JOHN. Burkesville, Cumberland County. Born near Chambersburg, PA, in which state he lived until the close of the Revolution; served in that war, and was at the fall of York, where he witnessed the surrender of Lord Cornwallis; removed to Kentucky at a very early date. "He wielded the axe that struck the first blow where now stands the proud city of Lexington, Kentucky... at the advanced age of 62 years he volunteered his services under Hopkins to be led once more, as a private soldier. Entering the army, as mentioned above, at the commencement of the revolution, he was appointed Lieutenant of his company, and was engaged at Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth, among other battles... As a member of the lower branch of our State Legislature, he was a firm friend of the head-right settlers south of Green River, and the first mover of that series of laws which have received the appellation of the Relief System... At the age of 54 he studied law as a profession...and arrived at the highest honor of his profession." He died at his home in Burkesville, 17 Feb. 1836, aged 86 years, and was given a military funeral on 18 Feb. 1836. C, 2 Mar. 1836.

Does anyone have information on Elizabeth Scott PREWITT wife of Reuben Prewitt and her daughter, Lucinda, after 1870? Reuben died during a leave at home in 1864, possibly killed by Confederat guerillas. Did Elizabeth remarry (which I suspect she did)? Her sons, William, Granville, and Alexander (Bud) were living in Monroe County in 1880. What happened to Lucinda?

My father was Gage Baker, youngest son of Robert and Florence (Riall) Baker.

How are we related?

I would like the photo. David Riall, son of Ben Riall III, has sent me some photos. I do have a photo of Ben and Rhoda. Perhaps it the same one. It looks like they are standing on a front porch and she is holding a book.

I have Ben's Civil War information from footnote.com. It can't be his entire record because what I have does not mention his first wife. So I would like his Civil War information also.

Do you know the names of Mary Elizabeth's parents?

Karen

Hi:
I was wondering if you could see if there is a marriage listed for Houston (Huston) Ray Miller and either Sukie/Suzy or Nancy Cummins. The married around 1827, I don't have a specific date.
Thank you very much,
Carole Beringer

My sister and I returned from our Cumberland County, Kentucky visit which was very successful. We found the marriage bond/liscense as well as notes from the mother of the groom (our grandfather Ed T Anderson) and the father of the bride (Our grandmother Laura B Neighbors) granting them permission to marry. The real jewel was the signature of our grandmother, Larua, on the bottom of her father's note. She was apparently the only one who could sign her name, as all others gave their mark.

Both the Library and the County Court House (old bulding in center of town square) have a wealth of documents. Deeds, Oil leases, mortages, marriage bonds, etc. Plan to stop by both places.

We found our Great Great paternal grandpartents, Samuel J and Juda Thrasher in the Rose of Sharon Cemetery and our Great Great Material grandparents, Henry B. and Louisa Neighbors in a small weeded cemetery off of Finley road near the old Bows School House cemetery. A number of Anderson kin were found in the Bows cemetery including George W. Anderson and several of his children including Charlie R Anderson as well as others. It appears that the orginal homestead is now under water of Dale Hallow Lake.

We stated at the Dale Hallow State Lodge which was very nice (not exactly cheap - but tolerable) and well located for searching the Kettle, Hegria, Sulpher Creek area.

Thanks to all of you who provided information in the past which made our trip so successfu.

If you plan to look for cemeteries in Cumberland make certain you get a copy of the 1991 Kentucky Highway Department Generaly Highway Map for Cumberland, it has symbols for the location of cemeteries and is the most comprehensive source I have found for cemetery physical location.

Ed Anderson (Willie J Anderson, Ed. T. Anderson, James Anderson (of Sulpher Creek 1797 - 1867))
eanderson@carolina.rr.com

Do you have any idea at all who the parents of Solomon Sr. were? I believe, through another of the Pruitt clan who is a trained historian, that he fled France because he was a Hugenot (sic). Their was a lot of Hugenots that settled in Virgina and was helped out by prosperous settlers. At the moment I can't remember where in Virginia. Are you thinking along this line or have you found some different information?
By the way, I am descended down from Solomon Jr.
Does your book tell who performed the marriages? I'm looking for Spencer Janes who formerly performed marriages in Adair County and I wondered if he continued to do so after he moved to Cumberland Co. sometime after 1850 and before 1860.
