I'm so glad to find this thread!

I'm a direct descendant of John Farmer and Icy Frost through their son, Houston (John -> Houston -> David Graham -> ).

I am also a direct descendant of Kizzie Ward (1887-1965) and James Browning in this same area, but I'm completely stuck on Kizzie! Is there any chance Kizzie connects into the Ward family in the original post? She was the daughter of John H Ward and Elizabeth Hensley.

I would be so grateful to share info on either of these lines! lizjackman@gmail.com or Member Connect here, at your convenience.

NOTE: I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS INDIVIDUAL. JUST POSTING THE OBITUARY ON VIOLET DRAKE FROM THE HAMILTON (OH) JOURNAL-NEWS 10/20/09

Violet Ezell Simpson Drake passed away October 17, 2009 at the Atrium in Middletown, OH. She was born Violet Ezell Simpson in Jackson County, KY on August 25, 1927, the daughter of Herman and Eunice Simpson. Violet married her beloved husband, John Hodges Drake VI on March 28, 1949. Violet and John were married for 58 years. Her husband preceded her in death on October 4, 2007 but they remained bound by love and are again together side by side in the presence of their Lord and Savior. Mrs. Drake was an accomplished musician and she chose to use her talents to serve others through her Christian ministry. She served at various times throughout her life as organist or pianist for the families of St. Clair Avenue Baptist, Immanuel Baptist and Faith United Church of Christ. Even after she retired, she continued to play for services at the Fairfield Pavillion provided by the Fairfield Church of the Nazarene. She touched countless lives with her music playing for services and weddings throughout the community. Mrs. Drake also served the community by working as the assistant administrator of the Butler County Care Facility from 1972 until her retirement in 1997. In 1997, Mrs. Drake was honored for her lifetime of service to the residents of Butler County. Mrs. Drake is survived by two daughters, Karen L. (John) Pond of Birmingham, AL and Elizabeth A. (Tim) Peters of Hamilton, OH; three sons, John "Hodge" (Diane) Drake of Clarksville, OH, David W. (Lanita) Drake of Fairfield, OH and Stephen Drake of Fairfield. Mrs. Drake was blessed to have 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Drake had two sisters, June Winkler and Vernell Baecker; and three brothers, Harold Simpson, Vernon Simpson and Wayne Simpson, all of Hamilton. Mrs. Drake was preceded in death by her parents; brother Kenneth Ward and a daughter Susan Lynn Drake. Upon her retirement in 1997 from the Butler County Care Facility, Mrs. Drake was quoted as saying, "It is, after all, what we give of ourselves that gives people who are lonely and hurting the security and compassion they need... and we will all need one day." It is with these words in mind that the children of Mrs. Drake would like to offer our sincerest thanks to the employees of Avalon at the Atrium, Davita Dialysis, and the Fairfield Pavillion for the same compassion and security offered to our mother. The family suggests memorial contributions to Butler County Care Facility Residents Activities, 1800 Princeton Road, Hamilton, OH 45011. Funeral services will be held at Webb Noonan Funeral Home, Ross Avenue at South "D" Street, Hamilton, at 2pm on October 22, 2009 with Pastor Dan McDowell officiating.
John MURPHY, Sand Gap whittler

I'm looking for any first hand info on my uncle, John Murphy (my namesake) who lived in Sand Gap. I recall visiting as a child, but don't have much info to go on. I should've listened more when my parents told me about him as a child. He was probably born around the turn of the 20th century...maybe a little later.

I remember he whittled and carved amazing things like small plow and oxen hanes replicas, and always had a bunch of "whirlygigs" and other cool stuff he'd create out of bent tin, many from old tin cans. He had a workshop by the house that'd he'd do all his carving in. I recall that he lived up on top of the mountain and had an aluminum or iron gate to get into his yard. The yard itself was pretty bare, mostly sandstone with little grass. He had an outhouse that sat on top of a crevice in the rocks...that was so cool. :)

I wish I had more to go on, and plan on interviewing some family members in the near future, but wanted to throw a feeler out there and see if any Jackson County, Kentucky folks were familiar with my Uncle John first hand. Thanks in advance.

--Doug Lamb

Spiratewing,

Harrison Patrick was a brother to my grandmother, Laura Frances Murphy. She died before I was born, but I remember seeing Harrison Patrick once or twice at the Murphy reunions we used to attend every year in Richmond, KY when I was a kid in the 1970's. It was always held at the city park on Lancaster Avenue. I never really paid attention to the "old people" but now I wish I had. Here's what I have:

138. Harrison Patrick7 Murphy (Nancy Jemima6 Webb, Christopher Columbus5, Joseph4, William3,
Elisha2, John1) was born 1905 in Jackson Co. ,KY, and died 1981 in Florida. He married (1) Ethel Taylor,
daughter of Enoch Taylor and Dora Kelly. She was born Jul 24, 1914, and died Jun 30, 1986 in Fruitland Park,
FL. He married (2) Bertha Bowlin Sep 1926. She was born 1906, and died 1936 in Madison Co., KY.
More About Harrison Patrick Murphy:
Burial: 1981, Red Hill Cem. College Hill, Madison Co., KY
Children of Harrison Murphy and Ethel Taylor are:
369 i. Dora Ellen8 Murphy.
370 ii. William Ray Murphy.
371 iii. Aileen Murphy, born 1936.

This info came from a PDF document with some very well documented stuff, but I'm not sure who the author is/was. I'll be happy to send it to you. E-mail me at spotcheck at gmail dot com if you'd like.

I'm really amateur at genealogy, but have been working mostly on the Lamb line. However, I want to learn more about the Murphy side of things as well. Drop me an e-mail if I can be of assistance.

--Doug Lamb

From things I have found here today, I thought she might not be his first wife. And given the years suspected that he might have been a widower when they met.

I just checked my ancestry information for Josephine Rose Phillips and i find that her death certificate is in the name of Phillips. I am assuming ? this means that Phillips was her legal name as a widow and that she had no other husbands after his death. I had never heard of any other husband.

Riki

Hawkins McQueen was my great-grandfather's (Samuel Rose) brother-in-law. . Hawkins was married to one of his sisters. Samuel Rose was born about 1863/1865. I have a picture of my great-grandfather, his brother Tommy Rose, and Hawkins McQueen taken at 'grandpa's' still. They were in Rockcastle County.

Help.
Looking for a Annie HAYS BICKNELL from Jackson Co.
Probably born between 1850 and 1870 or so. Had some BICKNELL children (boys?).
Family lore says she married a Wade LIVESAY from Rockcastle Co. about 1900 or 1901. Had a son Willis ca 1901 and then supposedly died during pregnancy/childbirth ca 1903. Grave or other death info has not been found.
Some are working on the LIVESAY family and would like to identify the family and previous marriage of Annie.
Can anyone help??
Thanks
