Kentucky Marriage Index lists a marriage between David Lewis and Martha Howard 5 Jul 1890 in neighboring Clay County Kentucky. I think this probably David Lewis born about 1873 listed in 1880 census in Clay County in the household of Addison Lewis age 35 and Isabella Lewis age 32. Addison Lewis is also listed in the 1860 census in Clay County in the household of David Lewis age 65 born in Virginia and Lucinda Lewis 55 born in Tenn. Although there are other David Lewis's living in Clay and Leslie Counties, they are much older or still alive after 1900. Unfortunately Ancestry's online version of the actual Clay County marriage pages (which would give age at marriage) us missing the period 1878 to 1904. I do not know whether this means that the originals are missing or were just missing from this site.

Good Luck--Fellow researcher

Your great grandmother was a different Polly Howard than the one discussed earlier. It looks like your great grandmother Polly was born about 1895, while the Polly Howard in this list was born in 1868. Do you know who your great grandmother Howard's parents were?

Looking for unknown male married to Corty (Carty) Howard Lewis. Corty was born 1875, daughter of Malindia and John Howard in Leslie County Kentucky. In the 1900 census, she has moved back in with her parents, is listed as widowed, and has already given birth to Martha Ann Lewis (b 1894). Martha Anne married Rev Waldron Asher 3 Mar 1914 in Leslie County, Ky. I have been unable to locate a marriage certificate or first name for the male Lewis.
Re: Shelly Hall & Minnie North- MAJOR CORRECTION!

Hello,

In re-reading the information I have given to you, I am NOW having some major doubts about it.

First, I made an error when I said that Dwelling 160-109 for the 1900 Leslie Co. This should read that it is the 1920 Fed. Census.

But. . . and this is where I now have doubts. As of 1920, this Shelly HALL is listed as an 8 yrs old child. Well, that cannot be since he married , according to the Index in 1920. Just too darn young. And, according to the marriage record his mother was a Martha NANTZ vs. a Fannie CALDWELL. I do see there was a Shelby HALL who married in 1929 to a Ozella BOWLING. Will check that one out.

Now I can see that the Shelly with James HALL and Fannie is actually the Shelby HAlL who marries in 1929. Age makes sense and parents match. SEE marriage record below:

Husband: Shelby Hall
Husband Age: 18
Condition: single
Husband POB: Leslie County, Kentucky
Husband Residence: War Branch, Kentucky
Parents of Husband: James Hall and Fannie Hall
Occupation of Husband: Farmer
Date of License: 18 June 1929
Wife: Ozella Bowling
Wife Age: 16
Condition: single
Wife POB: Leslie County, Kentucky
Wife Residence: War Branch, Kentucky
Parents of Wife: Bill Bowling and Betty Bowling
By whom Married: I. G. Brock a minister of the Church of God
Place of Marriage: War Branch, Kentucky
Date: 22 June 1929
Witnesses: Nancy Bowling and Fannie Brock
Remarks:
Marriage Book 20, page 70

I really now don't know who the heck Shelly HALL's parents were that married Minnie NORTH. SORRY!!!!

Joyce Taylor Collins
La Palma, CA

Hello,

I can only find a partial answer to your questions. I AM NOT related so far as I would know.

Shelly HALL and Minnie NORTH are on the 1930 and 1940 Fed. census as follows:

1930 Leslie Co., KY - Bad Creek
Dwelling 30-30
HALL, Shelly, 25, mar. at 19, head, b. On the 1920 census, Wheeler is not in Leslie Co. and Myrtle NORTH, age 11 is a servant in the WILSON household #161-56. Minnie NOrTH, age 13 is a servant in a HOSKINS household at dweling 161-86.

When you go back to the 1910 census, the whole family appears intact:

Dwelling 139-153 - Bad Creek
NORTH, Wheeler, 29, head, mar. 1, mar. 6 yrs, b. KY; parents b. KY
. .Martha, 32, wife, "married 2nd time", mar. 6 yrs, 8 born; 2 living, b. KY; parents b. KY
. .Minnie, 5, dau, b. KY
. . Myrtle, 4, dau, b. KY

In the 1900 Wheeler NORTH is not present in Leslie Co., KY.
However, as of the 1900 Leslie Co., KY, this appears to be
Shelly HALL with his family:

1900 - Bad Creek
160-109
HALL, James, 38, head, b.
I am doing some research for my sister-in-law, Kris. Wiley Baker was her Grandfather. I have a newspaper clipping that I found in the San Francisco Tribune dated April 5, 1923. The headline reads "Siberian Bride Seeks Divorce". I also have some documents that Kris sent me that are all in Russian. She is hoping that they will shed some light on the "truth" surrounding Zineida/Zeneida like her real date of birth and maybe her parents. I am taking them to work with me on Monday to have them translated by a co-worker who is from Russia.

I am looking for any information on a Wiley Baker. Information I have from the 1920 census (Military Schedule, Philippines) indicate that he was born about 1892 in Kentucky. His wife was Zinaida A Baker from Siberia, Vladivostok Russia.

I have a passport application for Zinaida Baker, born Tomsk, Siberia, Russia dated January 1, 1920 which states that she was united in marriage to Wiley Baker on October 1, 1919 at the Siberian Naval Barracks Church in Vladivostok and that she was born on October 23, 1904. Her place of residency in the US is that of her Husband Wiley and is listed as Shoal, Kentucky. Application is so that she can accompany her husband, a cpl, Co "H" of the 31st infantry, AEF, Siberia.

Rumor has it that she married only to escape Russia and that after returning to the US, she accompanied her husband to California and divorced him not long after arriving in San Francisco. They had one child, Patricia Lillian born October 20, 1920.

Would like to know who Wiley's parents were and any siblings and if he remarried after his divorce from Zinaida or if he was married prior to Zinaida.

Zinaida was only 15/16 at the time of her marriage to Wiley. (Her birth date keeps changing depending on what records you are looking at or which family members you ask).

Wiley Baker died on August 16, 1937 and he is buried in the San Francisco National Cemetery. Funeral records list him as Corporal Wiley Baker, Company H, 31st infantry. He is buried in Plot D 818.
