The McCrady Family
The McCrady (MacCreadie) Family came originally from Scotland, where they were first found in Galloway in the 17th century. They seem to have been a sept — or branch — of the older Clan MacRae, which when first heard of was settled at the Clunes, near Beauty; but who in the 14th century moved across Ross-shire to Kintale. Here, settled in the mountain-encircled Glen Shiel, they commanded loch Alsh from their castle of Eilean Donan. The early form of their name was MacRath, was a baptismal term meaning “Son of Grace” — or of “Good Fortune”.
Unfortunately, the name of the first McCrady to come to America is not known to us. The family is first heard from in North Carolina in1802, when a son, Andrew, was born there. Evidently, a part of the Family remained in that general area, because we learn of an Edward McCrady (B 4-8-1833 in Charlestown, South Carolina) serving in the Civil War, and later writing “The History of South Carolina”.
Meanwhile, the above mentioned Andrew McCrady was taken by his (unknown) parents across the mountains into Tennessee, where what were almost certainly two other brothers were born. Later, these three moved northward into Grayson County, Kentucky
