WASHBURN, Gabriel

I am seeking information on Gabriel Washburn, b. abt. 1790 in NC, d. 1856 in Marshall Co. KY. I do not know who he married. I know of six children: Daniel, Harvey, Eliza, Harriet (my line), Lucinda, and Jane. Harriet was b. 1815 in Clark Co. IN, Jane was born in KY. These are the only children Gabriel listed in his will. He also listed a Winny Baker, who is listed on the 1850 Marshall Co. KY census as Winnyfred Baker, age 62, born in SC. She is listed in the household of Gabriel Washburn. I do not know who Winny is - perhaps a sister to Gabriel or his wife. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I spoke to an older man who
remembers this cemetery from his youth and he reported that there are many unmarked graves
here, among them slaves' graves that were only marked with river rocks. Several years ago
the cemetery was bulldozed for pasture. In the pasture, there are chunks of broken headstones.

William Henry RHODES, Marshall Co., KY b. abt. 1870

I am a quilt historian currently researching an early (poss. pre-1840) quilt made entirely of home-spun and home-woven fabric from the estate of Cosie Rhodes, unmarried daughter of William Henry Rhodes and Nina Faughn of Marshall County, KY. Cosie died in August 2006 at the age of 101. The hope is to identify possible makers of this unusual quilt and place it in the proper historical context.

Cosie's maternal genealogy is an open book right back to the 18th century. But her paternal genealogy is another story. William Henry Rhodes just seems to materialize in Marshall Co out of nowhere in 1900, when with wife Nina he's already got a few children on a farm that probably was part of the large Faughn holdings (in Olive Precinct, later "Magisterial District 1", at Heights and Hookers Bend Road.)

Census records indicate he came from Tennessee, but I cannot find out when or from where exactly. Part of the problem is that there are so many Rhodeses right across the TN border. I am wondering whether he came from Henry Co., TN, which is due south of Marshall just over the border. If so, was he the "Williams" who is a nephew of John and Susan Rhodes in Manleyville, Henry, TN in the 1880 census? I can't seem to find any other William or Henry that fits.

Family oral history and 1870 census records suggest that a "Roads" family, the only African-Americans who sharecropped on Faughn land, may have been the slaves Enos Faughn purchsed sometime after 1840. Could the connection between the Faughns and the Rhoadeses have originated in this transaction?
I have always had an interest in the cemeteries of Marshall County, Kentucky. My maternal line is basically from Marshall County, so I am quite familiar with most of the cemeteries.

I want to undertake something big. I would like to get a transcription of every cemetery, complete with pictures, to an online site, which would make access to Marshall Co. cemeteries available world wide. I have a webspace provider in mind for use, but cannot recall its name at this time.

I KNOW this is going to take a lot of time and manpower, but we can do it. We're genealogists and historians - we overcome brick walls all the time. If anyone is interested in helping in some way, please e-mail me, or post a reply here. Thank you for your interest!
McCoy's / Steele's

I recently found out new info, my gr. gr. grandfather Willis Mcocy was born in Marshall Co to Willis Mccoy and Sarah Steele. Sarah is the daughter of Alfred Steele. I have found out that Willis (1st) was the first murdered victim in Marshall Co, and he was murdered by Alfred Steele. Does anyone know anymore of the Mccoys or Steeles?? The 1850 census shows that Sarah & Willis are living there, but they both died in 1852. I think my gr. gr. Grandfather Willis (Alfred & Sarah's son went to live with some Harris's?) Does anyone know of this either? Please Help.

Mary Alice Fileds Mccoy

My great great grandmother was Mary Alice Fields she married Willis McCoy in Massac County at the home of E.W. Fields ( guessing its her father's house) on June 14, 1875. They lived in Marshall Co. in 1878, there is a birth record of a J.M. McCoy being born to them on March 22 1878. They had seven more children. I believe they may have moved to McCracken Co. But don't have hardly any information on Mary Alice. I assume she died because Willis remarried to a Katie Wilson. Any help will be appreciated.
