Randall, I knew your family, the Testermans in Tomahawk. -There were TWO James Wards: #1. James "Lemill" Ward m. Sarah Osborne. They lived at Offit in Johnson Co. ( wonderfully, their house is still there)I can find NO documented evidence of this James' parents although every one assumes he was the son of William Ward therefore descending from James Ward (Immigrated around 1720)of Northern Ireland. I corresponded with the lady who researched the James Ward of Va. line for 30 years and she could find NO link to the Johnson Co. Ky Wards. This family ( #1. )had a son William of River in Johnson Co. who had a son Jonathan who moved to Tomahawk in Martin Co. Jonathan was my g granddad and I own the hause he built in 1860. He and his wife Pricie Williamson (James - Alden Jr.- Alden m. to Mary Ward ,daughter of James #1. ,- Hugh) are buried on the hill behind my house. ----------- #2 James "Pioneer" Ward born in Fincastle Va. (B. 1758-Died Martin Co 1848) was NOT a son of #1 as far as I can see. Pioneer James Ward was in Ky as early as 1770 as an explorer and soldier. He was at Fort Booneborough according to his Rev. War Affidavit. One book mentions a James Ward as one of three explorers that were the first White men to reach the Mississippi River by going across Ky. He lead a VERY colorful life as documented in Billie Edyth Ward's books. In 1810 he settled down near Inez, in Martin County Ky. marrying the young Elizabeth Williamson (dau of Alden). They had a son, Wells Ward, who was Martin co. sheriff and lived at Saltwell branch of the Middlefork of Rockcastle Creek. He married Senna Preston, (sister of Araminta Preston who married Nathan Ward (D. US Army at Peachtree during Civil War; he was bro. of Wells) and daughter of Henry Preston and Betsy Cain (Kains?). Senna and Wells are buried at Saltwell cemetary near Inez. Their youngest son, Stephen A. Douglas Ward was my g grandad. He married Alta McGinnis(dau. Jackson McGinnis and Mary Cassady)and they are also buried at Saltwell with the rest of my immediate family and where I will be buried some day. I don't know who were the parents of #2 but I would love to find out.
