I only have one Van Zandt in my files. Susan Isabelle VANZANDT b. 1826 in Ky was 2nd wife of William Henry DULANY. She ties into my HUME line, that ties into my TAYLOR line. I have connections in most Co.s in Ky. As well as Mercer. Just in case it helps.

Hi Mike, Hannah VanZandt and Robert Higgins married in about 1740...we think in NY. We have found records of baptisms of their children at the Reformed Dutch Church, Smithfield, Monroe Co, PA in 1744 thru 1750. Another son was baptised in the RDC in Walpack, Sussex, NJ in 1749. They moved with their family to the Shenandoah Valley in a area that later became Hardy Co, WV. Their sons, Peter and William, were some of the first to settle Mercer County, KY. Robert is thought to have died about 1800 in Mercer Co. We have a transcription of an obituary for Hannah in 1808 in Mercer Co. where she died at the age of 97+.
Have you found out any information about her ancestors? Are you related to the Robert Higgins line?

Robert Higgins had a land grant from Fairfax at Old Fields in Hardy Co., WV, Robert's log house in Moorefield, WV is still standing and preserved, and Peter left a will and died in Rockingham Co., VA I believe.

George,
Thank you!! I found a sale deed from a Major Cade to Garret VanMeter which mentioned the first owner/patentee was Robert Higgins. It was for 100 acres "below Patterson's Creek Mountain". I've also found deeds of sale from Robert to Peter Umstott. I knew these were in the general area of Fort Pleasant/Hampshire/Hardy County, WVa, but hadn't been able to pinpoint the location as Old Fields.

I'm also stunned to know that Robert's house is still standing!! My cousin, Tom Higgins, and I have been trying to figure out if Robert died in WV or if he moved to Mercer Co, KY with his wife. Based on other information, we assume he died in 1800+/-, but don't know the location.
This Robert, who married Hannah VanZandt, is the father of Ens. Peter Higgins, Brevet Major Robert Higgins, John Higgins, William Higgins, Eleanor/Elinor Higgins Williams, Elizabeth Higgins Chapline and Henry Higgins. Several of the sons were some of the first group into Mercer County are were signatories to the petition for statehood.

Do you have any other wonderful clues? Thanks again!!

Nancy

Dear Nancy,

I have been reading you queries and discovered the name Eleanor Higgins Williams.

I believe, but am not positive, this Eleanor (Ellie) Williams was married to my ancestral grandfather David Williams of Hampshire/Hardy WVA and Mercer County, KY.

She would have been his third wife.

His first was Sarah Denton. She died around or before 1790. They had several sons.

BY ANY CHANCE DO YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION REGARDING ANY OF THE SONS?

His second wife, Jane Jones and he had two daughters. All three preceeded him in death.

He then married Eleanor Higgins. He died in 1832. His Will named only the grandchildren of his daughter with Jane Jones Williams. Apparently he and Eleanor had no children.

I am curious about Mrs. Higgins Williams. Do you have any information about her? Was her husband David or could it have been another Williams.

I have read that an Eleanor Williams married a different member of the Williams family. So it is a little confusing.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Sandy

Hi Sandy,
Gosh, I don't have anything on Eleanor Higgins except that she was the youngest of Robert Higgins' & Hannah VanZandt's children and that she was baptised Nov 12, 1752 in the Reformed Dutch Church at Smithfield, Bucks Co Co, PA. There is a record that was found in Mercer Co about a lawsuit in Mercer Co Circuit Court in 1823 between David Williams and Eleanor's nephew, John Higgins son of William Higgins (Eleanor's brother). The only other things I know is that previous Higgins researchers say she and David Williams had no heirs. I don't know when she died. If David Williams died in 1832, Eleanor (if she were still living) would have been 80 years old +/-. And, if David Williams first wife died in 1790+/- and he then remarried and had 2 more children--Eleanor Higgins would have had to have been at least in her 40's when they married--which explains why no children.
Of course, that raises the question about what was Eleanor Higgins doing all those years....hmmm. And the further question of whether or not David Williams was her first husband.
I'm going to forward your query to Tom Higgins, the family expert. Maybe he has some more information.
Cheers,
Nancy

This is messed up, from what I have. I have Robert Higgins married to Hannah VanZandt, married in 1720 according to records from the Reformed Dutch Church in Smithfield, and having at least Robert, Peter and Hannah (maybe more) in the early 1720's. Their son, Robert, married a girl with last name Wright in 1742, and is the father of the children listed from 1744-50, namely John (1744), Robert (1747), William (1750), Eleanor (1752), Peter and Henry. Then I have this same Robert, marrying Mary Jolliffe in 1797 and having 3 more. He would have been ANCIENT by then, so I think Mary Jolliffe probably married Robert's son, Robert. This is all just so messed up - I think someone needs to straighten it all out.
