Donald G. “Donnie” Powell, 73, of Eddyville, died Friday, March 21, 2008, in Nashville, Tenn.
Born Aug. 18, 1934, in Richland, Ind., a son of Arvil and Hazel Powell, he lived in Providence since 1948, graduating from Providence High School. He and wife Verna owned and operated Powell Enterprises in Providence, reclaiming land from strip mining. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Providence and the Bible Baptist Church in Eddyville, was active with youth programs in both Eddyville and Providence and was an avid outdoorsman, who built the Powell soccer field in Eddyville and little league ball fields in other communities.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Powell; and a daughter, Stephanie Don Powell.
Survivors include his wife, Nella; a stepdaughter, Jenny Larmouth of Madisonville; two stepsons, Chuck Cavanah and David Cavanah, both of Paducah; two stepgrandchildren, Jason Sullivan and Kady Cavanah; two sisters, Lorna Lee Martin of High Ridge Mo., and June and husband Perry Newcomb of Providence; several nieces and nephews; and Kathy Curry of Providence, who worked for him and was considered family.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at Townsend, Jones & Erdman Funeral Home in Providence. The Rev. Jim Fortner officiated the service.
Burial followed in Lakeview Cemetery. (Webster Co., Ky.)
