My great grandfather, William James Witty, served in the 25th and 17th Kentucky Infantry Regiments during the Civil War. The 25th Kentucky Infantry was organized in Calhoun, Kentucky, in 1861 and included a large number of Christian County men. Shortly after the Battle of Shiloh, what was left of the 25th was merged into the 17th Kentucky Infantry. I am interested in any information about either of these two regiments and the Christian County men who served in them.
Does anyone have any knowledge of Brown's Gallery ca. 1860's located in Hopkinsville? I have a tintype of Capt. Jacob C. Bennett taken when he was a 2nd Lt. of 8th Ky. (CSA). Since he was only a 2nd Lt. from Oct 1861 to Jan. 1862 and had enlisted at Hopkinsville, I'm wondering if he had his picture taken at Brown's by F. Eggel. Were there any other galleries located at Hopkinsville during this period?

Thanks
Sandy

Hi all,

I have a guy born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania who grew up in Lee Co, Illinois. Around 1944, he went to Ft Campbell and at the time of his death, 6 years later, he was a civilian mechanic. Hi death was very, very sudden.

He was living in/at Ft Campbell (is that a military base or a town?) but died in a hospital in Hopkinsville on 03 Dec 1950.

I'd like a copy of the obit to find his children which are so hard for me to track. One was Harriet M. Schmucker b. 1928 Lee Co Illinois who married (Franklin or Francis?) Frank Geisel, but I don't know where, how old he was, or anything about him. There is a guy named Lenyard Geisel who looks promising, though. :))

The other is Charles E Schmucker, b. 1923 Le Co Illinois but I am nearly positive his name is not really Charles because he was a Corporal in the Army and the WWII things that pop up on Ancestry searches don't seem to be him.

Anyway, I thought an obit might give a location or other leads that cold get me going again,

Thaks for any help,
Suzy

Shaw Family in Christian County, KY 1800-1840

I am trying to find out exactly WHERE my Shaw relatives lived in Christian County, possibly 10 miles NE of Hopkinsville. I have information that William Shaw settled in early 1800s in the Fairview neighborhood of Christian County near the West Fork (Little River) and built a horse mill. Descendant George Shaw lived on the homestead in 1881. One of his descendants, Thomas H. Shaw lived in the Mt. Vernon area when he had a Perrin's Biographical sketch done in 1884. I also have a list of relatives buried in the "Shaw Cemetery" but have no idea where it is located. Can you pass on maps or where I would find out specifically in Christian County my relatives lived and are buried? Also, how can I get a copy of the Perrin's biographical sketch from 1884? Thank you in advance for your help! Jayhawk
Henderson Murdered in Christian Co. - 9 Mar 1858

From the Boston Herald - 9 Mar 1858

A Terrible Affair in Christian County, Ky. - The Evansville Journal relates the particulars of a murder perpetrated a few weeks since in Christian county, Ky. They are as follows:

A man named Casey has been arrested for the murder of a neighbor named Henderson. It appears that Casey had married a woman with whom, it is said, Henderson had been previously intimate. This intimacy was kept up after the marriage. He had forbidden Henderson coming to his house, and when his visits were repeated threatened to shoot him if he caught him on his premises again. Two weeks ago Henderson left home, and not returning according to appointment, a search was instituted through the country, in which Casey joined for several days. After the search was over, Casey fled. After his departure Casey's wife disclosed the murder. Casey had shot Henderson, took the body and buried it in the stable, covered it with manure and put a horse in the stall, whose use of it obliterated all traces. The wife, however, disclosed the fact of the murder, and pointed out the place where the body had been buried. It was found with a bullet-hole through the skull.

END

A Double Murder - 19 Mar 1860

Not kin to any of the participants, just ran across when looking at old copies of the Louisville Daily Journal dated 19 Mar 1860.

A Double Murder - The Clarksville Chronicle gives the particulars of a most revolting case of double murder which occurred on Monday last in Christian county, Ky., about ten miles from Clarkesville. The scene of the tragedy was Hinsley's blacksmith shop. William Broadbent had separated from his wife, and she instituted suit for a divorce. Charles Bowles, who, we believe, boarded with Broadbent, was the constable who served the notice upon the husband, and when he had done so, Broadbent said to him - if it had been for you this would not have happened - alluding to the supposed intimacy between Bowles and his wife. Thereupon Bowles went away and returned with a double barreled gun, loaded with buckshot, renewed the subject, and, as Broadbent rose to his feet, shot him dead on the spot. Hinsley then said something about Bowles having done wrong, when the latter made demonstrations which induced Hinsley to run into the shop, which Bowles entered by the opposite door and presented his gun, which Hinsley seized and depressed so that when it fired the load entered his thigh instead of the breast. Hinsley had since died, and Bowles has escaped.

END

McLain ancestry

Have hit serious brick wall in researching McLane ancestry
G G grandfather was William Robards McLane who was born in Trigg County 07/08/1832. His parents were Samuel R McLain (various spellings) and Martha Sholar. Samuel and Martha were both born and married in Trigg County or its precursor Christian County. Their marriage was on 10/18/1831. Martha died soon after William R was born. Samuel R. remarried to Nancy Jane Lacy.

By 1850 this family moved to Henry County Tennessee. According to the 1850 census:

Samuel R- age 36- (abt. 1814)
Nancy J- age 30- (abt. 1820)
Wm R - age 16- (born 07/08/1832)
Martha- age 13- (abt. 1837)
Thomas- age 6- (abt. 1844)
Henry H- age 3- (abt. 1847)

According to the Goodspeeds Biographies of NW Arkansas (Franklin Co. pg. 1256 written in 1889)- Martha B became Mrs. Adkins of Henry County, TN. Thomas J also of Henry County, TN. Henry H is a Kansas farmer.

Any information around ancestry of Samuel R. McLain and Martha Sholar or any other part of this family would be much appreciated.

John W. Baynham and Virginia M. Baker

I am searching for birth information for John W. Baynham who married Virginia M. Baker Sep. 25, 1855 in Christian Co., Ky (my gggrandparents):

Kentucky Marriages, 1851-1900
about VIRGINIA M. BAKER
Name: JOHN W. BAYNHAM
Spouse: VIRGINIA M. BAKER
Marriage Date: 25 Sep 1855
County: Christian
State: KY

I believe that John W. Baynham was the son of John W. Baynham b. 1810 in Halifax Co., Va. and Rebecca Tillotson b. 1813 Buffalo Springs, Mecklenburg Co, Va. They have a son listed in the 1850 census named John W. and 16 years old, making him born in 1834 in Tennessee, probably Montgomery County. I have the information about John W. Baynham’s Jr.’s children, I only need to know for sure who his parents are – and I would love to know Virginia’s as well. Virginia later married D. A. Thornton, I believe David A. Thornton, b. 1838 in Va. and was living with him and both of their children in 1880 in Birminham, Marshall County, Ky. The other information I have about John W. Baynham comes from his son John Waller Baynham’s obituary, that he was a “prominent pioneer Kentucky tobacco warehouseman” in Louisville.

I am looking for information on the families of John Overshiner, Abraham Overshiner and Gideon Overshiner, brothers, who moved from Augusta Co VA to Christian County KY about 1815. Both John and Gideon were there through the 1830 census after which John either died or moved. Abraham was briefly in Christian County before moving to Mason County VA (now WVA) before 1830. I am trying to learn the children of John Overshiner and separate them from Abraham Overhiner's children since Gideon's children are identified in a biographical sketch published about him. Any information on John Overshiner, his wife, his children and who they married would be most appreciated as well as any information on Abraham Overshiner and Gideon Overshiner (not included in his biographical sketch).
Thanks!

Their children were Cordelia, Josephine, Pauline and of course Napolean 1841 known as Bud. Bud married Nannie Winders in 1876 and they begat Geneva b1880 and Creath Merrifield. Creath was the maiden name of Lucy's mother we think. We have lost track of this side of the family and want to connect to fill holes. We think Davis Merrifield was the son of John Merrifield died in Ill in 1836 and Priscilla Davis died in Logan Co.KY in 1826 at the Shaker Community. We do not know Davis' siblings and families
Cordelia Merrifield married Henry Patten of Montgomery Co.,TN

John K. YOUNG b. 1808 Christian county

I don't have proof that John K. Young was born in Christian county, but I'm following up on some research left behind by a family member. Just about any one of the Young households in 1810 Christian county could have been John's as they all had sons under 5. John K. YOUNG himself does not show up on a census until 1840 (Ripley Co. Missouri). He reportedly married a Nancy CLARK in 1832 but I don't know if that was in Kentucky or Missouri. They had 4 sons: Matthew b. 1834, William Jasper b. 1836. Thomas F. b. 1838 and Calvin b. 1840. This Nancy died in 1840 and John married another Nancy, this time Nancy STALCUP and they had 3 children: Elizabeth b. 1844, Mary M. b. 1846 and Preston J. b. 1847 (my gggf).

Nancy STALCUP died in 1850 and John in 1855, leaving the smaller children orphans. Family story says John, on his deathbed, gave a neighbor money to care for the children, which he took but abandoned them. I don't know why the older sons didn't take them in, but that's probably another story. Elizabeth, Mary and Preston ended up in Arkansas in 1860 in the household of Thomas B. Goforth, a name unknown to me, so maybe he was the neighbor and maybe he didn't abandon the children after all.

Would love to connect with someone researching this family.

Robin

War soldier, and brother to Hannah Abigail Conner Withers. Abigail was my 4th g-grandmother. According to John's pension file, Berry was born 1794 +/- 10 years. I found Berry in Christian County in 1820, but lose him and his family after that time. Abigail and her husband Thomas were administrators of John's estate. Would very much like to add more on Berry to the files.

So far I haven't been systematic in spelling of the surname, so y'all may have to search under both Husband and Husbands.
---------------------------
It's better to go directly to the above URL for website, or via worldconnect family trees portal at www.rootsweb.com
or search at http://wc.rootsweb.com
BY THOSE PORTALS, y'all can look at the source notes, or can look at more recent generations than are provided by the early global descendancy, for person on the family tree by just clicking on a name.
ALSO via those portals, the latest updates and corrections are incorporated into the family tree.
----------------------------------------
BUT, as a less preferred alternative, in case the above options aren't possible, here's what my descendancy currently says:
1.

I am seeking any information regarding Reuben H. Hughes who married Mary Dean, probably in the interval from 1800 to 1806, in Christian County.

At some point, Reuben was reported to also have lived in Woodford County.

One son Isaac Newton Hughes was born August 13, 1807 in Mercer County, KY.

I believe that Mary Dean-Hughes was born in Mercer County, KY in April, 1790.

Other sons, of Reuben & Mary Hughes, were Elias and William O.

Two of my cousins, now in their eighties, have been trying for years to obtain information, on Reuben H. Hughes and his parents, for years. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
I have found in several Kentucky genealogy books that people have written on marriages. I have even seen the marriage on Ancestry. Now the question is if these people have seen the marriage certificate to write the info down then the marriage is in a court house in the county. Having the marriage certificate would be great...but its the witness/parent name with the couple I am more interested in. Uriah Wheeler married Mary Stull on June 23, 1802 in Christian Co., KY. Would someone tell me the address so I can get a copy with all partys signitures.

I am searching for information on my ancestors who lived in Christian County, especially in the 1800's.

Between 1850 & 1860, William CANNON & wife Malinda (GANUS) & children: George Riley b 1839, James M., Parthena, Francis, Cordelia, John, William, & Sabrina, moved from Robertson Co. TN to Christian Co. KY. George Riley CANNON m Phoebe Ann LONG, whose parents were Thomas LONG & Polly CANNON. (George & Phoebe were 1st cousins.) They had the following children: William Thomas b 1863(m Icye Nora BARROW), Charles Elbert (m Mollie Underwood), George Andrew (m Blanche Dora BARROW, & Jessie William. These families later moved to TX & OK.
The parents of Icye Nora BARROW & Blanche Dora BARROW were George W. BARROW & Sarah Annie WILKINS. They divorced when the children were young, and I haven't been able to find out anything about George W., except that he may have had a brother, Thomas BARROW, a bank officer in Hopkinsville. Sarah Annie's parents were Thomas Alex WILKINS & Nancy Ann HARNED. I don't know if they had other children.
Any help with these families would be wonderful!

ELIZABETH CLINTON

Need info on any Clintons in Christian Co. KY before 1820. Trying to find parents for ELIZABETH CLINTON who marr. ROBERT J. GULLY in Hopkins Co. KY in 1811. Since Hopkins was formed from Christian shortly before the marriage, and since I haven't found her parents elsewhere, I'm hoping to find them in Christian. Any clue on any Clinton would be most welcome.
Thanks
