How to find records of slaves acquired in Louisville, Jefferson Co?

I'm trying to found out where to look for records of a slave that was acquired in Louisville, Jefferson Co. sometime between 1832 and 1845. Neither the slave owner (HAMILTON SMITH) nor his wife owned slaves before moving to Louisville in 1832. HAMILTON SMITH and his wife were born and raised in New England, so I've ruled out the possibility that the slave was inherited and haven't looked at any wills. The slave in question [LEAH (LEIA) GREEN(E)]was born in Virginia about 1805-1816. I've looked through the Deed index for the relevant period and can't find anything for HAMILTON SMITH at all. Can anyone suggest where I should look? Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, HAMILTON SMITH was a prominent lawyer in Louisville & best friends with Salmon P. Chase.
