BROWN, Arabia (Elizabeth) W.8384
"13 Sept. 1832, Garrard, KY Arabia Brown of said county, aged 76 since 27 Nov 1831, declares he enlisted for six months in 1777 in Bedford Co., VA, under Capt. Charles Watkins. The company was raised to assist the inhabitants in struggles with the Indians and consisted of fifty men. They were promised 40 shillings per month. They marched immediately to Kentucky and arrived at Boonsborough. He was stationed there under Col. Daniel Boone. Boone was taken prisoner by the Indians on Licking River where the thirty men were making salt, but shortly afterward got away and returned to the fort and again commanded. Brown served for eight months instead of six. He was allowed but one single pint of corn per day for three months and had to grind it himself on a hand mill. The balance of the time he had nothing furnished him but meal (probably meat), and there was nothing else to give them. He served eight months because they could not get back to Virginia until Squire Boone, a brother of Daniel Boone, was dispatched to Virginia to get more men. His captain remained in Kentucky until the fall of the year and then returned to Virginia and paid him and the others their wages in Continental money. He moved to Kentucky upwards of forty yeard ago and lived in Garrard County before it was a county, and on the same place where he now lives more than forty years."

"13 Sept. 1832. Garrard Co., KY Ansel Goodman of Russell Co., KY, aged 80, declares he has known Arabia Brown since the period of his enlistment. They enlisted at the same time under Capt. Charles Watkins. Every fact stated by Brown up to the time Goodman left the station to go to Blue Licks where he was taken prisoner by the Indians."

14 Aug. 1848. Garrard Co., KY Elizabeth (X) Brown declares she is a widow of Arabia Brown who served on the frontiers many months and likewise served some time under Capt. Dooley and went toward Portsmouth between nine and twelve months before Cornwallis surrendered. She was married in May 1778 and he died 13 March 1844. Her oldest child Stephen Brown was born 24 Jun 1779. After that her husband served under Capt. Dooley who was her brother."

"Arabia Brown of Garrard Co., KY, private in the company of Capt. Watkins in the Virginia line for eight months from 1777, was placed on the Kentucky pension roll at $26.66 per annum under the Act of 1832. Certificate 4709 was issued 26 Jan 1833."

"Ellizabeth Brown of Garrard Co., KY, widow of Arabia Brown who died 13 March 1844, private in the company of Capt. Watkins in the Virginia line for eight months, was placed on the Louisville, KY roll at $26.66 per annum. Certificate 10787 under the Act of 1838 and Joint Resolution of 23 Jan 1845, 8704 under the Acts of 1843 and 1844, and 5259 under the Act of 1848 were issued 12 Dec 1849."

I am a descendant of Arabia Brown, Sr. I'm researching my lineage. I can trace the Browns back to Arabia Brown, Sr, but I am unable to discover the parents of Arabia Brown, Sr. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Best regards,

John Brown

The Capt. Watkins that is referred to in Arabia Brown's pension application is Capt. Charles Gwatkins of Bedford. He did indeed lead a company of primarily Bedford Co. men to the relief of Ft. Boonesboro. There is a website, www.regoodman.com/ansel.htm which says that a Thomas Brown may be the father of Arabia Brown. I believe that this website may give you some information that can be pursued in Bedford records.

Whatever you find, I hope that you continue to post on the Garrard county board.

Good luck

Thanks Sandy. I'll pursue the Thomas Brown trail. Do you know if Thomas Brown was also from Virginia?

Are you also a descendant of Arabia Brown?

Best regards,John Brown

Not kin to the Browns. I was actually researching Ft. Boonesboro and Boone's capture at Blue Lick when I ran across the pension application. I looked up some old notes and I had written that Capt. Dooley mentioned in the application as a brother of Elizabeth Dooley Brown may have been Capt. Thomas Dooley. I found his name in another pension application from Bedford Co.

Whenever I find a document connected to Garrard county families, I post in hopes it will help someone.

I would start in Bedford Co., Virginia. In Ansel Goodman's pension application he states that he enlisted Jul 1777 with about 50 others of Bedford Co. under Capt. Charles Gwatkins (pronounced Watkins). Ansel was married to Edith Brown, d/o of Thomas Brown, Bedford and it is speculated that Arabia was also a son of Thomas Brown.

Bedford Co. Deed Book
Ansel Goodman 27 Aug 1786 from Raba (Arabia) Brown & Elizabeth Brown, 150 acres.

Also check Lunenberg Co., Virginia.

You may want to first check the library of Virginia before you start your trip at:

http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/mil/index.htm

This will give you: Military Records and Resources. I have not visited the library, but it is located at 800 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA

Best regards, Carroll
