Dr. Hollis E. Mitchell, 86, of Scottsburg, Ind., died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare in Louisville.

Born June 12, 1922, in Eddyville, a son of the late Joe Craig and Martha Ann Litchfield Mitchell, he was a retired dentist, an elder and member of First Presbyterian Church of Scottsburg, Ind., served in World War II as a Quartermaster 1c in the U.S. Navy, and was class president and a graduate of Butler High School in Princeton. He earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree from George Peabody University in Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. A 50-year member of the Scottsburgh, Ind., Lodge #572 F&AM, former longtime member of the Scottsburg, Ind., Lions Club, he was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association, and the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of the Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity at the University of Louisville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy J. “Dotty” Stallins Mitchell, on Oct. 22, 2005; two brothers, Jack Mitchell and Willard Mitchell; and two sisters, Ollie Carmen and Archie Allen.

Survivors include three daughters, Becky A. Mitchell of New Albany, Ind., Carol and husband Roger St. Clair of Scottsburg, Ind., and Marsha G. Mitchell of St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren, Autumn Fischer, Brock Reifsnider, Sarah Williams, Emily St. Clair, Asher and Drue Smith; and a great-grandchild, Tate Williams.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, June 3, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Scottsburg, Ind.

Burial will follow in Scottsburg Cemetery with military graveside services by Crothersville V.F.W. Post #1083 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Collins Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church until the funeral hour.

Masonic services were conducted Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home by the Scottsburg, Ind., Lodge #572 F&AM.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to First Presbyterian Church of Socttsburg, c/o Collins Funeral Home.
