My grandfather, William George Estes, died in Harlan Co. Nov 29 1971 and was buried in the D.L. Creech Cemetery in Cumberland, according to his death certificate. He and my grandmother were divorced before 1920 and he remarried. While living in Harlan County, I believe he was married to Josie Hatfield before 1930, and after 1930 to Crocie (Crosha) Brewer, both of whom were from Hancock Co. and may have been cousins. Family rumor said that he never divorced Josie before marrying Crocie.
He had at least one child with Jocie (pronounce Joycie), and one with Crocie, and one more that I'm not sure who the mother is.
Virginia Estes was born (probably to Jocie) in 1918 in Hancock Co., from her obituary.
Josephine Estes was born in 1923 an died Nov 2 1979 and was married to Andrew Jackson, possibly in Harlan County.
Evelyn was born in 1931 to Crocie in Harlan Co and was married to a man named Jake. Apparently there were some children, at least one daughter. She divorced Jake and married "an old man", one source says a doctor, who she took care of until she died. One family source sayd that a robber broke into their home and she was nearly beheaded in front of her children, murdered. I have absolutely no more information, except that by simple addition this would have had to be after 1950 and possibly after 1960. I don't know where.
Here are my questions.
1. Does anyone know if there is a cemetery list for the D.L. Creech cemetery? Where is the cemetery and how do I get there? Is it private and can I see it from the road?
2. Does anyone remember anything about a murder like that?
3. Are there newspapers that might have obituaries for local folks? Are they on microfilm someplace? Is there an obituary file someplace?
4. Does anyone know of this Andrew Jackson?
5. Are there any really elderly people who "know everything about everyone" that I might be able to contact about my grandfather and his 3 daughters. I probably have some cousins out there someplace.
Answers to any questions I've forgotten to ask gratefully accepted.
Thanks so much in advance.
Bobbi Estes
