Hi Cousin Wally,
I have been researching the Covert family for some time. I have found a Sir Bartholomew Covert (knight) from the town of Couvert, Normandy, France. He came over with William the Conqueror in 1066 and settled in Sussex, England. There are many generations of Coverts who are English knights, and their descendants (according to the Royal line) are Sir Winston Churchill and Lady Diana Spencer. Pretty neat stuff.

The part that I have had difficulty piecing together is how the "de Couverts" of Normandy are related to Teunis Janse of Heemsteede, Holland. I am a lot closer than I was a year ago.

It seems the branch in England comes from the town in Couvert, France and that several generations of Lords and Knights from France established footholds throughout Northern and Central France. In the 1500s they appear in Eastern France and Belgium keeping the names Couvert and Coovert. Teunis Janse was purportedly born in Lommel, Brabant, Belgium and there is a small snippet of history of how the Belgian Coverts came from Northern France to Belgium. (There are also Irish Coverts that came from France and the Sherrif of Cork was a Covert as well - these were reported to be French Huguenots that came over in the 1500s).
I am going on an expedition with my oldest son this summer to visit the homesteads in Sussex, England; in France near Couvert (near Caen and Bayeux) and finally in the Netherlands (Heemstede and Hoorn which are very near Amsterdam). Let me know if you are interested in the findings.
Take care,
Raymond Covert

Hi John - It's been several years since I have heard from Jeanne Filce - she was instrumental in documenting Janvier family.

I have taken what she gave me back in 2000-2002 and have a preyy updated tree. My history goes through my grandfather Col. E. Bruce January, his father Melvin January, then William Dock January, and Samuel W. January, and George G. Janaury, Samuel Alonzo January, John Irvin January, then Peter Janvier - which is where things get hectic on details.

If you can give me the birthdate of your grandfather George C. January - I can tell you what I have.

Yes I have a copy of this. What I hope to establish is Michael Crow the son and executor of Leonard's estate that his son Michael is the same Michael Crow b 1766 MD and find out the relationship status between Michael Crow b 1766 and Leonard Crow born 1765 MD because there is a DNA connection between those two. I hope to find Michael's (the executor) will, a baptism certificate, church records something that connects the 2 Michael's and the younger Leonard. It will break through a brick wall for the genealogists researching this line. At one point York County was part of Maryland. Wish me luck I will post what I find when I return from my trip later this year.

As per DNA testing Leonard Crow is related to Michael Crow b 1766 MD owned a good deal of property in Fayette County, PA called Crow's Nest. There was a tract of land along George's Creek which he purchased from the Indians which he bought for a fair price, His farm was self sufficient. They had chickens for eggs and meat, sheep for fur that was woven into yarn, cows for milk, cheese and meat, hunting provided meat and leather for harnesses, belts, shoes and crops for food and feed for the animals and the like and more. He had a Grist Mill and he had a still. It was common during the week to see several wagons parked out front from people in the area coming to buy stuff the farm produced and items that were made. Once a year, Michael would loads up a boat of goods and moonshine taking it down the Monongalia River to the Ohio River to the Mississippi down to New Orleans where he sold everything. He would then take a boat to New York where he would buy a horse and ride through sometimes hostile Indian territory to return to the farm.
There is a theory which I will be investigating later this year that there was a Leonard Crow b 1710 arrived in the US in 1743 had a son named Michael b 1740 maybe the father to my Michael b 1766 and Leonard father of Benjamin Crow. The time is right the area is right I just have to make the connection between Michael Crow and Michael and Leonard. I can tell you this Michael was proud of being from "Dutch royalty" (I don't think it was Dutch in the literal sense--possibly Pennsylvania Dutch as Leonard b 1710 had gotten on the boat in Germany). He used the word "me" instead of "my". Hopefully I will find the right documents when I visit York County this year. Michael did not own slaves there's no known record of Leonard Crow owning slaves either. Benjamin moved to Pike County, MO after he married and I don't think he owned any slaves either. If I find the connection I will post it as it has been a brick wall for everyone researching this Crow line.

Any Allsmans or otherwise interested parties -

My uncle has accumulated a large amount of family info the hard way - by visiting county courthouses and through correspondence. I have just read through it and there is much about Old Andrew, Harrison, Aaron & Elizabeth Logue Allsman, Salsmans, Alomon (Alderman), etc.

I am happy to share any or all of it with you. I have it all as scanned material (pdfs requiring Adobe Acrobat). It is too much material to attach to an email. I can either print it and mail, or mail it to you on a disc or a thumbdrive.

Much of it includes info on Alsman/Allsman lines I am not familiar with and I know is not of my line, which descends from Aaron Alsman & Elizabeth Logue Allsman. Some of it is indeed from my line and lines which we married into - Linns, Burgesses, Rohrers, etc. It includes county land ownership maps in KY, IN, IL, & OK.

If you want it let me know.

One nugget is from the 'Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution buried in Indiana, Volume II', published by the Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution, dated 1966. It lists 'ALLSMAN (Almon, Alderman, Alsman), ANDREW'.

I'd like to compare notes with you, Tracey.

I'm curious as to whether or not you've found anymore information since you originally posted this. My brother, who is a Richardson, had his y DNA tested and though it didn't match any other Richardson's yDNA in the data bank, one of the closest matches was to a Joseph Bruce descendant. I was trying to see if I could find a reason for that when I discovered that Joseph Bruce lived with a Richardson family for the first ten years of his life. (Our Richardson line started with Charles Richardson b 1802 in Vermont, d 1888 in Nebraska, but we have no information further back on him.) Maybe it's just a coincidence, but with the DNA match I wonder if there is more of a connection between the Richardson and Bruce families?

I am descended from Andrew Alsman (1748-1858, SAR P-102974), also listed as Andrew Altman (1748-1858, DAR A132856). He emigrated from Baden Germany and served in the 4th Pennsylvania Line Infantry Regiment to the best of my current ability to tell. This regiment served in several engagements, the Siege of Ft Washington, Brandywine, & the Paoli Massacre among them. He is listed on the regimental roll in 1780 as 'Andrew Alomon, alderman', according to PA state records. He settled first in Jessamine County KY on land given him for his war service, before settling again in Sullivan County IN.

At the time of the 1830 Census he was living with the family of James & Syntha Mason. Syntha was his grand-daughter by his daughter Agnes and her husband Amos Sinclair.

He is listed on find a grave dot com as 'Andrew Alsman', and buried in Sullivan County IN. I have been to the Alsman burial ground there which belonged to Raymond Alsman as of 2001.

I believe Andrew was married to Ann Stallins. They are my g-g-g-g-grandparents.

Their son, Aaron Allsman (1797-1864) - who may be a grandson since he was born in 1797 and may have been raised by Andrew and Ann upon the death of a son - is buried in Christian County IL. He and his wife Elizabeth Logue Allsman are my g-g-g-grandparents.

Their son, William Paris Allsman (1831-1892), farmed land in Christian County IL, but lost his first wife, Martha Hudson, and 4 of their 5 children to cholera near the outbreak of the Civil War. He left his remaining son, Simpson (b.1854), with family and volunteered for service in the 35th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, mustering in in Decatur IL on July 3rd, 1861. The regiment fought in the following engagements - Battle of Pea Ridge, AR, Siege of Corinth, MS, Battle of Perryville, KY, Battle of Stones River, TN, Battle of Chickamauga, GA, Battle of Missionary Ridge, TN (where his regiment was one of 3 regiments which scaled the defended ridge and drove the Confederates from its summit against Grant's orders), Battle of Rocky Face Ridge, GA, Battle of Resaca, GA, Battle of Dallas, GA, & the Battle of Mud Creek, GA. The Regt mustered out in Springfield IL Sept 27th, 1864, having marched 3,056 miles. This according to the Adjutant General of the State of IL.

He then settled again in Christian Co IL and married Philena Lucretia Buckner. They were in Christian Co IL with Simpson during the 1870 Census. Simpson subsequently died of pneumonia and they moved to Crawford Co MO and farmed land near Leasburg MO. William became a justice of the peace and Philena taught school and served as a midwife. They had 10 children, 5 of which lived to adulthood - Aaron, Andrew Calvin, Winfield Scott, Orville Logan, & Elizabeth.

His son, Winfield Scott Allsman (1874-1950), is my great-grandfather. Scott left home at age 16 for unknown reasons. He married Mary Ellen Burgess (1874-1948), and for a time they were itinerant and had 4 children - Osa (daughter), Willie 'Bill' Edward (son), Allie (called Petey, daughter), & Ollie (daughter). Bill was born in Gainesville TX. At Calvin's suggestion they settled on land in Blaine County, Western Oklahoma, near Longdale, at the end of the Oklahoma land rush. Suffering from drought, they experienced 3 years of crop failures and lost the land. Scott built the family a dugout - a hole in the side of a hill - outside of town, miles from the nearest water. Scott took Bill to Montana to work in the mines to send money home. He and Bill built Bill a house in Longdale, and Scott and Ellen lived in a house nearby for a time. Scott and Ellen then moved to Bison, Kansas, where Scott was the school janitor and the couple lived in the school's basement.

Willie Edward (Bill) Allsman (1897-1979), was my granddad. He earned his telegraphy diploma in 1916 and went to work for the Santa Fe RR, becoming depot agent for Longdale OK. As stated he and his dad built a house - which still stands occupied - and he married Hazel Marie Linn, whose family had also moved to Western OK from Missouri. Their first daughter was stillborn, but they raised 3 sons to honorable manhood - Robert Linn (1927-current), William Dean (1931-2000), and Gerald Francis (1935-1977). Bill became mayor of Longdale & he & Hazel's house was the first in town to have electricity. He bought the local lumberyard during the depression while continuing to be the depot agent for the Santa Fe RR. He then became the depot agent for Canton OK in about 1946, then Pratt KS, then San Angelo TX. He retired from the Santa Fe in 1968. He lost a leg to a blood clot in 1973 and passed away in 1979. Hazel passed in 1993.

Bill & Hazel's oldest son, Robert Linn, graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1951, serving in the Korean War. He left the service and ended his career in commercial AC as president of a manufacturing company in Missouri. He and his wife have raised 4 children and enjoy 8 grandchildren.

Their youngest son, Gerald (Gary), served in the Air Force and Vietnam, reaching the rank of colonel before passing of cancer in 1977. He is survived by his wife, 2 children, and 4 grandchildren in CO.

Their middle son, William Dean Allsman, was my father.
Have you had any luck regarding George Davidson of Jessamine Co., Ky.? I have the same info. as you from the courthouse and am stuck on Daniel Davidson who married Mary Enochs., daughter of Thomas Enochs and Nancy Bryan. I thought for a while George might be Daniel's father but after reading the will gave up on that. Now am wondering if he could be an older brother? George's children including Richard (War of 1812) are buried at Carlisle, In. on part of my family farm in the Hackett cemetery and also the Davidson cemetery which was destroyed by the farmer who bought that piece of land. However, Daniel and Mary's tombstones were salvaged and I have them. Be glad to share what info. I have. My great grandfather was Thomas Enochs Davidson, son of Daniel and Mary Enochs Davidson.

Just to be clear, the Andrew I believe to be my g-g-g-g-granddad is Andrew Alsman (1748-1858, SAR P-102974), also listed as Andrew Altman (1748-1858, DAR A132856), of the 4th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, who settled in Jessamine Co KY, then in Sullivan Co IN and is buried near Paxton, Sullivan County, IN. His DAR record and SAR record both list Sullivan County Indiana as his place of death.

I am aware that some make a connection with the Salsman & Saltzman surnames, going back to my uncle's footwork in PA and in Baden Germany, but I can find no listing for those surnames in the regimental records and I am focused on the names listed with the DAR & NSSAR.

Another name I've come across in my research is 'Andreas Uelsmann', Andreas being German for Andrew. If spelling was not standardized it might easily be written Andrew Alsman. It seems easier to transcribe it as Alsman than to transcribe Saltzman as Alsman, or at least as easy.

I have found no listing of a Salsman, Saltzman, etc in any regimental records but I am aware that there was no standardized spelling and that he may have been illiterate. That being the case, and having an association with the same regiment, the Alomon may be the same Andrew. Do we know that it is not? There was no standardized spelling.

The 'Andrew Alomon' I found listed in the same regiment (4th Pennsylvania Line) - from the regimental records - may very well not be the same fellow, as you point out. But it's at least a happy coincidence.

I'm not pursuing the 'Alomon' thread, I just happened upon it. I haven't seen an Alomon spelling anywhere else. If it's a red herring that's fine.

I'd be interested in any additional info - Thanks Tracey ;)

Late to the game, but glad to be here.

I live in Texas and am descended from 'Old Andrew' [whom we in our corner of the family believe to have been named Andrew Henry Alsman (sp?), but online I have seen as "Andrew J Alsman"]. Old Andrew was my g-g-g-g-grandfather, descended through Aaron (IL), William Paris (IN/MO), Winfield Scott (OK/MO), Willie Edward (OK), and William Dean (OK/TX) - all with 2 l's since at least Aaron. My uncle & I have been to Old Andrew's burial site near Paxton IN in Sullivan County. We/I have also visited numerous Civil War battlefields where William Paris' regiment, the 35th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, fought, including Pea Ridge, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, & Resaca.

I just mess with this stuff on the internet, but my Uncle, Robt Linn, is the real geneologist, visiting co courthouses, combing through records, and even visiting Baden Germany insearch of Old world records on Andrew.

I'd be happy to share info with any of you and gain the benefit of what you have to offer. I hope to meet some of you sometime.
It's been a long while since I've done any genealogy searching, and my files are still packed from a relocation, but I wanted to answer this so you won't continue to go down the wrong path (or rather-- up the wrong branch).

The Andrew you found in PA in 1780 would not be the one you descend from. Andrew "Allsman" (also Alsman, Altsman) is first found with that particular spelling in KY in 1810. Prior to that, he was in the same location but as Andrew SALTSMAN (or Salsman, etc.). Andrew SALTSMAN was in KY by around the early 1780s---you'll find that he gave a lot he owned in Frankfort, KY, to be part of the state capital (without digging out my files, I think that year was 1784 or so).

What you have about the PA Andrew "Aloman" is from someone's research who did NOT know of the Saltsman > Altsman/Allsman/Alsman name "change" that occurred 1809/1810 (in the 1810 census and forever more, he was Altsman/Allsman/Alsman, but in 1809 and earlier--yearly tax records for same location)--he was Saltsman/Salsman, etc. )

Tracey
TabBaldwin@aol.com

I am the g-g-g-g-grandson of Andrew Alsman from Baden Germany (1748-1858), descended through his son Aaron Allsman (1797-1864), grandson William Paris Allsman (IN/MO - 1831-1894), Winfield Scott Allsman (MO/OK), Willie Edward Allsman (OK), and William Dean Allsman (OK/TX).

My uncle and I visited Andrew's burial site near Paxton IN several years ago.

I would like to share info with any of you.

In our corner of the family we also have a tradition of Andrew living to an advanced age, and of the spelling shifting from one L to two around 1840, then back to one L around 1860.
