How about a Marriage Date of Lilly Knight and John Henry Wilson DeArmond.? I think it should have been in about 1916 or 1917. Lilly DeArmond was the informant on her Mothers Death Certificate in 1917 Her Mother being Eliza Fuller Knight of Butler County and her Father was Dan B Knight who died in 1928. Lilly herself died in July of 1929 and JW DeArmond of Central City was the informant. This would close some years in the family questions about marriages and deaths.
I understand and I would help any one at all so let me know. Thanks

I found a George Hay married a Nancy Wilkins 9/15/08 in Muhlenberg Co. ky.
George comes up as George Hays in the 1810 census. There are two George Hays(Hayes) in Posey County IN. One is married to a Nancy, which I believe to be Nancy Campbell daughter of Ajax Campbell. Then there is our George Aiken Hayes(Hays) married to a Massa. The common thought is that they were married about 1808. Otherwise than that I don't know. I also saw two brothers Kinchen and Wiley S. They are sons of Kinnard. George is not mentioned. He may not be related to them. A lot of folks went to Posey Co IN from Muhlenberg Co.KY. Who are you looking for?

Is anyone researching Joseph Sire Jackson VICK (b. abt 1874), his first wife Eliza J. DUKES (b. abt. Jun 1875 in Muhlenberg Co.) or his second wife Sarah B. WILLIAMS (b. abt Oct 1890 in KY)? I would like to know the names of the parents of Joseph, Eliza, and Sarah.

Joseph and Eliza with their daughter Eather are on the 1900 U.S. Census of Todd Co., KY. He appears to be the Joseph who is the son of Benjamin B. VICK on the 1880 U.S. Census of Trigg Co., KY.

Eliza J. may be the Eliza (b. abt 1874) on the 1880 U.S. Census of Muhlenberg Co. and who was the daughter of John Y. DUKES (b. abt 1826 in KY).

Sarah B. may be the Belle WILLIAMS (b. Aug 1889 in KY) who is the daughter of John A. WILLIAMS (b. Jan 1851 in KY) on the 1900 U.S. Census of Muhlenberg Co.

It looks like Joseph could have moved from Trigg Co. to Todd Co. then to Muhlenberg Co. and finally to Hardin Co.

Regards,

Larry
Claudia,

I would love to see the picture. My e-mail address is jameslvick@yahoo.com.

Sometimes there is an element of truth in family stories, even if the stories are not 100 percent accurate. I mentioned the possibility of you testing because I thought since this is so important to your family you might want to test yourself to be absolutely sure Julia didn’t have Indian ancestry on her mother’s side, and European ancestry on her father’s or her mother’s father’s side (making her less than full bloodied). Because you are a woman you should have Julia's mitochondrial DNA (my mtDNA came from my mother). If Julia had a Native America female ancestor who had a child by a European ancestor, then the test I had might not pick that up (the confidence level fades after five generations or if there is admixture in the line). However, since mitochondrial DNA is passed down the female line and has no recombination with the male's DNA, your mtDNA would reveal if Julia had a matrilineal Native American ancestor. It is something to think about given the level of confidence in your family story.

Incidentally, we had a similar story about one of my VICK ancestors. Have a great night.

Regards,

Larry
Larry, Did I send you her picture? Have you seen her picture? She had dark eyes and hair. I am blond with blue eyes. My husband pointed out to me that we look very much alike. Same mouth, nose, cheekbones and eyes.

I am a tad confused. I thought your DNA test proved it was impossible for Julia to be full blooded Cherokee.

My mother is upset with me because I told her the story we grew up with is not true. She reminded me her mother only spoke the truth. My grandmother's mother was Ludie Oliver,a daughter of Julia. (second marriage) I just can't imagine with such a short generation line, this story was created out of thin air. The story even had the details of why the child was adopted. There was a cholera epidemic. The child's parents dies....the Sherrod were childless etc.

Is it possible if I had the DNA test, the story could possibly be proved to be true?

Regards cuz,
Claudia
Claudia,

You might consider testing your own DNA to verify that Julia wasn't a full bloodied Cherokee. Since you are a matrilineal descendant of Julia, you have her mitochondrial DNA (which has not been combined with any other person's in your line to her). If she was a full bloodied Cherokee you will have an Amerind haplogroup (a way of identifying all of the descendants of a matrilineal ancestor).

If testing is of interest to you, let me know. We could also compare DNA from all of our chromosomes and perhaps identify the blocks that you and I inherited from Julia. These comparisons can be made in a way that preserves our privacy. We are about to start using this type of test in our VICK surname project so both men (who aren't patrilineal descendants of our VICK ancestor) and women can participate. I believe we are going to be able to get a very substantial discount from current pricing for this type of testing making it in the same range as a mitochondrial only test.

Regards,

Larry
Thank you so much Larry.

I must say I am highly disappointed to hear this news. My grandmother knew her Grandfather, William Ledbeter Pace very well. Julia was his second wife. Julia died in 1850. Years before my Grandmother was born. I can't imagine where such a story came from.

"Linnie Davis" told me this story for years. In great detail. Very strange. I suppose the truth is in the pudding. Or shall we say, "the DNA results". Sob, I now have to tell my mother. Worse than that, we must admit my cousin is correct. :)

If you don't mind. Where do you live and how are we related?

I think I told you...I live in Lexington, KY. My maternal grandparents came from Christian County.

Thank you so much for the reply and the information.

Regards,
Claudia

Is it possible that Francis Wells b: abt 1705 is Francis Wilks whose inventory is recorded in Edgecombe Co., NC and written and dated 5/10/1745 by his wife Grace Wilks? Some book which was written by the Tarboro, NC Historical Society states that Francis died in the winter of 1744-1745. The book has not been located in Tarboro or at the Raleigh, NC Archives.

It's a large,in English language, there are no printing or copyright or publishing dates I can find and nothing is written inside. Obits, Baptisms, birth certificates and pictures were in between the pages. Some of the older pictures(I think) were the home around Nelson Creek Baptist Church because Lawrence(Lorenz) Yonts gave the land for the cemetery and the first person buried there is his mother, Mary Magdalena Spraker. The other pictures and papers are from Hendersn which makes me believe it may have been the Bible of Matthew Hamm Yonts since he moved there, my grandfather and his sisters were born there. I'm 66, everybody else has passed and I don't have a clue who the people are.

Please, please someone answer this. My Grandmother, Linnie Davis Vaughn, Granddaughter of Julia Sherrod... told me Julia was an orphan full blooded Cherrokee baby. The story goes Julia was adopted by James Jolly and Mary "Polly" Sherrod
because they could not have children. This is why there is not exact birth date on her death certificate.

I am dying to know if this is true.

Thanks,
Claudia

It was provided to me by his son, L H Harper. Most of the diary covers what transpired to him after the Armistice was signed, and his march into Germany and while he was statined there as an occupying force. It also includes parts of two letter written to his motehr. The first while statined in Germany after teh war was over, and the second was probably written while he was still in camp in Ohio.

Frank was a farmer and a coal miner. He served in Battery C, 322nd. Field Artillery
during World War I. He was in Belgium, France and Germany.
The following is a copy of Frank Luther Harper's diary from sometime after June 17,
1918 to May 16, 1919. It was copied from his orginal diary the way he wrote it as
much as possible:

Frank L. Harper War No. 2983185 Battery No. 258 Battery C.322.9 A. N. A. American
Expeditionary Forces.

Depree Laport France.
I will never forget my 24th. birthday dinner. We were in the middle of the
Atlantic and had Austialia jack rabbit for dinner. I did not take any on my
plate. The stuff looked like red cats boiled up.
We fired 11,052 shots at the Huns in all. Our Battery layed down a 10 min.
barrage working off over 900 Dutch. That was one time with many others we
put them over in the right time and right place. This was on the 26th of Oct.
We wint in to our 4th and hope our last poseation on the eavening of 10th
(Nov.) and were shelled quite a bit in the eavening and durning the night.
On the morning of the 11th we began fireing on the Huns at a 5 min. eneravle
and when I pulled the lavered on our 4th shot the Huns opened up on us with
ther 77s. The first shell stracking very close to the muzzle of our piece
and I shall never forget how close one of the srapnal passed by my head.
At this instent the comand came down to seas fireing and that would be signing
the "Armestest" at 11oclock and to get under cover. The Huns kept up ther
shell fire until about 10 and about 10:30 our No. 2 gun squad wint out.
Friday November 15, 1918
We had some drills this forenoon also a coady formation and all taking a
good hot bath this afternoon. This has been a beautifull day as a whole
and put in pretty good. Fired a few rounds being the last that was fired
in our sector. Thare was quite a No. of horses killed and six of our men
wounded but we hope not severley. Up until this date the 15th we have had
a splended time. Not doing much only policeing up and making ourselves
comfortable and etc. Yesterday we stood retreat the first time for many
days. I also remember geting a bowling out for not having my cap on right.
Saturday November 16, 1918
This is the first time I knew what day it was for quite a while. It has
been a fine day. We got quite a bunch of new horses this morn. and got our
harness in trim this afternoon and are now waiting to be issued emergancy
rashions. As we expect to be on the road to morrow. 323rd pulled out to day
and a bunch of us boys stole the march on them as we made one of ther Batterys
mess line and got a good meal and it was great that we did as our kitchen
only had sluns for dinner and it did not tast good. So I gave mine to a
French prisoner and missed a formation in the ______. ______ did not get
________ the ________ ________for it. So I don't feel bad over getting
in the 323rd mess line.
Sunday November 17, 1918
We left Eccurey this morning at 8 and started for the Rhine we suppose.
Seen quite a bit of pretty countary. He died on Dec 13 1938 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. He was buried in Gish Cemetery, Muhlenberg County, Bremen, Kentucky. Ivan Duane Tucker worked as a coal miner then moved to the town of Browder, about seven miles South of Central City where he lived until his death in December of 1938.
We don’t remember of seeing or hearing father playing a horn. It was perhaps in North Carolina where he played it or before he left Utah when he went to Mexico. Now when or how he learned carpenter work. Grandpa Tucker was a carpenter or a jack carpenter. Ivan Sr. built our home & grist mill in Old Mexico. We had a nice home there by the mill. He also built the big water wheel that run (ran) the mill. It was in the old mill race or canal. The water would fill the cups on the wheel & that would turn this big wheel. A pulley on the wheel shaft with a leather belt that ran the mill to other pulleys & shafts & ran the machinery in the mill.
Now when Ivan Sr. sold out the mill & they came to Utah, Ivan Sr. got cash or gold coins & carried them around his waist in a money belt. It was a combination pistol cartridge & money belt. And it was in the family for years. Ivan Jr. got the old pistol. Delbert is supposed to have it now, him or his son Bob. A 5 shot Iver Johnson pistol.
When they got to the states they moved in with Grandma Tucker & lived there the 1st winter. I & Bell went to school there in Cleveland. Ivan Sr. went to washboard flat & took up the homestead 160 acres, & bought 80 acres of school land. 40 acres he gave to the town of Elmo. He built the old log cabin that we lived in. When we came to ClevelandIvan Sr. built a house for Mrs. Christensen there in Cleveland. After we moved to Elmo & got our crops in dad got a job in Cleveland, Ivan Jr. believed it was the dance hall for Tom Davis (Ernie Davis) next to the school house.
He bought him a bicycle to ride to & from work 5 miles. And when you seen him coming home at night he was walking & leading his bicycle. He could out walk anybody I ever knew. When I was a kid at home I would have to run to keep up with him.
One summer Ivan Sr. leased the farm to Walter Clegg & went to Sunnyside to work, building houses there. Ivan Jr. asked him to go with him so he could learn carpenter work. Ivan jr. had to stay home & work on the farm.
Now the blacksmith he learned by doing & watching. And he was good at it. Before he got his shop there he had to go to Cleveland or Price whenever he had anything to fix. He perhaps learned some of it at home before he was married for they had a shop at the ranch in Cleveland.
Ivan Sr.was a trusting man, he thought everybody was as honest as he was. And he lost a lot of money that way. And he also wanted everything done right, if it was worth doing, it was worth doing right.
In the fields he wanted the furrows straight & the watering of the grain. After the first or second watering he could turn the water in & it would run the way he wanted it to. They had one of the best if not the best grain fields in the valley. We sold seed wheat & alfalfa seed to other farmers in the valley. Also dad loved his horses. And never abused them. It was said he took better care of his team of horses than he did of his family. He had a good warm, dry place for the stock.
And they lived in a log cabin. Although they always had a shelter over their heads & plenty to eat. Sometimes they could of perhaps ate more, but they never went without a meal. Viola Brown and Ivan Duane Tucker had the following children:

+50	i. When she diedthey had been together more than 52 years.

MORE INFORMATION FROM IVAN TUCKER
We don’t remember of seeing or hearing father playing a horn. It was perhaps in North Carolina
where he played it or before he left Utah when he went to Mexico. Now when or how he learned carpenter work. Grandpa Tucker was a carpenter or a jack carpenter. Ivan Sr. built their home & grist mill in Old Mexico.
Ivan & Bell went to school there in Cleveland. Ivan Sr. went to washboard flat & took up the homestead 160 acres, & bought 80 acres of school land.
And we lived in a log cabin. Although they always had a shelter over their heads & plenty to eat. Sometimes wthey could of perhaps ate more, but they never went without a meal.

...............................
Flight
As I sleep into the night,
My soul floats up and takes flight.

The night was crisp and clear.
The iridescent moon looks down on us
in an endless peer.

I've floated this Earth looking for
my love true.
Feeling alone in despair, I hang my head low,
for my whole being feels blue.

My soul drifts and drifts through the night,
but there is only one for me in sight.

She shines like a beacon, in such
a beautiful light.
Oh, please, angel, please, find your sight.

For your true love and soul mate,
lies only inches away.
If you could only meet me halfway,
we could dance under the moon
in its sweet twilight.
...................

our loved ones
who are watching over us
from Heaven...

In Loving Memory
To my beloved wife, and Mother of our Children,
Dorothy Marie (Orange) Tucker
Born: July 17, 1929 - Died: June 29, 1999
----------------------------------

Each night I seek you in my dreams
And silent tears slip out
My voice fails to scream
What my heart begs to shout
Wherever you are, my precious angel
We hope you can feel our love
And keep your eyes upon us ... from Heaven up above
...
Carl McElvain, was my mother's brother and my uncle. He was better known as Pete. Where the name came from I don't know. Louis was his father and Sarah Elizabeth or Bettie was his mother. Pete's son Carl Jr. died just a few years ago. There was a daughter Mary and I don't know her whereabouts. Two sons beside Carl Jr. are also dead. One of those sons was named Harold but called Buddy. I don't recall the other son's name. The mother of these children was Marge. The lady he married after Marge and their children I don't know. I hope this helps answer your questions. My question remains about Jesse McElvain, my great- grandfather.

Claudia,

Thanks for all of the information. It is very unlikely that Julia was a full-blooded Cherokee. I say that because I have had my DNA tested by a company named 23andMe (www.23andMe.com). The test looked at both my chromosomal and mitochondrial DNA. One of the things 23andMe tests for is Native American ancestry. The test is very reliable at detecting a full-bloodied Native American ancestor in any line within five generations. Julia is four generations from me since she was my great great grandmother. My results showed no Native American ancestry.

Regards,

Larry

Hello,

I do not have a lot on Lawrence's line. I think he was actually William Lorenzo "Lawrence" Yontz. I've been told that my great grandmother liked to have her name spelled with a "z," but probably other branches spell it differently.

Lawrence was married twice and I have six children for him by the first marriage and two by the second. You must descend from the Matthew H. Yontz who married Ella Covey "from Danville." According to my records Matthew was the s/o Jonathan Yontz and Abigail Sherrod. Jonathan was the first son and second child of of Lawrence.

As stated, this isn't my line so correct me if I'm wrong, please.

I have a copy of the Rowan County NC marriage record for William Younce to Elizabeth Aplen, 14 Feb 1813. This is one of the reasons I belive his name was also William. I'd be glad to share a copy of the mg rec if you don't have it. As you probably know there was a brother of Lawrence, named William (probably John William), who also married an Aplen (Catherine).

I'll try to go through my file and see what else I have. As stated, it's been a long time since I worked on the Yontz.

Dorann

Lastly, do you know anything about the old William Yontz Bible? It burned in 1967 in a house fire while in the possession of one of my Smith family. I have some very dark "photostatic" copies of some of the pages and a translation from German into English.

I'm Dorann O'Neal Lam and my email addresses are >ddoublam at aol dot com< but I prefer >dorann dot lam at gmail dot com<

Dorann
