As far as I can detect all my Johnsons left
Christian County by 1812 or so. At least they all seem to be accounted for in David Johnson's estate papers filed in
Cape Girardeau Co MO in 1823 though two or three were or had been in
Arkansas. Most were in Cape
Girardeau, Perry,
Madison, or
Bollinger Co MO.
I believe the odds are high that some children were left behind in
Christian County cemeteries, and there indeed are a large number of Johnsons especially at the
Johnson Baptist Church, but the cemetery book I've seen has no family links.
The
Oxley name doesn't fit any
Johnson that I know of.
I do know about dead ends, my ggggp David
Johnson is my dead end. Two sons were married in
Christian Co about 1808 (William and
Davis) and that's the earliest I can place the clan's location. They seem to have been counted as one large family in the 1810
Christian Co census even though at least two sons were married.
According to the statistics of the US 1790 census there were 10,600 individuals counted in those 12 states with the surname
Johnson, 11,000 named
Jones and 21,000 named
Smith which does make finding the right
Oxley Johnson and
Millie E. Jones a lot different than finding
Oxley Harbunkle and
Millie E. Southerland. When searching for Johnsons we have to accept a lot of information that is not of value in order to sort for our Johnsons. Its like a secondary sort based on the given names where the internet lists are based strictly on surname. I sometimes wish for there to be subdivisions of the
Johnson lists by given name. May have to organize something like that sometime.
