The Shutt's were also my ancestors. My grandfather's grandfather was Charles Jacob Hayes, sister of Effie Hayes. I was wondering how you know this information about Eliza Jane Shutt Hayes, my grandfather never really knew much about that side of the family. I would love to contact both of you about your information! Please email me at settle.isaac@yahoo.com so we can swap info.

Isaac

There is a possible connection with your family to the Shutt family through the Austin family. Rachael Francis Austin Samples in your tree was the sister of William H. Austin, 1862-1938. He married Effie Jane Hayes, 1870-1941. So Effie Jane Hayes was the sister-in-law of Rachael Francis. This makes Druhamis Samples (Hamie in your tree) the niece of Effie Jane Hayes. Effie Jane Hayes’ Mother was Eliza J Shutt. So it appears that Hamie named her son after the mother of her aunt. This is unusual but is a possibility. Eliza J Shutt was a particularly kind and loving woman according to family lore and maybe there was a close relationship with Hamie or Rachael.

Here is a brief history of the Shutt family:

Jacob Shutt came to Kentucky sometime before 1800. The 1800 Kentucky census lists a Jacob Shuts (Shutt) living in Ohio County, east of McLean County. Jacob Shutt youngest son was born in 1787 in Maryland. So they probably came to Kentucky sometime between 1787 and 1800. His older son was born in Pennsylvania, so he also lived there. There was also a Jacob Henry Shutt family that settled in southern Muhlenberg County about this time. That Shutt family is well researched and originated in Germany. There may be a link between the two Shutt families and our Jacob Shutt likely came from Germany, but it is not known for sure. Jacob Shutt and his wife Elizabeth had four children:

Abraham Shutt, 1785 – 1866
Jacob Shutt Jr, 1787 - 1851
Susannah Shutt
Mary Shutt

By 1820, our Jacob Shutt family was living in what was then Muhlenberg County, just south of the Green River and they remained there for several generations. (Note: McLean County was formed by act of the Kentucky legislature on February 6, 1854 from portions of surrounding Daviess, Ohio, and Muhlenberg Counties, including a portion of Muhlenberg south of the Green River.) Jacob Shutt died in 1825.

Jacob Shutt Jr. was born November 24, 1787, in Maryland. He married Eleanor Clark on February 27, 1817, in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Jacob Jr. and Eleanor had five children:

Jacob M. Shutt, 1818-1897
Thomas Shutt, 1819-
Elizabeth Shutt, 1822-1853
Amanda Ann Shutt, 1822-1869
William H. Shutt, 1825-1890

Jacob Shutt Jr. died October 2, 1851, and is buried in the Shutt Cemetery in Rumsey.

Jacob M. Shutt was born February 27, 1818, in Muhlenberg County Kentucky. He married Jane Butler in
1839. Jacob M. Shutt was very prominent in McLean County. My Grandmother recalled going to church at Shutt Chapel and she also attended a school named after Jacob M. Shutt. There is still an area of McLean County that is referred to as the “Shutt Chapel” area. Jacob and Jane had four children:

*** Eliza Jane Shutt, 1840-1898 ***
Leonard J. Shutt, 1843-1914
Elvira Shutt, 1846-
Laura Shutt, 1849-1858

Eliza Jane Shutt Hayes died 8 Nov 1898 and is buried in the Popular Grove Cemetery in McLean County.

All of this information is in the Howell Family Tree on ancestry.com and of course you are welcome to it.

I hope this helps and good luck,

Harold Howell
My GG-Grandfather's middle name is Shutt. I've always thought that to be an odd middle name and assumed it was a family name of some kind. Travelling through the area and going through some cemeteries, I noticed it was a popular surname. Anyone know the history of this family or maybe know why his middle name might have been Shutt even though they're not in our tree?

Thanks!

I never knew her middle name. But I do know that she was born in 1919. She told all of us "I am making it to 90 then you all can kiss it."
My great grandfather was William Gobel Jr. He has passed away about a month or two ago and had about 88 grandkids spanning 3 generations. He had a number of kids from his first marriage but I don't know from his second. William Sr. and Jr. Both served in the US navy during war time, Sr in WW1 and Jr in WW2 while my great uncle Joe was a third generation. I also am posting a photo of William Sr's WW1 medal we just found.

Thanks again. This will save me a trip to McLean Co and I can concentrate on Daviess Co. I'm hoping they still had marriage bonds in 1901 and I can see who signed for her. I am trying to document who her parents were.

Your info is much appreciated since it will take me nearly 2 1/2 hours to get to Owensboro and now I will not waste precious time looking in the McLean County courthouse.

Pat
This might help - hope so.

I just went to familysearch.org
and did a search for a Dame - Belcher
marriage in Kentucky in 1901 and
was really surprised when this came up.

J.C. Dame married Luella Belcher on
Oct. 29, 1901 in Daviess Co., Ky.

And you know, Daviess is right
next to McLean. I expect you might
want to go to the Daviess Co. Library
in Owensboro or the WCK-FRA
Library in Calhoun or both.
I plan on visiting the McLean County Clerks office sometime this week to look up a 1901 marriage. Ancestry does not have any marriages from this year so if I can't find anything in the records room I would need to go to the library to look through old newspapers. My question is which library would have these old newspapers/genealogy room? I found one in Livermore and one in Calhoun or do I have to go to Daviess Co?

Thanks
Pat

I don't know that there were any local papers....I searched online and the Lexington newspaper keeps showing up in the results. I would think there would have been something else other than Lexington, but I'm not getting any results. I would think the library in McClean County would know what existed back in that time.

Hello
I am looking for information on what happened after the murder.

Homer Mitchell shot and killed Claude Arnold on 1 June 1935 on Main Street in front of the Post Office in Island KY.

He surrendered to the Sheriff and went to jail in Calhoun KY

This is all I know about the shooting. Is there a place that I can write to get information about the trial it there is one. How long was his sentence? Mitchell is on the 1940 census and he isn't in a prison. Did he go to prison or were the charges dismissed . Mitchell said that he shot Arnold because he (Arnold) had threatened him.

Is there a site on the internet that tells about murders in Mclean Co KY. There might not have been too many of them!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Linda in Montana

Lookup - Obit and/or Newspaper Articles

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could do a lookup of My great grandmother Joanah Igleheart Brown McCormick. Joanah was first married to John Brown, had several children, then married Steve (Stephen McCormick). She had several more children with Steve McCormick. However, Joanah died in 1904 and was buried with her first husband, John Brown. Joanah died just a couple of weeks after her last child Joseph Andrew Clint McCormick. This child lived for only a year. If information can be found on his cause of death that would be helpful as well.

Joanah is buried in Poplar Grove Cemetery. McClean county is listed as place of death. Joanah is under the Brown name in the cemetery, so I do not know if she is listed as Brown or McCormick in the death certificates and obituaries. Her 1st husband John Brown passed away in 1892.

Joanah Igleheart - Born Mar 22, 1867; Died March 27, 1904. Born and Died in McClean County, Kentucky. Last town listed where she lived was Rumsey.

Any help figuring out the details of her early death (and her young infant) are greatly appreciated!

The Ky. death index has death date as
June 1, 1935 as does the Daviess Co.
Library Obituary index. Typo?

Click on this link to the Ky.Room of
the Daviess Co. Library.

http://www.dcplibrary.org/departments/kentucky_room/

If you call them, they can tell you exactly how to
get what you want and MIGHT just give you the
obituary information you want over the phone.

From census records, I think Claud's father was
Amos R. Arnold ( Apr. 12, 1828 - March 28, 1896)
and from cemetery books he is buried at
Poplar Grove - Primitive Baptist Section,
McLean Co., Ky.
I don't have the actual obit, but the Daviess County library has an online search which gives abstracts of the obit itself. From that:

He was born in Muhlenberg County, KY and died in Owensboro, Daviess County, KY (at the age of 77) on May 10, 2001. He's buried at Island Methodist Church Union Cemetary in Mclean County, KY

He's survived by a son, Tommy Adkins, a daughter, Jackie Popwell, a sister, Alta Thomason and grandchildren (who aren't enumerated).

It also says he was a WWII veteran.

This was published in the 5/11/2001 Messenger Inquirer. Hope this helps!

I too, am looking for Mary Polly Talman Austin and her husband Francis Austin. Their great granddaughter Lucy Frances Cummings Padgett and Lucy's grandson Dewey Artis Padgett are buried there also. I was there this past summer and could not find the grave stones. If you have information concerning these distant relatives, I would appreciate it.

Kathie Richardson

Just found your post. I too would like to know if there is a Lucy France Cummings Padgett, and a Dewey Artis Padgett (child) and a Francis Austin buried in the Mount Liberty Cemetery. My cousin and I were there this summer, but we did not find their tombstones. Is there by any chance a Mary Polly Talman Austin buried there also? She would be the wife of Francis Austin (my ggggrandparents). Lucy Padget is my great aunt and the child is her grandson.

Any information that you have, would be greatly appreciated.

Kathie Richardson

Hi, Sandy. I just Googled Capt. Jacob Bennett and found your messages. He was my great-great grandfather, and I would love to find out more about him. His granddaughter (my grandmother) was Hettie Coffman Bennett Smith, and she died at age 103 in 2004. I am her only grandchild. She had one sibling, but I am not aware of any of those descendants who have been interested in tracing their ancestors. I would love to know any history you may have on him. I want to go to Overton Co. where my grandparents are buried, and Clay Co. where great grandparents are buried in the fall and take my mother. I would love to find the cemetery where Capt. Bennett is buried and see the plaque. Thanks so much for your help.

David M Hawkins and Juretta Ashby

I have been looking for any information about their deaths. They were both born in 1836 and died sometime between 1880 and 1900. I think they died in the 1890s but can't confirm without the 1890 census which doesn't exist anymore. Their headstones are not listen in the grave books written in the 1970s. They may have been buried in Earlington, Hanson, or Ashbyburg in Hopkins county across to border where they lived. However there may be newspaper records from McClean from around the time of their death. As well I heard there were some documents donated to the McClean Co. genealogical museum from one of the undertakers in the area in question and that perhaps the answer is hidden there.

Their only surviving child was Phillip Emberry Hawkins (died in 1941). David's father was Francis G. Hawkins (died 1876). Juretta's father was Absalom T. Ashby Jr (died 1865).

Any information would be welcome!
