Cecelia,

How many times have we tried to find the marriate date for Georgia and John Robert? Today I picked up the marriage records for Christian County, KY and here it is. They were married on Dec. 25, 1888 by A. C. Biddle Minister. Witnesses were W. B. Lander and R. D. Reeder.

Now if we could only find her parents!!!

Yvonne

I also am interested in the Martin family of Christain County.

I'm looking for the family of Mildred Martin who was born c1884. She married Eddie Thomas Adams in Chrisian Co. on 17 Aug 1902. On her marriage record it list a James Martin but does not state his relationship to her - father, brother? It is believed that her mother was a Elizabeth B.
I can find no census, death etc. on any of these folks.

Many of this family moved on to Williamson County, Illinois.

Can anyone help me with Mildred & her parents?

James Slankard
Slankard@comcast.net

There's a good deal of information online at the Christian County KYGenWeb site:
http://www.westernkyhistory.org/christian/

And there are books for sale at the Christian County Genealogical Society site:
http://www.westernkyhistory.org/christian/ccgsbks.htm

See also the West-Central Kentucky Family Research site:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kywckfra/

Many records have been microfilmed by the LDS. You can do a "Place Search" to see what is available for Christian County:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a...

HeritageQuest (at ProQuest.com) is still selling the 1797-1839 Christian Co., KY, tax lists on microfilm (Rolls V20-72 and V20-74).

A.B. Willhite (4396 Coopertown Road, Russellville, KY 42276) extracted the 1804-1823 Christian County Tax Lists and self-published them in four hard-bound volumes, but I don't know if they're still available.

Hope this helps...

Hello:
How can I research those tax records? Is there a publication? How about on-line tax records and court records and land records? I'm not familiar with KY, but know our Power(s) family was there in the early 1800 to about 1810. They arrived to New Madrid MO just in time for the great New Madrid earthquake.

Best,
Rose

That would be most helpful. I should do search for tax records in KY, but not sure how to get to these records.

Also, land records and court records would be helpful for the early 1800's.

Good luck in your search.
Rose

Diana,

I am descended from Abrilla Martin, daughter of Daniel Martin and his first wife, Margaret Gray/Grey. Abrilla was born in Crawford County, IL.

She married John/Jehu Thomas who I believe was born in 1809 in Christian County, KY. They were married in 1838 in Jasper County, IL.

Do you know anything about the Thomas family in Christian County?

Also, there are a lot of connections with Higgins, Attaway and Dunlap families for the other side of my family - the Coxes. I know that the Cox family left NC in the mid-1830's. But some families from Pitt County, NC came through Indiana or Kentucky first.

I'd love to share information.

Susie Jernigan

Virginia,

Abrilla (my gg grandmother), Drucilla and Jeretta/Jerutha Martin, all daughters of Daniel Martin, married John/Jehu, Stewart and Urban Thomas.

My Thomas line has been the hardest. I have read so many things but been able to prove little. Many believe that John/Jehu - my gggrandfather, was born in Christian County, KY. He was born in 1809.

He was certainly related to Urban and Stewart and probably to a Zachariah Thomas who also appear in Crawford County. John/Jehu named his oldest son Henry and his oldest daughter, Margaret (Peggy). Other children's names included: Daniel, Zachariah, Andrew Jackson (my g grandfather), Abrilla, Nancy, James & Elizabeth. There may have been a Harriet who died as an infant.

Daniel and Andrew Jackson were in the Civil War.

Many believe there are links to Sumner, TN and George's Creek,PA. I have lots of those old families but the link breaks down for me going backward from John/Jehu. I don't have any proof who his parents were.

To complicate things even further, Stewart and Urban show birthplaces of TN and IN (I may have them backwards as I am sending this from my office).

In the 1850 census, Jehu and his wife, Abrilla Martin, are living next door to her father, Daniel Martin.

I have only one cousin who is a direct male descendant. He is willing to do the DNA test.

I live in North Carolina. Some folks believe this Thomas line at least passed through North Carolina.

I hope we have some information to share. Feel free to call me at my office if you have questions. I will be out-of-town on Friday. The number there is 704.372.1865 ext 123. My cell is 704.906.0491.

Susie Jernigan

Downing / Downen Family

I am trying to track down the Downing families that I believe to be descended from Josiah/Joseph Downing who I think is the son of William Downen and Margaret Robinson. Is anyone out there connected to this branch of the family?
Here is what I think I have pieced together so far...

I found a listing of the possible children of Josiah/Joseph Downing here -
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/D/DownenJosiahJoseph-Rebecca...

I believe I am related to this family through Elizabeth J. Downen who married William Ford Troxel in DeWitt County, IL in 1846. (I would like to verify that Elizabeth J. is actually the daughter of Josiah and Rebecca!)

The website above mentions that the wife of Josiah Downing might have been Rebecca Jane Troxel. But that the marriage record in Christian Co., KY, says Rebecca Mann. Anyone know any more about this possible Troxel connection?

It seems that Job Downen (the son of William Downen and Margaret Robinson) along with his brother Josiah and father William moved to DeWitt County, Ill.

Job Downen married Alabama Williams in 1835 in Macon County, IL. He died in 1841 and Alabama later married Frederick Troxel (the father of William Ford Troxel).
Now I believe that William Downen also moved to IL and remarried to Ludica (Spencer)French. He was living in DeWitt County, IL in 1850.

Josiah Downing (48) was living in DeWitt county in 1850 with his family.
wife Rebecca, 45
Josiah 16
Margaret 14
Alfred C. 11
Job 8
Henry C. 6
Josephine 3
All of the children born in IL.

Mary Ann (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) married Joseph Spencer in 1849 in DeWitt county, IL. This Joseph Spencer is also related to the Troxel family. Although I am not sure how he and Ludica are related.

As I mentioned earlier, Elizabeth Downen (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) married William Ford Troxel in DeWitt county in 1846.

There is a marriage record for Mariah Downing (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) in Macon Co., IL in 1877 to Cyrus Hollinger. Could this have been her second marriage?

The family of Josiah/Joseph Downing then moved to Linn county Kansas, Mound city Twp. where they were in 1860.
Josid Downing, 58
Rebecca, 54
Alfred, 22
Job, 20
Josephine, 12
also living next door
J. Downing Jr. 25
Phebe, 26 - b. NY
Martha, 1 - b. Kansas

I have not been able to locate any of these family members in 1870 census.

In 1880 census, some are living in Saline County, Miami Twp., Missouri.
Job Downing, 38
wife Amanda, 31
Loretta, 12
Frank, 9
George, 7
Stella, 5
Nora, 11/12,
all the children born born in MO
living next door is Alfred Downing, 41

Also living in Saline County, Miami Twp. MO
Josiah Downing, 44,
wife Phebe, 43
Henry, 19
Annie, 14
John, 12
Mary, 10
Josiah, 7
all the children born in IL.

I have not been able to track these families any further. Any help would be greatly appreciated on trying to figure out this Downen / Downing puzzle. I would like to verify the children of Josiah and Rebecca and try to figure out where they ended up. Also if anyone has information on the family of William and Margaret Robinson, that might be helpful too. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

The Boddie farm was located between Bennettstown and LaFayette, Ky, and was about 3-4 miles from my home. My father grew up here in the '40s & '50s and might have some information for you - who was your father? You can email me off-list at ysholmes@hughes.net with your questions, if you like. There is information in the published Christian County histories about the Boddie family. I'm given to understand that the farm was large enough at one point that it had its own school and post office, though I don't know offhand when that was.

Need the parents of Philemon Morriss. The 1810 census for Christian Co., has just 5 Morris families: Abraham, Thomas, William, James, and Jacob. The latter two are the only ones with a male child b. 1807.
The 1820, 1830, 1840 census shows Jacob Morris still there, but could also be another Jacob.
By 1830 Philemon is in Sangamon Co., IL with 1st wife Nancy Jackson and their first daughter. All leads and advice for research welcome. There are several other Philemon Morrises in Mecklenburg and Halifax, NC., but the Morris families who came to Christian Co., KY seemed to have come from Bertie Co., NC or Kanawha Co., VA.

Aloha from Hawaii. I am active duty in Honolulu and visited the USS Arizona Memorial the other day. I took a photo of the memorial wall showing the name T.L. Moss. Send me an email to my company e-mail address (jeffrey.moss@bms.com) and I will forward you my photos I took yesterday.
10-6-09
They would have been in KY in 1800 to about 1808.
Pennington is a surname. His father is John Wesley Power(s) and his mother was Naomi Pennington Power(s).
The family moved to MO in about 1805 to 1808. They were living in the New Madrid CO area during the big 1811 earthquake.

Their daughter's husband's fought in War of 1812 and Pennington Power(s) also fought in this war in 1814.

This is a tough one to solve. There are so many John Power(s).

Thanks for responding and sorry for the delay.

Rose
I am searching for information about the "Malcolm Bodie or Body Farm" that was located in Lafayette, Kentucky during the years of the 30's, 40's & 50's. My father lived with his family on that farm when the flood of 1937 occured and he talks about the creek near the Bodie farm. I would like any information about this or know where I could find information. Thank you all in advance.
Pamela Morris Siemsen
