I’m not related to any member of this family.

This is your problem -

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++
William Hindall's Birth Place

I am attempting to find prove that William Hindall was born in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1800; his parents would have been John & Mary Hindall and he had nine siblings. William appears in an 1830 census for Brandenburg, Meade, Kentucky. He married Nancy Martin on Jan. 30, 1835; they had five children. William was remarried after the death of his first wife to Elizabeth Rucker in 1841, and they settled in Dewitt county Illinois until his death on April 13, 1868. Additionally, William began "traveling" in 1829 as a (circuit rider) preacher for the Methodist church continued in the ministry until his retirement.

King, Bunger, McGlassen

Following for your consideration:

Eliza Ann Bunger's second husband was Patrich Jasper King. Eliza Ann Bunger's first husband, William B. McGlasson was apparently killed in the service of the CSA during the Civil War. William B. McGlasson apparently enlisted in Company E, 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, under the command of Captain John Hutchinson in 1862.
The Second Kentucky Cavalry regiment was formed from the remnants of John Hunt Morgan’s cavalry squadron, "The Lexington Rifles" soon after the battle of Shiloh, in early 1862. Born in Alabama and raised in Kentucky, Morgan was a tall, glamorously attired cavalry officer with French imperial-styled whiskers and a love for quality Kentucky horses. Morgan received his early combat education under the notorious Champ Ferguson. He saw his first action in the ranks of Ferguson’s Cumberland Mountain guerrillas. He often rode as a scout along the Kentucky-Tennessee border. It was here, in the early war, that Morgan first came to know the tactics for which he and his men would become famous.

The 2nd Kentucky’s ranks included not only farmers, planters, and the “First Families” of Kentucky, but also a colorful cast of characters. They were noted for being as good at fighting dismounted as they were on horseback and were noted for their skill at house-to-house fighting, discipline under fire, and maintaining rearguard actions. John Hunt Morgan would always affectionately regard them as his "Regulars". Throughout 1862-63, Morgan’s cavalry conducted a series of bold, and sometimes-reckless raids through Tennessee and Kentucky that culminated in a final, daring raid across Indiana and Ohio. Since they operated in and around Meade County there were probably occasions for visits to Eliza Ann and the conception of Mary Jane McGlasson, their daughter who was born in 1863.

In 1862 Gen. Nathan Beford Forrest fought a skirmish with federal troops in Simpson County. In 1863 two trains on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad line through Simpson County were attacked by CSA forces. The residents were subjected to looting and destruction of property and some citizens were killed by guerrillas. Among the guerrillas was the notorious Marcellus Jerome Clarke (aka: Sue Mundy) who was a Simpson County native and eventually was captured in Meade County on the Cox farm.

The Ohio Raid of July 1863 began in Brandenburg and was the longest Confederate cavalry raid of the war, covering more than 1100 miles in about three and a half weeks. However, he and most of his troopers were surrounded and captured and Morgan was imprisoned in the Ohio State Penitentiary. Shortly thereafter, he and several accomplices tunneled out and escaped back to Dixie. It was the 2nd Kentucky, attached to General Nathan Bedford Forrest that fired the opening and closing shots at the battle of Chickamauga. Morgan was a superb cavalry officer and an expert leader. His raids had mixed results, but they disrupted the Federal operations in Kentucky and Tennessee, providing a much needed boost to the CSA. He was killed by hostile fire in a minor action in 1864. In preparation of an attack on Union forces at Knoxville, Tennessee, Morgan halted his command overnight in nearby Greenville. On September 4, 1864 he was surprised and murdered by vengeful enemy cavalry after surrendering.

W. B. McGlasson was apparently captured and imprisoned in the POW camp in Louisville at some time during the Morgan raids. J H Bloom and W B McGlasson were brought from Louisville to Franklin County and executed on the Franklin Square, 20 Aug 1864, in retaliation for some local citizens being shot in Simpson County, Kentucky.
I believe they were originally from Shelby County and some went into Perry County, IN. If anyone has any information they would like to share, please email me at jelsinger at charter.net. Thanks.
They are out of the same family. Elizabeth Jane Moore Chappell would be William Chappells first wife before he married Louise Jane Heister. we assumed that Jane is buried in the same cemetery as her sister Elizabeth Atkinson. I have no idea who the others are per say but am going to assume that they all belong to one of the boys of William Chappell Sr. down there b 1802. or could even be his I guess.

it would be good to have photos of them However, I believe that most of mine if they are buried in Ky at all are in Meade co. and jefferson co. Amber Chappell told his kids that after they came back from MO in the late 1890s that they settled back in Meade co. but this is where the story is so divided. Apparently James Lydia and kids along with Lydias mother Didama Nelson Bryant went to MO for some reason. She was drawing a widows pension from her husband from the civil war. Her brother in law told the local office that she lied about his having died from the war. My self I think he died from an allergic reaction to Morphine. Its in the pension papers how he was found dead. Anyway they came back to Ky from MO to answer these charges. and supposedly James fell out of the wagon and drowned while crossing a river. Which one I dont know. Amber was about 9/11 at the time. He remembered going there in a covered wagon. Then another story is that James died of painter poison, (Lead Poison) cause he was a house painter like Amber was. neither story gave an exact place of death and since Aunt Opal was the oldest at 16 when her grandmother Alice Chappell Brunton died she is the only one who remembered anything. She did remember that her ggrandfather on her dads side was named Lawrence. Which his name was Daniel Lawrence Bryant. They are all buried in the Thomas cemetery in Meade co. ky. Alice is suppose to be buried there also but there is no marker for her. So we Assumed that maybe James was also. but no record. I was blessed to have found a cousin who actually had a photo of him with Alice and the 3 kids they had and Alice son by her first marriage.
do you want to contact me off here. I feel so winded on here.

chappell.sue@gmail.com
Thanks
Sue

Do you ever get on Find a Grave (findagrave.com)? I must have found some information for someone on there about some of the Chappell family. I found a few different Cemeteries in Breckenridge, Kentucky. One was Chappell Cemetery in Union Star, Breckenridge, Kentucky and I noticed none of the entries were listed on Find a Grave so I posted the information I had found. There are 9 names:

Abell, James W 86663550
b. Jun. 12, 1893 d. Mar. 26, 1896 Chappell Cemetery
Union Star
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

Abell, Mellisa D 86663463
b. Aug. 27, 1895 d. Aug. 27, 1895 Chappell Cemetery
Union Star
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

Bassett, Ida Catherine Chappell 86663665
b. Jan. 12, 1880 d. Jul. 24, 1882 Chappell Cemetery
Union Star
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

Chappell, Elizabeth Jane Moore 86663955
b. 1835 d. Jan. 28, 1853 Chappell Cemetery
Union Star
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

Chappell, James Thomas 86664015
b. May 24, 1873 d. Oct. 22, 1874 Chappell Cemetery
Union Star
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

Chappell, William J 86663833
b. Jun. 24, 1802 d. Mar. 17, 1882 Chappell Cemetery
Union Star
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

Davis, William Harrison 103873138
b. Feb. 26, 1850 d. Jan. 30, 1927 Chappell Cemetery
Union Star
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

Pollock, Sarah Melissa Chappell 86664176
b. Mar. 18, 1843 d. Jun. 26, 1890 Chappell Cemetery
Union Star
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

Stiff, William Burrell 86664381
b. Dec. 24, 1783 d. Mar. 13, 1840 Chappell Cemetery
Union Star
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

The Chappells are the ones I added do any of them fit in with the information for your husbands ancestors? I requested photos of the headstones from volunteers in that area. I am in Colorado so unable to get those photos myself.

Thank you for your kind offer, however, I dont know if anyone can help, but James Chappell was born about 1865 or so compared to his wifes age of 1866. I have really not found anything that would help me tell his age. I did find his marriage record to Lydia Alice (Bryant) Meadows in Daviess co. Ky. in 1887. She was a widow to Thomas Meadows at the time. All I Have is the actual record but it tells nothing on it other than that they were married in that year and place. I cant help but feel sometimes that if i was able to get to the Daviess co. court house I might find something on it that was not clear to me before. But thats not something in the near future I will be doing.
they had my husbands grandfather in Clarksville, Montgomery co. TENN Feb of 1888. No reason in the family was ever given for a trip by them to TENN. my own theory was that William Chappell pershied in TENN during the civil war and that James and Alice went there to see his final resting place. and Amber was born while they were there. I also thought maybe a visit to a relative, but none of the names in the area sound familiar to me.

None of the lines listed on ancestry about William and his marriage to Louisa Jane Heister has any children listed. I do know know that they had at least 3 before William died. However thats the part that is so weird. in 1870 the child listed was name Thomas and Columbus, in 1880 the name is J. Chappell and C. Chappell and they are listed as being children of William Atkinson, so I am thinking that he might have adopted them when Jane died before 1880.

Does any of this make any sense. I also have a problem with William Chappell b 1831 having died during the Civil war because of the ages of the children. I think he came home and died at home from wounds gotten in the war. So much confusion about this family. And then James himself.
He died after the last child was born in 1892 and before 1900 as Alice is remarried again in Clark co. INd. before moving back to KY. but I cant find a death record for James anywhere in Ky.
I should shut up now and Thanks again for the offer.

Sue
I get feeling that same frustration sometimes while doing my own or my husbands family research.
If you would share your tree with me or your husbands so that I could see what info you have and just leave comments for you on what I find but not to make any changes, then I may try to help you sort out the info. when I feel like I don't know where else to go on our research.
I just enjoy helping others with their research too when I can though I am not a professional genealogist or anything. I have been able to help others when they want me to. I would be glad to help if you would like. I kind of enjoy investigating and solving mysteries or sorting out the information.
Lora

His line also runs thru the Bryants and Nelsons in the same area. and while I havent gotten far on them most of the info out there on them are from my own and a few others research. So it justs maddening to see so misinfo on the Chappells,

Thanks
Sue

I have noticed the same sort of things while doing research myself.
I try to look at the information that others have provided and compare it with what I know and just try to sort out the correct information for myself. I try to find proof of the information but, I know it can be very frustrating and difficult. It sure makes things a lot more work and time consuming. If I do, I will try to help find the correct information. If not I wish you the Best of Luck in Sorting it all out!
I am going to check if I have any connections at all with any of those families. Some of my ancestral lines are from the same area.

I guess I just dont understand how this works. I have researching for 33 years to try and straighten out my husbands family. His greatgrandfather was James M. Chappell b somewhere in Ky. his son said Meade co. Since he was the closest to his father before James died we have to assume he at least had more knowledge than we do now. However, I have not been able to prove his line to any good conclusion. I believe that he was the son of William Chappell and Louisa J. Heister. My reason for this is that my husbands aunt tol me when she was alive that they were related to the Adkinsons.

Louisa J. Heister sister Elziabeth married William adkinson and William and louisa Heister Chappell were living in 1860 in Meade co. ky. in 1870 Louisa was living with her sister and husband in Breckingridge co.
in 1880 only J. Chappell and C. Chappell were living with them. concluding that William died probably in the civil war. and that Louisa jane died before 1880 or remarried someone and left the boys with their uncle.
Williams first son was Morgan Chappell and he was living a few houses away in 1870. However this is where I am actually having trouble. William married Elzabeth Moore in 1851 in Bullitt co. ky. and in 1860 he married Louise Jane Heister in Meade co. ky. he was 29 and she was only 17. but others have him married to a Sarah Stiff also during this time. the ages of the children do not suggest this to be true. at 19 years of age William is still livng with his parents and is single. this is in 1850 in meade co. ky.

Then to top this all off, he is suppose to be the father to 5 other kids born between 1845 and 1855. So unless he was keeping two households (which anything is possible) at the same time being only 14 when one son was suppose to have been born. But then someone has one of his supposdly daughters Elizabeth married to an Alexander Hinton and having died in MO. but then I found her death record in MO records and while William Chappell is listed as her father. her mother is listed as Eliza A. Sprigg both born in Ky and she herself haveing been born around 1832/1840 in Jefferson co. and having married Alexander in 1860 in bullitt co. ky and moving to Lewis co. MO before dying.

Do people not read any of the info they put on their trees before they do it. Do they not double check any of their info. Are they just so anxious to see their names on those pages that they just add whatever looks good. it makes it hard for us who are really trying to work on this line get any accurate info if we are bombarded with misinformation like this.

Sue

Perhaps by now you have found this information: a Greenberry Thompson was s. of Lewis Thompson and Sabra Fryrear. According to his death record in 1915(Meade Co,KY), he was b. 1823 & mother's name looks something like Pryhhear.
I think the James Thompson who m. Delilah Burris in 1822 may have been s. of the James T. who was dec'd in the 1821 tax list; I haven't been able to further identify the elder James but want to. In 1845, Delilah's s., Washington, m. Judah(Julia) Ann Thompson, dau. of Lewis. (Hardin County Kentucky Marriages 1830 to 1850 by Mary Josephine Jones) Lewis had a s. James, m. Sarah Moore, 1845 (same ref. as above.)
Joan

Given the history of photography in America, I seriously doubt that anyone will have a picture of someone who lived/died in Meade County Kentucky in the 1830 - 1860 time period. But good luck!

I found the following by doing a google search on "shacklett":

John Shacklett b: March 06, 1796 in Meade County, Kentucky d: October 21, 1867 in Meade County, Kentucky + Susannah R Chalfin b: May 09, 1800 m: October 08, 1823 in Hardin County, Kentucky d: September 27, 1843 in Meade County, Kentucky
*2nd Wife of John Shacklett: + Elizabeth Chalfin b: 1802 in Hardin County, Kentucky m: April 10, 1845 in Meade County, Kentucky d: July 18, 1855 in Meade County, Kentucky

the only thing listed is their names and the date of 26 sept 1887 it does not give their parents names at all. It might not hurt to call the Meade co. Ky court house and see if you can get an actual copy. They usually only cost a couple of dollars. but if both John and Mary are of age when they married, its possible that neither parents names were on it.

Sue

Hi, this item intrigued me as it involved Meade co. Ky where my husbands relatives were from on his dads side. I have an "cousin" of my husbands who still lives in the area, I emailed her and ask if she knew anything about this. I also contacted the Meade co. Library and they are looking into this for you, but have you checked out the Find a grave site. both Fannie and Daniel are listed on there. There is an article on Daniels which explains his death, but maybe the family didnt believe this story and thats why you grandmother claimed he had been murdered.

If I hear back from the Library I will pass the info on.
chappell.sue28@gmail.com

Sue

I am looking for the marriage of Betty Wimp to a man by the last name of Davis (first name unknown). She was born about 1818 in Meade Co., Ky. and would have married about 1838 maybe. I have looked in Meade and surrounding counties and have been unable to find it. Also can't find the marriage of her mother, Jane Wimp, to an man by the last name of Hill. that took place about the mid 1840's.

I have some family (surname Owen) from the 1880's living in Spring Grove, KY which is located in Union Co. KY. In the 1880 census it is called the Village of Spring Grove. This could be the location of your ancestors.

Lynn

Fannie Alice Salkill McMonigle died on July 15, 1903. She was married to Daniel E McMonigle died 1933. We were told they died at the same time.....murdered and all they children were farmed out to relatives. They have been listed as living in Payneville, KY and New Amsterdam, Harrison County, IN..

So I am not sure why Grandmother said both her parents were murdered......but it was not true. Fannie may have been.....but I can not find any info online to solve this mystery. My grandmother didn't see her sibling again for 50 yrs when reunited.

If you have information of what might have happen that caused Fannies Death, it would be appreciated.

I am only a distant cousin to these 2 children. Two of the sisters of the 2 children married into the Woolfolk and Clarkson families in Meade Co. The others live outside of the area.Perhaps write to the editor of the local newspaper and ask for relatives.

I was wondering as to what to do as time has passed - the casket is starting to come to the top of the ground. I currently have horses there and did not want to disturb the horses or the grave. Was wondering if any of the family would like to come and get the casket for reburial or what they would like for me to do.
