Smiley, town or place near Wakefield, Spencer Co.,Ky

While looking up info on Quantrill's capture, I find repeated references to Wakefield's farm being near Smiley, Ky. Could this be an old name for Wakefield, or was there a town/ village near Wakefield which has since dissappeared? I know this happens, because there are at least three "towns" on the 1882 atlas of my former home county which no longer exist at all. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

SmileyTown was a Post Office Precinct in Spencer Co.Ky. It was Near wakefield Station in Spencer Co. I have pages from an old Atlas which shows a Robt. Wakefield family and a J.H.wakefield family also a M.Wakefield family living in this area. I hope this helps. I believe I got the maps from the 1880 Atlas but i'm not sure

This should be the place. After a drive out there, it is almost a mile from Wakefield. There are now four roads which meet near an old building which was a store (poss. the post office also). These are Hiways 55, 458, 1066, and a gravel lane called Oak Road. Also, the railroad crossed Hiway 55 near this spot. Oak Road runs in the general direction of Samuels (Samuel's Depot?) in Nelson Co., where aproximately 16 of Quantrill's men surrendered after the Wakefield fight. Thanks much for your input. If you find the map pages, see if this diescription any where near matches.

Hello. I knoe that this is a year after your post, but is Wakefield in Spencer co? I have some kin there now, in Spencer co., but am researching ancestors that show up there in a census. I am also looking for Richland Ky, have you heard of that being in the general area? Thanks, Jamie

Just saw your post. Could you tell me where you found the 1880 Atlas. All of the Wakefields mention are relatives.

The Filson Club in Louisville.Kentucky has a set of county atlas's. If you are not able to go there they might copy your county for a fee. I hope this helps.

Here is a current map showing the general area between Wakefield, KY and the Spencer County line. I have marked the location of the Smileytown P.O. with a pin. This is based on the location shown in the 1882 Atlas of Spencer County, Kentucky.
Best Regards,

I own a farm in Wakefield, Kentucky that James H. Wakefield once owned. Do you or any of your family members have any photographs of the area from the 1800s up to the 1950s? Thank you in advance

John
