Thanks very much for your reply. The link you provided will be helpful for some of my earlier research. I had called the Jefferson County Clerk's Office. The person I spoke to said there were no general indexes to the marriage records, only a groom and bride index in the front of each book (which had records for 1 year or maybe less). She also indicated that I could find the record in the index for each actual book, but had to make copies from the microfilm. I asked if I could see the record itself in the book to verify that it was the correct persons before using the microfilm, and she said NO. From her description, I don't understand how these records are organized. I have done research in many other Kentucky counties and am used to the idea of the marriage licenses bound in books with an index in the front of each book. Some counties have general indexes that cover many, many years in one index (either in book form or on a computer). Sometimes the general/master indexes are created by the Clerk's Office (Warren, Pike, Barren). Sometimes they are created by private genealogists (Allen, Simpson). Isn't there any general index for Jefferson? If I had to find a marriage for a John J. Jones who married between 1948 and 1955, what would I have to do? Thanks for any advice.
