James "Lemill" Ward did NOT settle in present day Martin Co. He settled at Offit in Johnson Co. circa 1800) He was married to Sarah Osborne and had a large family and has descendants all over the world now. ---- James "Pioneer" Ward (born 1758 in Fincastle Va - died 1848 near Inez, Martin co. Ky) was a noted explorer, Indian fighter, and longhunter who settled down with his wife Elizabeth Williamson in 1810 in Martin Co. on Rockcastle Creek. He also had many children but not quite as many descendants as the other Ward. As far as I know, no one has found the link between the two. Billy Edyth Ward, in her book the "Ward Genealogy", speculated they were related because of the similiar naming patterns in both families but she had no evidence of specific relationship. For what it's worth, my grandfather descended from Johnson Co. James Ward and my grandmother from Martin Co. James Ward. They said they were no relation. I really don't know?????
