interim pastor and preached many revivals following his retirement. An avid fisher of men, his passion was to preach the gospel and reach the lost. He characterized his greatest call to ministry, however, as caring for his ailing wife during the last seven years of her life. His children identify his greatest legacies to them as a fun-filled pastor's home characterized by laughter, water fights and wrestling matches, acceptance and understanding of the need to love unconditionally. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Charity Baptist Church (formerly First Baptist Church of Kettering, 1600 Brownleigh Road) May 12, 2009. Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with the Celebration of Life Service to follow. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Dayton and First Baptist Church of Kettering building fund, 3939 Swigart Road. The family extends gratitude to Dr. Ljungren for his tender loving care and special thanks to Hospice of Dayton. Because "keep on keeping on" was his motto, Bro. Gordon led thousands to the Lord during his life, including someone on his front porch just a few weeks ago. His favorite verses were John 3:16 and Psalm 126:6: "He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bring his sheaves with him." Without doubt, Bro. Gordon experienced a joyous homecoming with friends and family in heaven. Arrangements entrusted to the SWART FUNERAL HOME, West Carrollton, OH.

Thanks so much for your kindness in trying to assist me. The reason that I'm looking for tax and probate records is because I'm looking for information about a "Jacob and Hannah Brining" that lived in Spencer county at the time of the 1830 census. He was 70-80yrs and she was 60-70yrs. I could not find them in the 1840 census so I'm attempting to find out when and where they died in Spencer county. If there is a will and if it names more of their children than I have available at the time of the 1850 census. Like the couple that you found, the one I'm looking for was also from Wurtemburg, Germany but they migrated here in about 1805.
Apparently no one seems to know where the Spencer county records are kept. Maybe there are none anymore.

Hey Bart,

I have not done any research myself on any churches, but I do know the Shelby County Library in Shelbyville has several books on some individual churches and their histories. I cannot tell you how many of them might have been Baptist. They even have some stuff on the adjoining counties.

Shelby County Library
http://www.youseemore.com/Shelby/default.asp

They don't have anything online, but you can call or email, hopefully, somebody can tell you which books they might possess regarding the Baptist Churches.

Donnie

I am by no means an expert on Kentucky church history, but I will share something I have learned. My 3rd great grandfather, a longtime resident of Spencer County, was a member of the Dunkers church, Church of the Brethren. During the early history of these churches there seems to be a lack of official documentation on them and their members. However, I have found that when they changed from one denomination to another, sometimes older customs went with the new church. While the lines of denominations are blurred, it is not necessarily reflected in the official early church histories. For example, “Love Feasts” and “Washing of Feet” were a Brethren custom which transferred to some Baptist churches. I found it important to look at the other members names and the churches they came from to see the undocumented history of early Kentucky churches.
Hello Steve,
I have no information about the MASSIEs and the Little Mount Baptist Church. My notes list Israel MASSIE's parents as Thomas MASSIE and Nancy HILL. My connection to this family is via Israel's wife, Sally DARNABY.
Regards,

Terry Cheek

Hello Steve,
I have not seen the abstracts mentioned in your reply. I only have a copy of Edward Darnaby's original will and a memorandum. There is also a codicil regarding the liberation of his servant, Cambridge.
Please feel free to contact me via email. tcheek@wildblue.net.
Best regards,

Terry Cheek

I would like to exchange information with anyone on this family line who currently lives in Spencer County. The family farm was located in Wakefield on Martin Lane off of Highway 55 and later was owned by the Shouse Family. Andrew and his wife Sally Houghland Rodgers are buried there. Does anyone know if the headstones on these graves are still visible?
