John Ed Hancock, church and community leader and retired business man, died Mon 17 Dec [1984] in Louisville at Norton-Children’s Hospital. Hancock was the former owner of Greensburg Cable Television and a veteran of the US Nay, having served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was active in community activities and was elected to the city council in 1971. While on the City Council he acted as Water Commissioner. For more than 25 years he had been an Elder of the Greensburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church and also was an active member of several church boards at the local and synod levels. Hancock, the son of Sarah Shuffett Hancock and the late R.B. Hancock, was born in Green Co. 7 Jan 1926 and received his education in the schools here. Jun 16, 1950 he was united in marriage to Tenabel Lowe who survives. In addition to his wife and his mother, he is survived by a brother, Bas Hancock, Greensburg; a sister, Juanita Milby, Somerset; 4 nieces: Jan Cox, Somerset; Marytena Berry, Lexington; Laura Hancock, Nashville, Tenn; Sarah Hancock, Greensburg; and 1 nephew, John Hancock, Greensburg. He is also survived by a great-niece, Bethany Thompson and a great-nephew, Micah Thompson, both of Somerset, and many other relatives and friends. The memorial service for John Ed Hancock was at 2 pm Wed. 19 Dec at the Greensburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Melvin Orr and the Rev. Gleason Bloyd officiating. Burial was in Greensburg Cem. Active pallbearers were Barney Shuffett, Shirldean Lobb, Calvin Paxton, Russell Phillips, Tommy O’Banion, Harold Hudgins, Billy Hancock and Jodie DeSpain. Honorary pallbearers were Denver Wells, Eugene Ronald, W.L Parrott, Sr., Joe Shuffett, Will Ed Shuffett, Rollin Shuffett, Henry Kessler, Bernard Perkins, Emery Jones, Jerry Curry, Bruce Milby, and James Christie. Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
