Humm... don't know if this is the same Crawford line but I have the following lines from Botetote Co. VA:
To begin, I would never have been able to research and find this ancestral information without the clues you earlier provided Paige. These consisted of the details that your grandmother Lucille Crawford was born in Clifton Forge (Allegheny Co.) and that her parents were Thomas Crawford and Donnie Brookman. Without this information, I could have never gotten started. We knew that Lucille was born in 1905 somewhere in Virginia but couldn't find a (white) Lucile Crawford anywhere in Virginia in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. We could, of course, find her in the 1930 and 1940 censuses married to Avery C. Miller and living in Richmond.
I first found a clue when I found a Lucy (not Lucile) Crawford, age 5, in the 1910 census living with an elderly widow named Mary J. Burk, age 56 and three of Mary's children in Covington, Allegheny Co. At that time, I did not know who this Mary J. Burk was. I then checked the 1900 census in Allegheny Co. and found a Thomas Crawford, age 23 living in Clifton, Allegheny Co. and listed as a boarder and partner. In the same census, I got really lucky and similarly found a Dona Broughman, age 24 (born Nov 1875) with a two-year old daughter named Georgia (Broughman is pronounced in German very similarly to Brookman in English). I looked back to the 1880 census and again found these same people. There was a family in nearby Fincastle, Botetourt Co. headed up by John Crawford (age 24) with wife Lucy (age 21) with the following children: Henry T., age 5, Daniel, age 4, Thomas, age 2, and Fannie, age 4 mos. In the same town, I found a record of Samuel Broughman, age 45, Frances, age 29, Andonie, age 7, Ida, age 5. Lee, age 4. and Elizabeth, age 1. I realize the ages of these children are, in part, slightly off but the names and locations indicate to me that I had found the same families. The Lucy as the wife of John Crawford sure looked like a good clue.
I went back to the 1910 census and found Samuel Broughman in Fincastle under the listing of James and Ida Brown. It appears that the census taker made an error transcribing his compilation in the copy that is now available. Ida was clearly a daughter of Samuel and Eliza Frances. Anyway, listed under Samuel Broughman (age 67) is his wife Eliza Frances (age 56), several children and four granddaughters named Georgia, age 12, Eva and Elise, both age 8,and Pearl (age 3). These girls all have the last name of Crawford! I did some more searching and found that the maiden name of Eliza Frances Broughman was Kelly and she was a daughter of James Allen Kelly and Ann Matilda Heslep. Further research revealed that the aforementioned Mary J. Burk also had a maiden name of Kelly and was a sister of Eliza Frances Kelly Broughman. So Lucy Crawford, at ge 5, was living in 1910 with a great aunt.
I trust you have been able to follow all this. The vital point is that it appears that both Thomas Crawford and his wife Andonie Broughman Crawford appear to have died just before 1910. I seriously doubt if they both ran off. They had at least four children; I am not sure who the father of Georgia was. The children had to then be parceled out to various relatives. Paige will have to go to these counties in Virginia some time and try to find out what happened to Thomas and Donnie.
This information got us to Lucy's grandparents of John and Lucy Crawford and Samuel and Eliza Frances Kelly Broughman. The remaining question was what was the maiden name of John Crawford's wife Lucy? I found John Crawford as a 14 year-old teenager in the 1870 census in Botetourt Co. with parents Jackson and Mary Crawford. Three pages away was a listing for a Lucy Broomfield, age 12, at the household of James and Mary Bloomfield. Going back on these families was relatively easy as they are well published in Ancestry.com Public Member Trees. I double-checked their information with the 1850 and 1860 censuses and confirmed their accuracy. I am, however, not totally certain that Lucy Bloomfield is correct. There was not listing for this. Again, Paige will have to verify this with research in these counties.
