I have ordered several pension records on Riddles, a Bond
and they are full of Cumberland Cnty names people who are
swearing that someone is who they say they are.

Does anyone know if there is a way to order whole reels of film on a certain co such as 5th Ky Calvary, without having to
order pension record on one person?????

Hi Lois. I have obtained Capt. Thomas Speed's book "The Union Regiments of KY". It lists roster's of all the companies of the 5th, including a regimental history. Many of my relatives are listed. As far as the Riddles are concerned, in Company E: Lt. Abijah C. Riddle, Farrier James M. Riddle, and Pvt's Joseph F. and Arthur J. Riddle. I do not see any Bond's listed for any Company in the 5th. There is a Liewllyn Bond listed in the roster of the 13th KY Cav. Co. F. which was recruited from same area. This might be your Elzy Bond. Some of my Smith's and Mackey's were in the same unit. You should be able to send for pension records with that info. Good luck! Beckie

Hi, Becky
I have Elzie Bond pension records and he was in 5th Ky Cavary Co. C. plus I have pension records on James Madison Riddle his wife Sarah Pruitt Riddle drew on him and then later on her son James Haggard Riddle who died in Andersonville prison. Plus I have Joseph Cephus Riddle pension record and
Abijah Riddle ( Elzie Bond signed affadavit for him)

But what my question is do you know if there is a way to get a whole roll of film with pension records on it or do you have to
order individually?
I plan to order some more on Cumberland Co men to see if
I can even more on family connections.

Hi Lois, I'm glad you found him and have the pension records to so many of our relatives. I have not yet sent for Joseph Cephas Riddle's record, but have been disappointed by NARA not finding other record's I have sent for. It's good to know someone has been fortunate. I'm waiting for a record now on one of my Smith gg grandfather's. I'm sorry I do not know the answer to your question about the microfilm. Hopefully someone will see your question who can answer it. Good luck. Oh, I wanted to ask you about the Riddle Scott cemetery. I found it in May last year, but when I went back in Sept. I couldn't locate any graves and the area seemed different. Where are the graves located from where you turn onto the road (by your sign)? It was pretty thickly overgrown in September, so maybe I just need to go in early spring again. Take care, Beckie

The cemetery is at a curve in the road about a mile after you
turn on the Scott _________? Rd. I had put up a sign saying
Riddle Scott Cemetery there also. there was also a sign saying lots for sale.

I went in March last year with a group of people and we cleaned it off. I went back in May and could not get in for the the weeds and briars so I can imagine how bad it was by Sept.
Because of snakes and such it needs to be cleaned off in winter and kept mowed several times a year. I have been thinking abt putting an ad in the paper in Burkesville and trying
to get someone to take care of it and then putting an ad in that we are taking up a collection to pay for it. What do you think abt trying this?

Hi Lois: I wish I were closer so I could help keep the cemetery up, but I would be willing to send some money to you if you could find a reliable person to keep it mowed a few times a year. There are an awful lot of Riddle descendants out there who should and could send a few dollars too. Maybe an add in the Cumberland Co. News asking for donations would help. Maybe the local historical society could help. I'm in Michigan, so I am limited as to the physical help I can provide. I subscribe to the Cumberland News my self and I bet a lot of the other Riddles do too, even though they are no longer in KY. Let me know your address and after the holidays I will send you a check. Let's wait until I have someone lined up to clean cemetery. Last year I paid a person some and told them to let me know how much more I owed when they cleaned it, but they got sick and did not do it.
Will let you know if I can find someone, it really needs some
work (Riddle cemetery) we picked up James Madison Riddle's stone and his wife Sarah Pruitt Riddle ( it had been
drug across the cemetery along with a dead tree) we put them
back in the approx area where they had been.
Did you know that the developers who sold this lot along with
the cemetery had told the new owner that there were no graves at the end of the cemetery.

Did you know also that next to this cemetery in the curve of the road is where the original Riddle house stood. The Joseph and Rhoda Monk Riddle house.

Hi Lois: I have talked with you before so you had told me a little about this area being the old homestead. My line is Joseph L. > Nathan R. > Joseph Cephas > Nathan Thomas > Thomas Morris Riddle who was my grandfather. When I first visited the graveyard that May 2000-thanks to your directions and sign-I was able to find most of the markers. I was short on time and was not able to take pictures and gravestone rubbings. I planned on doing that in Sept. and then could not find them on that second visit. I plan to get down again sometime next year-probably over Easter vacation, so hopefully I will have better luck finding them. It is a shame that developers can buy property containing a burial ground and not be required to respect/preserve it. Keep me posted on the search for a caretaker. Beckie

My mom and my aunt are Riddles, daughters of Claude Riddle and Myrtie Huff, son of Arter Riddle and Laura Bell Daniel, son of John and Happy, son of Nathan and Mary, son of Joseph and Rhoda. We are planning on visiting Burkesville, Cumberland Co. Ky., this summer, in hopes of seeing the gravesites of our grt.grandparents, both the Riddle's and Huff's.
Do you know if cemetery is still there, or maybe it's been destroyed? Arter and Laura were buried in Christian Chapel cemetery, Peytonburg.
On the web, in this area lots of dev. very little info. on the towns and cemeteries. (Kettle, Bow, Frogue.) I did read on one of the sites, that some cemeteries were relocated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi: John and Happy Riddle are buried in the Chestnut Grove church cemetery (church is still active)which is located on highway 485 right before the entrance to Dale Hollow Sate park. You would take Hwy 61 south from Burkesville following directions to Dale Hollow. Get a Cumberland county map when you arrive and there is also a map of the Dale Hollow area that will be helpful (this map marks cemeteries with little crosses). Nathan and Mary Riddle are buried on the site of the original Riddle farm near (across the road) the old Bow School House cemetery, but it is now overgrown and is unable to be seen from the road. You actually pass this area on the way to Chestnut Grove Cemetery. I was there several years ago and found many of the old Riddle markers. I haven't been to Christian Chapel cemetery. Peytonsburg, Frogue, Kettle, and Bow are just old deserted post office/stores-there are no real towns. There is a government cemetery where some of your kin may be buried near the old Kettle post office, off Hwy 485 on Kettle Rd. My Johnson family, who married Riddles were relocated (reinterred)there when the Dale Hollow dam was built. It is beautiful country to wander in and the people are friendly and helpful. The Cumberland county Library in Burkesville is a wonderful source for genealogy information so make sure you stop in whil you are there. Good luck on your search - Beckie

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I've been trying to finish last min. details reguarding my Riddle's and Huff's in the Burkesville area.
Beckie, you mentioned your Johnson family, I have a picture of a Lou Ella Willis, age 9, (mother Erie Riddle, father Willie Willis)who poss. married a Perry Johnson? Let me know if this ties into your family and I'll send you the pic.
Again, thank you for the info.
Take care. Angela

Hello John,
My great great grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Riall was in the 5th Cavalry. I have his pension record from Ancestry. Is there any other documentation available? (I have a PDF of another great great grandfather's pension application file from Florida which was free.)

I decend from Joseph Riddle and Rhoda Monk. The Riddle Cemetery is since known as the "Johnny Scott Cemetery". A cousin of mine helped clean it up a few years back. Apparently, the Riddle heir, a female, married a Scott and thus over time, it became the Scott Cemetery and not Riddle. Joseph was the original land owner. I'll look for the address and post it. -- Jodie

There will be a cemetery clean up this sat Mar 4th at Riddle
Scott cemetery off 449 on Scott Findley rd just before you
get to Bow School House Cemetery turn left on Scott Findley
Rd.
Just a rough clean up this time. Mostly Briar cutting which
prevents you from walking thru cemetery and will be trying
to find stones that have been moved when earth moving equip
went thru a couple of strips across cemetery. The above are
some of the names on stones and more. at least 2 civil war
Riddles have miltary stones.
