Lewis Doane's family in 1850 census

Hope this will help. I have a Lewis Doane of Pendleton Co. Ky who mar. on 3 Aug 1842 to Milley H. Angell Pettit (my ggg grandmother). She was the widow of James Pettit (d.ca 1828) and the only child of William Angell. In the 1850 Ky Census, Milley & Lewis are both age 45. Children in the household are _issy (age 17), Lynarc (?) age 16, Richard Doan, age 12, & Mary age 6. This were probably children from his first marriage, as Milley's children from her first marriage were all adults by 1850. Lewis & Milley went to Mo.(Scotland Co.) in 1852 with the rest of her family. The only child of Milley's who didn't go to Mo. was Wm.Angell Pettit & his wife Elizabeth Highfill & children. Both Lewis & Milley died in Mo. about 1872-3. (See the Barton papaers). If this is the right family, we can exchange more information. (I am a descendant of Milley's dau. Lucy & her husband William Pusey of Ky. & Mo). Ever hear of them? Thanks.

Jack,

You are probably right about Mary being the child of Lewis Doane and Milley Angell Pettit Doane. But the only children listed for Milley in her father's will (William Angell) does not include a "Mary". I wonder if she died before the will was written? Do you know any more about her or what happened to the other Doan children after the move to Missouri?

Here are Milley's children as from Angell's will which was probated in Pendleton Co. on Feb.4, 1867:
Wm.A.Pettit, J.J. Pettit, John M. Pettit, George K. Pettit, Sarah Highfield, Nancy Hamilton, and Lucy Puzee. (I have the spouses in other information if requested by someone).

In the Pendleton Co. marriages, listed at this web-site, is the marriage of Lewis Doan to Mary Asberry (father is Coleman Asberry) on 25 Aug 1830. Is this the same "Lewis Doan" who later mar. Milley? Thanks.

Lewis Doane and Milly Angell Pettit were married on 03 Aug 1842 in Pendleton County, Kentucky. The fourth child in the 1850 census, Mary, b:1843-1844, is probably Milly's & Lewis' dau.

I have found only one Lewis Doan(e) in the area (Campbell, Pendleton & Harrison Counties) in the years 1800-1850. So, I think that Lewis married both Mary Asberry and Milly Angell Pettit. I am still concentrating my research efforts in northern Kentucky. I have not yet attempted to locate any of the Doanes in Missouri.

I'm not sure that this is the right Pettit family for you, but here is what I found in my files of Pettits the right age to be the parents of your Walter and James.
Marriages of
-John M.(McCargo) Pettit age 24, Pend.Co. on July 4, 1877 to India Wagner by Wm. Kirkwood at J.P. Wagner's. Her father was John Wagner.
- Z.T. Pettit, Sept. 28, 1870, to Rhoda A. Kirkwood, dau. of Wm. Kirwood, by AAA. Knight, at bride's father's.
- Z.T. Pettit, age 38, Pend.Co. to Parmelia Beagle, 42. (His 2nd mar., her 1st) by License, Sept 12, 1885.

John McCargo and Z. T. Pettit are sons of William Angell Pettit and his wife Elizabeth Highfill Pettit. William Angell Pettit is the son of James and Milley H. Angell Pettit, but was raised by his grandfather William Angell, the "old constable." William Angell Pettit died 22 Oct. 1866; his grandfather William Angell died 5 Jan 1867, Pendleton Co. Both lived near Morgan. Milley Pettit mar. Lewis Doane, then they and her other married children all went to Scotland Co. Mo. in 1852. (Including her daughter Lucy Pettit and husband William Pusey, my ancestors).

I have a copy of the obituary for John McCargo Pettit. He was 88 years old when he died at the home of his daughter, Lizzie near Wallingford on July 31, 1940. He was born on June 26, 1852, and was a lifelong member of the Morgan Christian Church. He married Enda Wagner in 1867*, and they had 6 children, two sons and four daughters. Only the four living children are listed: Walter Pettit of Tollesboro, Mrs. Lizzie Prater of Wallingford, Mrs. Myrtle Vansickle of Rushville, Ind, and John Pettit of Indianapolis, and 20 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren. He was buried at the Tollesboro Cemetery beside his wife. [unfortunately a James Lott is not listed.ljm]
(*this date could be a typo in the obit from the newspaper.)

This information comes primarily from the Barton papers in the Pendleton Co. Library at Falmouth. John McCargo Pettit was very helpful in giving information to Mr. Barton for the collection.

There are many other Pettit families in Pendleton Co. that are related to James Pettit. He died fairly young in 1828, and most of his children later went to Mo., but his brothers stayed in the area. His parents were Amos & Milley Glinn/Glenn Pettit.

Let me know if this is the right family. If so, I have more information for you. If not, I can watch for your names as I search my other families.
Good Luck. Linda

My grandfather was Plumis Nicholas Moore; his father was John Henry Moore possibly of Morgantown, KY, and his mother was Hetty Pettit (I have seen it spelled Peddit); John and Hetty had about 11 children, including my grandfather and two daughters Mattie Moore and possibly Gladys Moore who were married to two of the Dance brothers, Walter and possibly Charles Dance. I have no information on Hetty Pettit, apparently she was born in Gum Lick, KY, about 1849; John and Hetty may have lived in Williamston, KY in the 1920's.
