Greetings Theresa

How do you get to your family tree? My GGG-GF married into the Hensley family in Clay Co., Ky. Edmund Houpt married Zanah Hensley, D/O Pleasant Hensley, as did his brother Thomas Houpt married Nancy Hensly, sister of Zanah. The Hensley family was from N.C., moved to Tennessee and on to Ky. Edmund and Zanah (Hensley) Houpt were both murdered in Mercer County, Ky. in 1902.

According to this link: http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ky/death/search.cgi
Elsie's middle name began with an "M".
If you obtain a copy of or visit the courthouse to see a copy of the death certificate there will be information that gives the exact name of the cemetery. There are many farm, church and large cemeteries in the area, but finding a burial site from 1947 should not be difficult. I would expect that there could also be an obituary in the local newspaper archives. There may be additional information in the Kenton County Library which is located at 6th and Scott St. in downtown Covington.
If her husband, Franklin Lipscomb, was a minister with his own congregation, then there would certainly be a news article.
Independence, Kenton, KY is located on KY Route 17,in the south central area of Kenton County and is the oldest of the two county seats in Kenton County. It is not too far from Morning View, which is on KY Route 177, South and East of Independence. There are many rural roads that cross from KY 17 to KY 177. I think that "Lipscomb Road" is one of them. The other county seat is Covington, Kenton, KY. There could be a copy of the certificate at Independence and/or Covington. Another clue: In 1947 most of the births took place at the old St.Elizabeth Hospital in Covington. There is a good general map of the area on the web site:
"ePodunk.com" just plug in "Morning View, KY". Make sure it is the one in Kenton County, KY.

I have previously been told by a family member that my Grandmother was actually married for a short time to another man prior to being wed to my Grandfather. I was turned upside down by this as it was a complete shock!

I am unable to locate a record of this as of yet due to the marriage records for the corresponding years not being online. My grandmothers name is Carol Jean Robinson (b. May 6th, 1935 F:Everett Robinson M: Rose Nell Anderson. She married my grandfather Carl Shell (b. March 22, 1930 F: Lincoln Shell M: Betty Lee Simms) on May 8th 1954.

If anyone could help me find any information on her first marriage it would be greatly appreciated. Any record would be a tremendous help in my genealogical upheaval.

Thanks!
Monica Ammerman

Independence is indeed a town in Kenton County, but it also has a rather large cemetery by that name. It is highly likely the burial was in this cemetery. The records for this cemetery are maintained by the folks who also manage the Highland Cemetery. See: http://www.highlandcemetery.com/ If you contact them, they can look up the burial information.

John Charles Tippet
johntippet@cox.net

Her death certificate is available to be seen and copied on Ancestry.com's database of Kentucky Death Records.

It does say the Lipscombs' residence was rural Kenton County, in Morning View. However, under cremation/burial information it says "Independence". I don't know if that's an area or name of a cemetery. I hope someone local can help you more specifically

A good source for information about some personal and public information, ie: names, families, occupations, status, etc., for ANY addresses would be the City and Telephone Directories for any city of decent size. In this case, The Kenton County Public Library, on Scott St. in downtown Covington, has a very good collection of directories of various types. I feel sure that there will be someone who would gladly look up that information for you. I waa able to trace all of my extended family in Covington by using the city directories from before the early 1900's to the present time. There were a few women listed as "sgl" with the company they worked for also listed.
And by the way, although the area is generally known as "Main Strasse" now, "Main Strasse" generaly applied to Main Street between 2nd St. on the north, and south to Pike St. I think "Main Strasse" came about as a publicity ploy when the Bell Tower was built on the west end of 6th St, on the edge of Goebel Park.(Played a lot of baseball there in the 30's-40's.)
"Peazleburg" comes to mind for the west side of Covington, from the river to 12th St. and from the C & O Railroad Tracks west to Western Ave., anyone remember that name? What about the "Shirley Theatre" on Main, the "Family Theatre" on Holman, the Broadway on 7th, the Liberty and Madison on Madison, the Kentucky at Rittes's Corner,(Latonia)and the Derby on Decourcey,(Rosedale)? The good old "growing up days" in Covington. Good hunting!
You are welcome. But ...you did not answer my question about 1860. If the Frank and Sophia married in 1858 then they have to be somewhere in 1860. Have you found them? If you have not I would be happy to continue looking because hard to find census records are the most fun to find. It might also answer the question of Joseph's birth depending on what date the census was taken on. Please do let me know what else you find.

Margaret

Hi Rob. I can't read the writing at the top of the page for the first column but I believe it would be the Book# and then the Page#. I checked your posts to get more information on your ancestors. You said that they were in Kenton Co. in 1860 but I can't locate them in that census. I did find them in 1870 and 1880 in Marshall County, West Virginia. In 1870 the census states that the first child Joseph is 8 years old. I know that 1880 lists him as 20. Do you have the 1860 census? If you do I would be curious to see it so maybe you could supply me with the particulars to locate it. I did also find a Sophia SHAMER listed in the 1900 census for Ohio Co., West Virginia. She has very similar information to Sophia SHANER. It does list her as a widow even though it states she has no children. But perhaps she somehow became estranged from them? And the immigration date is wrong. Have you checked out this lady? You might be able to track down her death information. I also saw a query where you were looking for an obituary in California. If you go to the Rootsweb.com site you can join a mailing list called "California Death Index" that has people who look up obituaries for free.

Margaret

Hi Rob. I checked the Kenton County, Ky. site and the marriage is listed there. It is a transcription and Clara's last name is spelled "GARLING". Go to Kentucky Genweb: http://www.kygenweb.net/

Click on Kenton County

Click on Marriages on the left side.

Under Images for grooms click on S2b.
The area around St. John Church on Pike St was called Lewisburg. I'm not sure if that would have included the Main St. district since the Catholics in that area would have attended St. Aloysius. The only other nickname I remember is Madisonville which would be the area around St. Mary's Cathedral--oh wait, I rmemeber Helentown, too. I associate that one with the old St. Joe's Church on east 12 th street.

My husband's aunt, Elsie Rupert Lipscomb, died 15 January 1947 in childbirth at age 24. According to her obituary, she was buried at Morning View, KY. We will be in that area early next month and would like to try to find her grave. I don't have anything that tells me where the cemetery is located other than Morning View. According to family tradition, her husband, Franklin Lipscomb, was a preacher and had his own church in that area. If anyone could give me any information on where to look for the cemetery, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks for clearing the "Peaselburg" question up.
My sometimes faulty memory goes back to the late 1930's when the 4th District school was being built on Scott St. at 15th. The 4th District students were split up and assigned to the district school on Holman St., at 17th?? and to the district school on the eastern end of 18th or 19th Sts. Over the time it took to build the 4th, students were reassigned from one to the other, depending upon the grade they were in. I attended both, or should I say all three. I lived on Scott, between 15th and 16th, and completed the 6th grade at the "New" 4th District in 1942. Graduated from Holmes in 1948. Anyone out there from the area around the 4th District in that time period?
New questions: What was the area from about 12th St north to the Ohio River and from Russell St, or the railroad to Ludlow known as before "MainStrasse" was used? Nickname? What were the "nicknames" for the various areas of Covington? Thanks.

I have some info now. My SENOURS (Wilford and Eliza) are in the 1880 Fair, Platte, Missouri Census. They were married and have a child (Perry W. Senour 12). I know that my great grandfather Perry Werner Senour bought plots for them at the Richwood Cememtery in Ky. From that date on the rest of my family has been buried there. Eliza's maiden name is Marshall. Her brother Thomas and he is buried right across from Wilford and Eliza (one headstone). Perry (their only son is buried beside them with his only wife Fannie Senour. Perry W. and Fanny Senour had a son my great grandfather Harvey Senour who married Lena Holtzworth. THey had 2 daughters Mary Elizabeth and Loretta Senour.....Mary Elizabeth is my grandmother. All of these people are buried at Richwood Pres. Church Cememtery. So I found them.....Thank you for all the help.

For reason unknown I have had Perry Werner Senour listed as female with no descendant listing. It is interesting that your Perry W. wife was Fannie. In my records are the following: 1. Bryant Senour m Ann McCollum; 2. Wilford Senour m. Sarah Wayman; 3. Tilman Wilford Senour m. Anna Cox;4a Ulysses Grant Senour m. Frances (Fannie) Fern White (my great aunt); 4b. Wilford Easton Senour; 4c. Perry Warner Senour. Looks like Warner should be Werner. Ann McColum's father was John McCollum and his wife Ann. This John died in 1796 in Campbell Co. KY. Your Ann Senour was sister to my John McCollum. So we are very distant cousing. I am also descended from Marshall. Was your Marshall from northern Kentucky? I am trying to connect my Sarah Marshall
Sorry about that, I forgot to mention it. No, no matter how I have searched, I have NEVER found the 1860 census for Frank (Franz) Josef (Joseph) Schaner (Schoner..etc). Maybe you will have better luck than I have...but I just cannot seem to find Frank in 1860 ANYWHERE, not just in Kentucky. I re-checked my grandmother's old notes about the record of the Franz Schoner/Clara Yarling marriage, and it states-

"22 Nov 1858 Marriage to Clara Yarling, Kenton County, Kentucky, USA. County Seat Kenton Co Book 2 Page 151 microfilm #3189B, married by James Arnold, Witness - William Roden."

So yeah, your right, it must be "Book 2 p.151". What is a "Book" though? Is it a book of marriages in the Kenton County Courthouse? Im still confused here lol.

And yes, those 1870 and 1880 census records in West Virginia is Franz Joseph Schoner and his family. As you can see, the two younger children's ages are consistant, except for my relation, Franz's eldest son Joseph Frank. In 1870, Joseph Frank is 8yo and in 1880 he is his proper age of 20. It looks like in 1870 they fibbed his age -2 years to make it look like "Sofia" had him when she was 16, not 14.

As for "Sofia Shamer", I found that literaly two days ago, and saved her record to my Ancestry.com "Shoebox". Everything you said is correct...it could be her, but the wrong immigration and number of children is wrong. I would find it strange that it was her, however, as Sofia/Clara Yarling and Franz Josef Schoner had 3 children living in the area at the time. You would think she would live with her children, right? Anyway your right, I am currently tracking down her death information as we speak via the Digitalized West Virginia Vital Research Records site. I will let you know what I find.

Anyway, once again, I REALLY appreciate your help. I am not the biggest fan of Ancestry.com's business strategy, but I AM a fan of these forums, and the kind and helpful people like you who go out of your way to help others solve their genealogical problems. Thank you!

Rob Williams

They dont have it? I thought they did, as I just ordered from the FHC the Kenton County, Kentucky -

Marriage bonds, v. 1-2 1840-1876 | FHL US/CAN Film 551093
Marriage licenses, v. 1-2 1840-1865 | FHL US/CAN Film 551096

Or are you looking for the actual marriage certificates? I am confused here. In fact, I was confused when I ordered those two records, because I wanted a marriage from 22 Nov 1858 I know exists there...(my grandmother saw it, but it was before scanning microfilm was easy).

Anyway, thanks for the help and I hope you figure out your problem. Later.

Rob Williams

What a kind service you all are offering!

Does anyone happen to have a CD or access to marriages in Covington, Kenton, Kentucky, in 1858? I am looking for the marriage of "Franz/Frank...Josef/Joseph...Schaner/Shaner/Schoener/Schoner" (sorry for the multiple spellings) to Clara Yarling on the 22 November 1858 in Kenton County, Kentucky.

I know the original poster sayed they only B/D records starting at 1911...but maybe someone else has marriage records going back farther? I know the record exists somewhere, as my grandmother once recorded it...and I just want to doublecheck what she saw.

Anyway, thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

Rob Williams

Just a quick addendum-

The reason I want the most original record as possible is I am wondering (if it gives) the age of Clara G/Yarling. I think she was born in 1846, and this marriage was in 1858, which would make her 12 years old, and then I know for a fact that her husband Frank Schoner's eldest son was born in 1860, which would have made her 14/15 years old.

Obviously, her extreme young age confounds me, so I am very curious to get as much information as I can from the oldest marriage record possible. I am aware that many times when you order a "New" copy of a marriage record (or any BMD record) from the State, you often recieve an "abridged" copy that often contains minimal info, leaves out certain info, or has mis-interpreted info. That is why I would rather find a microfilm of the original, and my last ditch solution would be to order a new copy from the State.

Anyway, thanks again!

Rob

Thank you VERY much!!! That is definately them. That was very kind of you!

Next to their names, it mentions "____ 2 page 151" (I cannot read the column header for the "2"). Is it What do those numbers correspond to? Microfilm? Book? Is there any way to get the original marriage certificate?

Anyway, thanks again for the help; I really appreciate it!

Rob Williams

Depending on the year of the census, Im thinking they may have lied about where they were born because of the anti
semitism of the time against germans. in this area, they
closed newspapers that were german , businesses, during
Hitler's regime.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
According to Albert Adam Rider's death cert., his parents were both born in Germany. However, the 1900 Whites Tower, Kenton Co, Ky. census lists his Father born in Ohio and his Mother born in Ky.

Thanks so much!

A good way to check on who lived at 524 Philadelphia would be to locate your family members there in the 1930 census. If you can view that page, you'll see whether it was a multiple family home by the people listed as living there.

Someone just noted an interest in old Covington theatres. I found this page the other day when I thought about the Family Theatre on Main Street and was wondering if it was still standing. It is and there's a photo.
http://www.cinematour.com/theatres/us/KY/2.html
