Benjamin Medcalf/Metcalf (1788/89 to 1857/58)

I have recently found the baptismal record for my great-great-grandmother, Martha Ann Medcalf. There was much mystery around the identity of her parents. I had never seen anyone list her parents before, but knew that she was born in Green Co, KY. She was baptized at Holy Name of Mary in Marion Co, KY. Her parents were Benjamin Metcalf and Catherine Carroll. Her sponsor was Rebecca Carroll (who was either Rebecca's mother or grandmother).

Now I am looking for more info on Benjamin Metcalf. There are two Benjamin Metcalfs that are listed in the death records of Grayson County which is where she came from when she married my gggrandpa. These two Benjamins were born a year apart and died 10 months apart. One lists his father as Joseph Metcalf. The other one says parents are unknown. The Benjamin who has a parent listed has the birthplace as unknown. The one who doesn't has Nelson Co. as the birthplace.

That was confusing.

I really do not know much about the Metcalfs. Can any of you help?

Looking for information on the Marshall families at Chaplin, Nelson County, Kentucky, c. 1850-1880. Specifically any information about Dr. Frank Marshall and his wife, Susan (anyone know her middle/maiden name?), and his relationship to Thomas Marshall, who was a local grocer, merchant, and hotelkeeper. Do their homes or the hotel still exist?

I am the great, great granddaughter of Kate Cox Martin, daughter of Isaac Shelby Cox and Sarah Ann Tutt (William, Thomas, Reuben/William, William, Richard). I'm trying to prove Thomas Tutt's (1762-1804) parentage. I understand that most agree that his father was Reuben who married Sarah Covington, and that there is an US and International Marriage Record showing their marriage, but I have a recorded (albeit transcribed) deed that states that Sarah Covington was married to William Tutt. If anyone can give me a source showing exactly who Thomas's parents were, I would be most appreciative.

They are my ancestors. Eliza NOTTINGHAM'S marriage affidavit shows her mother's name as Elender NOTTINGHAM.

Jesse Stamper

Re: Beech Grove Methodist Church

The Kentucky Medical Journal of July 1937 has an article by Mrs. Joseph McCormack (not McCormick) relating the story of her (deceased) husband, who was the longtime secretary of the Kentucky State Board of Health. She says the Beech Grove Methodist church was erected by her father-in-law, Thomas McCormack (on his farm land, and John T Gaddie. Thomas McCormack also owned a general store on the property. He later moved to Kansas and Dr. and Mrs. Joseph McCormack moved to Bowling Green. I don't have an exact date, but it would have been before 1872. I am writing a biography of Josephn McCormack and would appreciate any information you find about the McCormack family in Nelson or Warren County.

OBIT Rev Thomas H. Gordon 1920-2009

NOTE: I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS INDIVIDUAL. JUST POSTING THE OBITUARY ON THOMAS GORDON FROM THE DAYTON (OH) DAILY NEWS 5/10/09

The Rev. Thomas H. Gordon, Th.D. age 89, died May 8, 2009 at Hospice of Dayton. Widely known in Dayton, OH as the founding pastor of the First Baptist Church of Kettering and leader in Christianity, Bro. Gordon was survived by five children: three sons, Steve, Bill (Dena) and Roger (Christie), two daughters, Regina (Bob) Bennett and Susan (Ron) Jackson, his "boy" Josh, grandchildren, Bill and Sarah Bennett, Rebekah and Seth Jackson, Paul and Chris Hunt and numerous other relatives. He also is survived by one sister, Betty Wood Trent, of Louisville, KY. His wife Mary preceded him in death 10 years ago. His oldest son, Tommy, age 18 months, died in 1945. He was preceded in death by eight brothers, Bill, Purdom, Ray, Alvin, John, Dave, Dotson and Leon, and three sisters, Ruby, Mary and Gladys. Born February 13, 1920, in Nelson County, KY, Bro. Gordon was the son of the late Josh and Laura Gordon. He was the only one in his family to finish high school and college. He graduated from Campbellsville College and Baptist Bible Seminary in Binghamton, NY. Called to preach in 1946 and ordained as a pastor in 1949, Bro. Gordon served Little Union Baptist Church in Spencer County, KY and First Baptist Church of Liberty, KY, before founding First Baptist Church of Kettering (FBK) with the motto "in the heart of Kettering with Kettering at heart." He baptized 48 people in the creek during his first baptismal service and ended up with pneumonia, setting the precedent for a lifetime of fruitful, sacrificial ministry. Under his leadership, the church grew to a membership of 1,500 people, completed four building programs and sponsored three mission plants, which later organized into churches. An area religious broadcaster for more than two decades, Bro. Gordon also hosted a Sunday morning call-in radio show and broadcast church worship services. His fire-and-brimstone, pew-walking sermons, late-night visits until 1 or 2 a.m. and penchant for forgetting his wife at the grocery store while he witnessed to people became legendary in FBK history. Yet the congregation's affection for him and his for them remained the basis of his ministry. "I love my people, and they love me," Bro. Gordon would often say. He never stayed angry long, and he forgave easily. A humble, unpretentious man, he laughed often and would cooperate with any plan dreamed up by the church or youth group to promote the gospel. Bro. Gordon spent 26 years at the helm, of FBK before retiring under the mantle of Pastor Emeritus at age 62. He continued to serve many churches as interim pastor and preached many revivals following his retirement. An avid fisher of men, his passion was to preach the gospel and reach the lost. He characterized his greatest call to ministry, however, as caring for his ailing wife during the last seven years of her life. His children identify his greatest legacies to them as a fun-filled pastor's home characterized by laughter, water fights and wrestling matches, acceptance and understanding of the need to love unconditionally. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Charity Baptist Church (formerly First Baptist Church of Kettering, 1600 Brownleigh Road) May 12, 2009. Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with the Celebration of Life Service to follow. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Dayton and First Baptist Church of Kettering building fund, 3939 Swigart Road. The family extends gratitude to Dr. Ljungren for his tender loving care and special thanks to Hospice of Dayton. Because "keep on keeping on" was his motto, Bro. Gordon led thousands to the Lord during his life, including someone on his front porch just a few weeks ago. His favorite verses were John 3:16 and Psalm 126:6: "He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bring his sheaves with him." Without doubt, Bro. Gordon experienced a joyous homecoming with friends and family in heaven. Arrangements entrusted to the SWART FUNERAL HOME, West Carrollton, OH.

Davidson and Holmes connection?

I'm tracking a line of DAVIDSON & HOLMES that marry. I've been in touch with a researcher of the Holmes line and while most of these lines move on to Bullitt Co. there is one birth he has in Nelson County:

Lucinda Holmes b. c1816 m. Troutman, Tolbert

Later on in 1838 her sister, Eliza R. Holmes marries #1 William JACOBS and then 1850 to #2 John DAVIDSON

I'm trying to narrow down the few DAVISON/DAVIDSON's out of Bullitt Co., KY ...there is a Marshall Davison (Nelson Co. m. 1833 Mary Aud Avis) ... I believe his father is Reuben. I'm looking to track further Davisons so if any of these names click, please get back to me. sandymento@comcast.net

Annie A. Jones Watts, wife of John Watts

Annie A. Watts, nee Jones, died at Samuels, Nelson County, Kentucky on 4 Oct 1920. She was buried at New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. Her huband, John Watts, was the informant on her death certificate and listed her birth year as 1881. John gave her parents as Huston Jones and Mattie Pendergrass, both of whom were born in Deatsville, Kentucky. However, the Huston Jones who married Mattie Pendergraft was born in 1871 and he and Mattie married about 1892.

John and Annie are in the 1 Jun 1900 Nelson County census. They had been married 10 months. He was listed as born in Jan 1876 and she in Dec 1880. I did not find the family in the 1920 census, but I believe the John L. Watts in Nelson County in 1910, married to an Anna for 10 years, with five children, is the same family.

I'm trying to confirm Annie's parents. I suspect that she was a child of Samuel Huston Jones (1841-1928) and Eliza C. Jenkins Jones (1845-1925).

Anyone have this Watts family in their data?

I believe he may be the son of John Drake and Rebecca Heady born in 1786 who married Sally Stump in 1810 in Nelson co, KY. I'm trying to track down descendant to join the Drake DNA Surname project.

William Thralls:
It has been a long time since last corresponded with you about "old William Wilcocks". I have been able to trace his son Ezra to Indiana about 1825; he died there about 1827 according to his probate records.
Ezra and Sarah Friend Wilcocks/Willcox/wilcox had 6 sons; according to the probate (very sketchy records - realy just bits and pieces)- no mention of wife Sarah althought the 1820 Census of Hardinn Co., KY enumerates a 15-20 year female.
The most interesting piece of evidence is a S.A.R. Application #23911 by Thomas Francis Keleher. It gives Ezra's birth date as 1773 and 2 of Ezra's sons said on the 1880 Census that their father (Ezra) was born in New Jersey and their mother (Sarah Friend) was born in PA. My copy of the S.A. R. application has a deposition attached which was narrated by Amanda (Wilcox) Tansey (William's great grandaughter)
It is also interesting to note that Phoebe's Dower Surveys were made 20 & 27 September 1802 - Dower surveys were usually made after husband's death - so I think we can saftely say William died before Sept 1802.
I am sure you have corresponded with Wanda L. (Wilcox) McKay and am sorry to inform you that she passed away 8 May 2009.
Ray Barnes of Kansas has located a "Barnes Family Bible" which gives us a birthdate for Rachel.
wilcox494@cox.net

The "Biographical Encyclopedia of Kentuckky of the Dead and Living Men of the 19th Century" states that Rev. Archiballd Cameron was born in the Highlands of Scotland ca 1770, and was brought by his parents, John and Janet (McDonald) Cameron to America (Pennsylvania) when very young. settled in Nelson Co., KY near Bardstown in 1781. Collins, "History of Kentucky," states that Archibald was the youngest of 6 sons. Angus was one of them.

I believe that Robert, who died there ca 1805, was another but haven't found proof. Does anyone know the sons in this family?

Yes, indeed. I have tried to find out where the Mill Creek Cemetery is and I have been told that it is 3 miles East of Bardstown.
My Weller family it buried there: I am especially interested in the following that are buried in this cemetery:
1	Catherine Salome Ambrose/Weller
2	Daniel P. Weller s/o Johannes & Catherine
3	Anna Margaret Firor/Weller wife of Daniel P.Weller
4	George S. Weller s/o Daniel P. & Anna Margaret
5	Judith Hubbard/Weller wife of George S.
6	Polly (Mary) Ann Weller/Crume s/o of George S. w/o John M. Crume
7	John M. Crume h/o Polly Ann Weller
8	Possible George A. Crume s/o Polly & John
9	Possible Squire Crume s/o Polly & John
Or any Weller buried in this cemetery.
If you do find out where this is and if you find any information about any of the above it will be much appreciate. I do have a lot of history but I am mainly interested in where my ancestors are buried and hope to have some pictures of their gravestones, if possible.

Also there is a Lutheran Cemetery in or near Bardstown and I am interested in the following"
Conrad Mathais & Maria Mathis his wife. She was Maria Weller and daughter of Catherine Salome Ambrose/Weller.
Conrad's name I believe is spelled Conrod.
Also Conrad & Maria' son Conrod is buried at the Lutheran Cemetery.

I am interested in obtain pictures if you or if anyone you know are going to these two cemeteries and I will bear the expense.
If not I appreciate learning about especially the Mill Creek Cemetery and knowing about it.

I appreciate your response to my message very much….Stay in touch
Regards.......JCI
Do you have copies of these?
"Peter Huffman, with his family of five children and wife, came to Monroe Township, Clark Co. IN in 1811. He had other children who were married and had homes of their own, one of whom was the wife of Mr. Henry Collins. They were both killed in the Pigeon Roost massacre. They settled on Silver Creek near Henryville, where he commenced a life of a pioneer in the woods. In the March of 1813, a group of Shawnee Indians possibly the same ones that were at Pigeon Roost, concealed themselves behind the bank of Silver Creek and shot Peter Huffman who at that moment came to his door to look for two of his grandsons who were playing in the barn below the house. With the same ball that Mr. Huffman was killed Mrs. Huffman was wounded in the breast, the ball lodging in the shoulder-blade. The old gentleman was killed instantly in what is known as the Huffman defeat. (I have this ball now). The Indians took one of the children into captivity and kept him for a number of years.

History of The Ohio Falls Cities and Their Counties
Vol. 2, 1882"

BIOGRAPHY of PETER HUFFMAN:

Mr. Peter Huffman, with his family of five children and wife came to Monroe township, Clark county, Indiana in 1811. He was born in 1819; was married in 1841, on the day of General Harrison's inauguration; to Miss Eliza McComb of Monroe township, born in 1823.

How are you related?
I really have almost nothing to share because I don't know much about my Huffman connections.

According to the information I have, the accuracy of which I cannot vouch for until you get to my great-grandparents, I am descended from Peter Huffman through:

Benjamin Huffman (1778-1860), wife's name Mary (1787-1860)

Jonathan Huffman (1805-1873), m. Eva Avery (1808-1848)

Harriette Huffman (1840-1892), m. G. W. D. Snider (1837-1921). These are my great-grandparents.

That's about all the information I have, so it would be pretty much a one-way street unless you want information for G.W.D. and Harriette Huffman Snider on down.
