TN Vital Records -
The Vital Statistics Law, established by Chapter 30, Public Acts of 1913, was passed and became effective January 1, 1914, for statewide registration of birth & death registration.
The Tennessee Office of Vital Records retains birth records from 1914. (NOTE: Beginning in 2014, birth records will begin transferring to the Tennessee State Library & Archive since we retain the birth records for 100 years. Then they will transfer on a year by year schedule.) Death records are only retained by our office for 50 years. Once the death records become 50 years old they are transferred to the Library & Archive also. Presently we have death records from 1960 to the present.

Once the records are transferred to the L & A, they become true public records and anyone can access them.
