John Wallace, b. 1748 Bucks co., PA; d. 1814 Fayette co., KY

John Wallace served in the Revolutionary War in the 5th PA Regiment under Col. Anthony Wayne, as proven in DAR records. His DAR Ancestor number is A119916; go to dar.org for more info.

His will, dated 20 June 1813, was filed and later probated in Fayette county, KY. His wife was Jane Finley who appears to have died shortly after the will was written.

Does anyone have information on when he arrived in Kentucky? Some researchers think his older children were born in Kentucky as early as 1779, but since he was still in the army in PA, I feel that is highly unlikely.

The children named in his will: John Wallace, James F. Wallace, Abraham Hill Wallace, Andrew S. Wallace, Joseph Wallace, Jane Wallace, Margaret Wallace, Martha Wallace and Mary Hill, who is mostly likely the wife of Thomas Hill by 1813.

A son who is found in some records but not in his will is:
Alexander Wallace, b. 4 July 1785.

Any clues on this family will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Not my line; doing this for a friend.

Kathy Hudson
Kailua, Hawaii

Hello!

I hope you're still out there. I came across 1907 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps of Lexington, KY, and this sheet shows the Jung Brewing Co. at the end of Lugart Ave. (intersects with Limestone Street).
http://kdl.kyvl.org/catalog/xt72fq9q2d7r_6?

Google Earth labels the street as Luigart Ave. It appears as though the brewery building is no longer there, just a pile of rubble.

Bob Gaudio
James Ellis, husb. of Lydia F. Honican, father of Ollie

My great, great grandmother was Lydia Francis Honican (b. Nov 1855 in Fleming, KY; d. Nov 1938 in Nicholasville, Jessamine, KY), daughter of Christian F. Honican (b. 1824 in Fleming, KY) and Mary Paynter (b. 1835 in Harrison, KY). In Sep 1877 Lydia married James Walton of Fleming, KY. They both lived in Milford, Bracken, KY at the time, and the marriage was registered in Robertson, KY. On the marriage record, Lydia’s surname is Ellis. Lydia’s daughter Ollie, my great grandmother, was born in Oct 1875 in Lexington, KY-- two years before her mother married Walton. Ollie’s father as listed on her death certificate is James Ellis. I assume Lydia was previously married to Ellis before 1875, but I have not been able to locate any record of this. I found an online reference to Lydia being married to William Henry Harrison Ellis (b. abt 1845 in KY), but upon further research I found that he was married to another Lydia (Lydia Fowler), so I think someone might have mixed up the two Lydias. If anybody has information on the James Ellis who was my great grandmother’s biological father, I would love to hear from you.

Here is a link to a good photo of the grave stone.

http://billiongraves.com/pages/record/AlexanderCArnett/28036...

His birth date is difficult to read in the photo, but his death date is clear, 1864. Presumably he was killed in the Civil War.

Living persons for various reasons may not want to be identified in public genealogies. Below is what I have:

Elsie Mary Stoll married Dr. Robert Milligan Coleman. Dr. Coleman was son of the Dr. Benjamin Coleman and Isabelle Milligan, daughter of the president of the College of the Bible (then a part of Transylvania). Robert M. Coleman graduated from the University of Virginia, and served a two-year internship with New York’s Bellevue Hospital. Robert M. and Elsie Mary had one daughter, Willy Cromwell.

Willy Cromwell Coleman married William Chenault Smith, a graduate of the University of Kentucky Law School, who was a local manager for the Standard Oil Co. In 1934, at age 26, Willy died “while handling a pistol.” (Lex. Herald, 24 May 1934) William Smith later moved to Louisville, where he died in 1993. The Smith’s had one daughter, Elsie Coleman Smith. Elsie married Thomas Allison Ray. After having two daughters and a son, Elsie divorced Ray, and later married William Kimball Underwood (no children).
So have you exhausted Eddie (female) Bradley Stoll descendants? Eddie was born to J. Will Stoll and Julia Woodcock on 9 Febuary 1912, she is listed with mother in the household of her grandparents John and Eddie Stoll in 1920. She married John Clark Ware, in 194O census with husband and two children Lucy age 6 (b. 23 Dec 1933), and John Clark Ware 6 mos.(b. 2 Nov 1939) She (Eddie Bradley nee Stoll Clark) died of burns received in an accident on 10 August 1945. Her son John Clark Ware, Jr. died 11 Oct 1999. I don't know if daughter married or whom. I'm not affiliated with the family, so I don't know of surviving children of John Clark Ware,Jr. but can obtain the obituary of he and his mother Eddie if needed. Please let me know.

Have not heard back yet. I have info on Robert Milligan, three boxes, including genealogy but the info I have for the lines coming down stopped at Elsie Stoll and was trying to determine if the family stopped or if there are descendants of Robert Milligan alive today. I am working on a book project about him.....
Becci,, I hope this finds you after ten years! I research the Milligan family of Lexington. Elsie Stoll Coleman was married to Robert Milligan Coleman, who was the grandson of Robert And Eleanor Milligan, he a professor.
Elsie and Robert Coleman had a daughter, willie Cromwell Smith, married to William Chenault Smith. Willie died 1934. They had a daughter, Elsie. That is where my research ends. Can you fill in details? Same line as yours?
My interest is in Robert Milligan. Have boxes of research on him. I went to Milligan College which is named for him. Email me at milligan95 at yahoo.com
Thank you. The Kentucky info I had was from Joshua in the 1850 census saying he was born in KY. Then in 1855 & 60 he says NY. So, we'll just chalk it up to confusion.... Thank you again for your verification.

Hello Carla,
We are doing research on this family and are stuck at Phineas and Charlotte. We have information showing Caleb born in New York and Joshua, his twin, born in Kentucky. Obviously, mom wasn't in both places on the same day. Do you have info regarding the births in New York? I'd love to settle this one.
There was a James Duncan, married to a Margaret McQuillin, who was living in Lawrence Co., IN in 1838. He apparently sold his interest in a lot in Lexington that was his (or his wife's) share of the estate of an unnamed Mcquillan to one John M. McQuillen of Fayette County, KY. The deed was witnessed by my 3rd great-grandfather, Enoch Hampton, husband of Lucretia Duncan.

Could Margaret McQuillin and John M. McQuillen be siblings of your Thomas?

My real interest in this is discovering the relationship between James Duncan and Lucretia Duncan, and in discovering the parents of both Lucretia Duncan and Enoch Hampton, who married in Clark Co., KY in 1831. A James Duncan was surety on the marriage bond. Whether or not he was the same James Duncan who married Margaret McQuillin on 15 Jun 1837 in Fayette Co., I don't know.

Any information on these Duncans would be much appreciated!

Dear Trish,

Thank You so much for emailing me back and thank you for the time you have spent researching for me! I truly am grateful!

I am not sure where to begin. I know he was born in 1885 as every official record I have found shows 1885. Death Index as well as his death certificate. He died alone in San Diego and the family was never notified so the County buried him with funds taken from his assets which wasn't much. A probate was opened and closed but nothing of value.

I am not sure if he would have been old enough to have served in the Spanish American War as he would have been just a boy. I know that on the WW1 draft card, it shows rank of Corporal and mentions Signal Quartermaster. Surely this is either the Navy or the Army. I don't think the nAvy has a rank of Corporal. It shows National Guard also. I don't know what to make of it! I also found a James E Gregg in the 1910 Census in Honolulu serving aboard a Navy Ship and it says he was born in Kentucky but I am not sure this is my James Gregg. If he had served on board a Navy Ship during the 1910 Census, Why would he have registered for the draft in 1917?

I notice you found some Voter registration info! Wow, I have never seen this info before. Would you mind sharing a link to the site or place you found that information? I am not even sure I would know where to begin looking.

Yes, James did indeed move around often! I would love to know his movements and an insight into the kind of person he was. I feel so connected to my ancestors, having researched them. It almost seems like they are living to me.

IN 1919, My Grandparents, James Gregg and Belva headed to Point Barrow, Alaska aboard the Cutter Bear. About 20 miles off shore, the ship lodged itself in ice and was stuck. Belva went into labor with my Grandmother Virginia and was taken off the boat and escorted across the ice on skin boats. She arrived at Point Barrow and delivered Virginia in the home of Charles Brower. We are not sure what their calling was to Point Barrow except what info is listed on the 1920 Census. It lists their Employer as W.S.B.E. which I am not familiar with. I wonder if the B.E. stands for Bureau of Education?

Would you have any insight on where I could look for divorce papers, not knowing which county they divorced? I am more than certain it was California. Would the Bureau of Vital Statistics have this information?

I wonder if the Railroad would have any employment records on James Gregg? I am sure this is what took him to Havre, Montana in 1917. This is where he registered for the draft.

The biggest challenge I have come up against is the search for whereabouts of Marie Charlotte (Possibly Charlot). We know by the 1920 Census that she was listed as born in Oklahoma which agrees with family legend of her being a Native American.

I am sorry about all the questions, you have been so kind in your research. Should you be willing to help me further, I would be grateful! Take care, Jacoby

I believe his previous service is the Spanish-American War (around 1898). In the 1930 Fed Census the family is living in California > Imperial > Westmoreland > District 51 > 2
*note there are year of birth discrepancies in census and also on his WWI Draft Registration

1930
Gregg, James E. Head age 55 (1875) age at first marriage 42 yrs, born KY, Father France, Mother Oklahoma- he is a mechanic at a garage and Military for him is Sp. the others on the page have WW.

Wife- Belva is 40, age of first marriage 27, she is a chauffeur, school bus, Missouri, Missouri, Kentucky

Son James E., Jr. age 12 born Montana
Daughter Virgina age 10 born Alaska

--------------------------
California, Voter Registrations, 1900-1968
Return to Search Results Imperial County > 1920-1926 > 714
Tammarack Precinct
Mrs. Belva T. Gregg, Housewife, Republican, Brawley, California , Box 1575
James E. Gregg, Rancher, Republican, Brawley, California, Box 1575

Same county, address in California Voter Registration Records in 1928-1932
_____________________________________

James E. Gregg WWI Draft has him born in 1887 but born in Paris, KY so a wide variation on his date of birth.

From what I've read it is harder to research on Spanish American War Veterans, but not entirely impossible. The US Revenue Cutters (before birth of Navy) patrolled the water to protect the Klondike.

This site might help you in researching files of his service in Spanish American War. Since his previous service indicated was in Washington State, I would say he was around that Area possibly in the 1900 census (sure did move alot!)

Have you located their divorce records?
Who was the informant on the Death Certificate - a relative or a nursing home or hospital records person?
When you found his plot in the Cemetery, there should be a burial card of who purchased the plot, many list parents name and other pertinent information.

It's going to take some searching in 1940 as it's apparent they are divorced by this time, and son James is living the relatives Sullivan. But is indicated he lived in 1935 Harve, Montana. These ancestry hints are usually a hint created by others that have found them already and attached to their records. My first inclination would call the cemetery and have them give you the burial card info first, and then find where the divorce took place. It will yield more information as to where he could be possibly living in 1940 California or Montana most likely. Someone kept in touch or knew where to locate him upon Virginia's illness for him to come to see her before she died. As far as why he didn't keep in touch more, I saw the description on your Memorial on Find A Grave, probably this was the reason the family divorced and moved on.

http://www.spanamwar.com/geneaol2.htm
