Looking for husband and children of Edna Griffin born 1784 in Virginia, migrated with her husband and children to Henderson County, Kentucky around 1825. She was widowed by 1830. Known children are Joseph B. Griffin (born c. 1807, Va.), James W. Griffin (b. c. 1818 in Va. - married Mary Jane Norment)) and Martha A. (b. c.1823 in Va. - married Charles W. Davis).
Herron Heritage - new material online

This will be of great interest to western Kentucky researchers, especially those of Webster, Hopkins, and Henderson Counties.

Trudy Herron Moneyhan has made a very generous contribution to the Webster County KYGenWeb site - her excellent work, "Herron Heritage", in which she traces the Herrin/Herron surname from Anglo-Saxon Britain, to Virginia and later to western Kentucky and Webster/Hopkins Counties.

Trudy's history is much more than names, dates and places. She weaves her family story into events of the times and makes it exciting to read, even if you don't have Herron ancestry. Trudy has also made good use of illustrations and documents in "Herron Heritage". In the second two files, Trudy shares with us stories of the family as they went about their daily lives; she has a real gift for writing - each of us can identify with the story Trudy has written about her last visit to the old Herron homeplace in Dixon. And Trudy ends her work with Harold Utley's great story about the infamous Harp brothers, "Frontier Justice".

Trudy's work is in the form of three files (two of them quite large) in the pdf format. You will need to have or download a copy of the free Acrobat Reader program in order to view the files. Instructions are given as to downloading the free program.

The two large files take a few moments to open completely, even if you have a high-speed internet connection. But you can begin reading while the remainder of the file loads.

I sincerely hope all of you will be able to read and enjoy Trudy's splendid work, which you can find at:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kywebste/families/herrin/h...

Thank you Trudy for sharing your research with us!

Can you guys see how excited I am about this?? I'm going to go read the whole thing again right now.

Carole Palmer
Webster County KYGenWeb
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kywebste/
Webster County KY USGenWeb Archives
http://www.usgwarchives.org/ky/webster/webster.html
My Personal Genealogy Site
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cpalmer/index.html
my mother's ring had 'J.W. & B. U. Dec. 29, 1907' inscribed inside. The thing is, neither of my parents had those initials. My father's family was from Henderson and his family had Whitledges and Weldons. Is there a marriage from that day in Henderson that would explain the ring? I assume it was passed down to dad. My folks didn't marry until 1933.

Children, Charles Albert, William Estell, Gilbert (Gilley), Sophia, Bessie. Step daughter Lula Sherwood.

There was previous confusion linking this John McMullen to Elmira Robards. It may have been a house fire, or an accident of some kind. The fact that they both died on the same day leads me to believe there must me a story behind it. They are buried in Denton Cemetery, Henderson.

My Kentucky ancestors lived on farms near Hebbardsville and Zion from 1820-1920. Was there a newspaper that carried birth, marriage, legal and death announcements about these rural folks? If copies of these newspapers are available on microfilm, are they housed at the Henderson Library? Or, are there compilations of these articles in books in the library or within the Historical Society?

Sandra W. Kennedy

Hello, I am hoping that someone can help me locate Kenneth and Kathleen Maynard. They had a son named Gregory and a daughter named Mignon (sp?) He was a Church of Christ minister in the early 1960's in Parkersburg, WV. He was also in Hollywood, FL and also MI and IN.
The last known address for Kathleen was 946 Trail Drive, Henderson, KY. I have reason to believe that Kenneth is deceased. But I do not know for sure.
Our church is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and we are trying to find a picture of Kenneth to make our list complete.
If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be great.
Thanks and God Bless!

I am a descendant of the ROBERT PRUITT, who died in Henderson County in 1825, and would like to share information with other people researching this line. Has anyone determined his parentage? His son, James, said his father was born in North Carolina. Can we assume Granville County? Some think that Robert was a younger brother of DOAK PRUITT, who was from Granville and moved to Henderson County in 1808. Has anyone found a link between these two men? Both named their first born boy and girl James and Elizabeth. Was this in honor of their parents?

Sanford & Ella (Pruitt) Cosby married in Henderson, KY, in 1885. They had three children, Melvin, Anita & Waverly. The family moved to Texas, where Sanford died in 1904. Melvin died in 1907. When the 1910 census was taken, the two younger Cosby children were living with their maternal grandparents, James A. & Emaline (Robards) Pruitt in Henderson. Also listed was Ella's half sister, Alice, widow of John Clifton Hicks. Alice's last name was given as Cosby. Where was Ella, who didn't die until 1949? What is Alice's Cosby connection? I need help sorting this out.

I am interested in any information surrounding John Henry Barret or Barrett's contributions to the L&N Railroad.

John Henry Barrett was a native of Louisa County, Virginia and was born on 04 Feb 1818. His father, Peter Straghan Barrett and his mother, Matilda Winston were born in the same county.

At the age of 17 he bade adieu to his paternal home and set out for Kentucky to join his brother, Alexander Barrett, who had preceded him two years.

He arrived in Henderson in December 1835 and accepted a position with his brother who was largely engaged in the purchase of tobacco and merchandizing.

December 1839, four years after his arrival in Henderson, he married Miss Susan D. Rankin. Susan D. Rankin Barrett died in 1851.

On 14 Sep 1852 John Henry Barrett married Mary Augusta Haddock of Smithland.

John H. Barrett was the main instrument in bringing about the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.

If you should have any information on his contibutions, I would like to hear from you.

Thank you!

Ages might be off though.I didn't know if they had a list of orphanages back then and perhaps a list of children that were there.I have tried finding any bit of info on him and so far hitting a brickwall.
Can anyone lead me in the right direction...
Thank you..

The SAMUEL BUGG that married ELIZABETH BILBO in Mecklenburg Co. VA. was the son of SAMUEL BUGG & MARTHA YOUNG. SAMUEL & ELIZABETH BILBO BUGG migrated to Henderson Co. Ky. for the 1809 tax list. Their son Sherwood (proven in court case for guardianship) married Rosannah Long and they moved to Hickman Co. Ky. Their daughter Martha Ann married James Mastin Stephens in Hickman Co. KY. Martha and James' son Sherwood was my great grandfather. Alot has been written on Sherwood Bugg and Elizabeth Bilbo that is wrong and I'm trying to get the word out so it will be correct.
Mrs. Sarah Majors

While looking for information on my Majors family in Henderson Co., KY, I came across a Mrs. Sarah Majors in several references. After checking other orginial records I could find her, I did a check on-line check which was of little value.

She appears first in the 1846 & 1847 tax records in Henderson Co., KY as Mrs. Sarah Majors with 5 children and 200 acres of land. If she appears in the 1848 records, I could not find her. In 1849 she appears as Mrs. Sarah Majors and only 4 children with the same the amount of land.

Mrs. Sarah Majors died sometimes in either May or June of 1849. This fact can be based on court records. Court Order Book G on Page 474 lists that a Sarah Majors estate was to be appraised. The estate was inventory list and the sale of item is listed in the Inventory and Appr. Book C on July 14, 1849.

The only Mrs. Sarah Majors that could possible match on Ancestry.com is a Sarah Wolf(e) who married a Greenberry Majors both Jefferson and Lincoln Counites, KY in 1795. I can not find that this Greenberry Majors moved to Henderson Co., KY.

Has anyone in their search found a Mrs. Sarah Majors. Or could she be a missing mother to one of the Henderson Co., KY's Majors family?

My gggrandfather is John D. Langley, born about 1851, married Mary E. (maiden name unknown). They had a son named George Dillard (born June 1877).
I found a John D. Langley in the 1860 census for Henderson, Ky. listed as the son of Samuel W and Elizabeth S., (with several brothers a sisters) that was born abt. the same time (1851) as my John D. Langley. Does anyone have any idea if this is the same John, or have any ideas on how I can find out if they are the same?
Any help would be greatfully appreciated. Thank you very much.

Elijah King

I am not a King descendant. I would like to know where the early Henderson county pioneer, Elijah King, was from. I am trying to track the descendants of an Elijah King who married Levinia Terry, the daughter of Benjamin Terry, Sr. of Pittsylvania Co. VA. Levinia was the aunt of the Robert Terry who married Nancy Hopkins Smith, niece of General Samuel Hopkins. Robert and Nancy settled in Henderson Co KY by 1807, as I have copies of letters written by Robert from Henderson back to VA.
