Plum Lick Church

Does anyone have any information about and/or pictures of a Plum Lick Church that was once on Plum Lick Road (Bourbon or Montgomery County, KY—as area is where two counties meet)? I have found one reference to it in an old Mt. Sterling Advocate dated December 11, 1912, saying that the church donated a large tent to a Rev. Silas Ritchie that he would take on an evangelistic tour in the spring. I know that the church was not far from the intersection of Plum Lick and Rock Ridge Roads and not too far from a rock quarry that was often used for baptisms in the area. The church still existed when my father was a child (born late 1920s). There was also a Plum Lick School that was possibly held in the same building as the church.
Cathy
Ancestors of Leonard W. Fristoe

I am writing in hopes that someone can or would be willing to help me find some information on the ancestors of Leonard William Fristoe aka Claude R. Willis (01/15/1893 - 03/03/1976). I have searched desperately for days to find more information, but have hit a dead end. I suspect many of you have an arsenal of tips and tricks far greater than mine. I would be forever grateful for your help. So far, I have traced back two generations, but I need farther back.

I have his father and mother as: Joseph William Fristoe and Annie Valentine Supple. His grandparents are: Charles B. Fristoe (1827-06/27/1864) and Kate Evans (07/18/1843-04/05/1864). That is as far as I can get.

I found a Charles Bailey Fristoe, but his date of birth is too far off and his spouse/children were different.

I am inclined to believe that this Charles B. may have been a confederate soldier who died in the war and that he may have had a brother who also died in the war.

An 1870 Census shows Joseph and Martha (Children of Charles B. as residing in the Evans household - with the parents of Kate).

I have a hunch, and this is only a hunch.... that this Charles B. could be the son of Joseph Fristoe (1801-1850) and Martha Rudasill (1801-1892), but I have no proof, no sources and no real indicators except one thing:

A source for Martha discusses that she had 2 sons who died for the cause of the Confederacy, one was a Charles B. and a William S. Based on the fact that my other Charles B in the Leonard line, died around the same time and his children had to live with his In-Laws, it makes me wonder. He could very well have been a Confederate Soldier.

If anyone has any ideas or leads or information, I would be so very grateful. These are the only Fristoe's that I have not been able to tie into our tree.

If you can help, let me know and I will send you a link to my family tree on ancestry.com. I have the big Fristoe tree and then a separate tree with all the Leonard Fristoe ancestors until I can tie them together.

Sincerely and thank you in advance for any help you can provide,
Jennifer Fristoe

Some of my information agrees with Bob's and some does not. I have the feeling there are several David Jameson. The one I am researching, born Mar 10 1757, possibly in NJ,served in the western campaign with Capt. Mathew Arbuckle at Point Pleasant, according to Rev. War pension file, married Hannah Richards, Greenbrier Co., WV,and settled in Bourbon Co. KY before 1813 and died there June 1833. I have identified 3 brothers, John Samuel and William but know of no sisters. That doesn't mean there weren't any, I just haven't been able to document this, so I would be glad to hear of one and happy to share information. Several accounts have them as the sons of Robert Jamison/Jemison and Sarah McKee, but again I have no documentation for that. I'd be glad to hear from you

Hi Mary and/or Bob or anyone else who finds this post.

Are you still researching David Jameson? Is he the son of John Jameson? I am descended from David's sister Sally whom I believe married Robert Mitchell, according to the marriage bonds and permission to marry record that I have. The David I am researching was the guardian (I believe) of Robert and Sally Jamison Mitchell's children. Since the marriage of Sally and Robert took place in Bourbon Co, KY I am hoping I have the correct Mitchell family.

Thanks,
Andrea

I am a descendant of an Alexander Smith b c 1790 SC m Patsy ? who was in Morgan Co AL by 1830; widow Patsy was in Titus Co TX with daughter Sarah Smith Ryan (Harris Ryan) by 1860. Alexander's first son was, we believe, named Hiram. Hiram Smith, b c 1820 SC can be found also in 1850 Titus Co TX living near the Ryans. I've likewise wondered if Hiram M Smith b KY could be kin to this Alexander and he marriage license listed above is interesting since Patsy is a familiar name for Margaret. I also have a Smith DNA project and recently got 2 YDNA testers that come through one of Alexander's sons, Sherill, to test (results not back yet). What would tell the story here would be if there is a known direct line male Smith descendant from the earlier Alexander Smith b 1745 m Jane Miller to be a YDNA tester. IF the trees I see are correct, I don't think the Alexander in 1830 Morgan Co AL is the same one that is son of Alexander unless his first wife, who is said to be Alexander Jr's wife Polly Porter Barnes, died before the marriage in 1825.

Hi David, I am unable to provide any new information or documentation for your ancestor Jesse Wilson. As you know there were several men by that name in the area and time frame you mention and there are many theories on how they connect but no proof. That is why I recommend DNA testing as the only way to resolve the issue whether there was a common ancestor between our families and how many generations removed we might be. I believe one of my cousins was planning on a DNA test last year and I hope with a little arm twisting other Wilsons from the Bath/Montgomery/Bourbon/Nicholas Co area will also participate in DNA testing. Sorry I could not be of more help. Connie

I've found a Jesse Wilson born around 1807 in Kentucky (I suspect near Montgomery or Fleming county since Bath County didn't exist until 1811) who later married a Julia Ann (also Juliana) Prather in Bath County, KY 1833. The 1840 and 1850 census lists them and their children in Hendricks County, IN where all my paternal lineage is from. Their oldest child Jeremiah Wilson was born in KY in 1835 and appears on the 1840 Census in Hendricks, IN suggesting they moved shortly after his birth. There is plenty of documentation regarding the ancestors of Julia Ann Prather, but I have met a wall with Jesse Wilson. There are several Wilson clans who moved from VA to KY but I haven't been able to match any of the names or dates. Any help would be appreciated.

I have Perkins family in Bourbon Co, but there are two Perkins families that were there, My aunt Rhoda Hester was there but not that early going by the age of my grand father she would have not been born till around 1870. I have done a lot of Perkins research in that area, here was a seperate bunch of Perkins that were in Bracken county, Mine came out of Bath and Fleming County before Bourbon.
Mary

John "Uncle Jackie" Berry

I realize that several people have been stuck on this particular man for a number of years now. Since I haven't seen anything on him here in the message boards in a while, I thought that I would retouch on the subject.

John "Uncle Jackie" Berry was born August 20, 1794 in Port William, Kentucky. He lived to be 103 years old, and fathered 21 children by two wives. He first married Elizabeth Melton, who was born October 18, 1806 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina. They married October 27, 1826 in Fayette Co., Illinois. Their first child was William Kendall Berry born 1828 in Fayette Co., Illinois.

After that, they moved to Missouri, living a short time in Phelps and Crawford Co., Missouri before eventually settling in Dent Co., Missouri.

The rest of the children by Elizabeth were,

John Henry
Martin Henry
James Hamilton
Rebecca Elizabeth
Amos Ery
Francis Marion
Cynthia Anne
Silas Asa
Loucasta Rebecca
David Arcadia
Elizabeth
Jemima Angeline
Enoch Ebenezer
Jackie Jr.

Elizabeth Melton died August 29, 1865 in Dent Co., Missouri. After which, John married a widow Rebecca Lucinda Creasey York, born January 21, 1823 in Tennessee.

They had an additional six children, who were,

Martha Jane
Joseph George Washington
Mary Ellen
Calvin Theodore
Andrew Jackson
Pacific

John "Uncle Jacke" Berry died January 7, 1898 in Salem, Dent Co., Missouri at the age of 103.

From what I understand, no one has found out who his parents were. There is some speculation that his father was also born in Kentucky in 1769 and his mother's name is Rebecca born 1774 in Germany. They were supposedly married in Bourbon County, Kentucky. But I am not so sure that that information is even correct.

I suspect that John and Elizabeth gave their first born William a surname as a middle name "Kendall". I was thinking that either John's mother or grandmother was a Kendall. Does anyone else have any similar suspicions?

Has anyone out there gotten any further with John Berry? Is anyone out there willing to compare suspicions or notes?
Paul Gregg, Marie Charlotte Gregg, James Edward Gregg

My name is Jacoby Lowney, I am the Grandson of James Edward Gregg. James Gregg was born in Paris, Bourbon County Kentucky on Sep 2, 1885 and reportedly served active duty during the first world war. We also show him signing up for the draft in Hill County, Montana in 1917 but understood that he may have been active duty prior to this. We do know that James Gregg was in Point Barrow, Alaska when the 1920 Census was recorded. A marriage certif located in Montana shows his parents as a "Paul Gregg" and mother was a "Marie Charlotte". We are not sure what brought Paul Gregg to Paris Kentucky or if Paul was possibly a middle name. Marie Charlotte was reportedly born in Oklahoma and was of Native American descent. This is family lore but there may be some truth to it as there is definately some Native American "features" in some of our family. In the 1920 Census for Point Barrow, Alaska, James Gregg's father was listed as born in "France". James Gregg disappeared for decades and upon the death of his daughter, Virginia in 1953, he was no-where to be found. Recently, I went to San Diego and located his death record which led me right to his grave in Mount. Hope Cemetery. It makes me sad that he just vanished off the earth without ever knowing his family. Even more mysterious, is why the family never heard from him again, even after his passing. We were never notified. Until 2011, We had no idea he was laid to rest in San Diego.

I am desperate to find records on who his parents were, where they came from and what became of them. I would love to discover Marie Charlotte's Native Amercan information as well as Paul Gregg info as well. I would additionally like to obtain all of James Gregg's Military records but don't know where to begin. There seem to be so many records repositories..I am lost. We know that James Gregg and his wife Belva were taken to Point Barrow, Alaska in 1919 aboard the US Revenue Cutter Bear. They were both reportedly in the employ of the Govenment but don't know what capacity. I am so desperate to know my ancestry and it just bothers me to know that the information I am seeking is out there but it seems like finding a needle in a haystack.

Can you help me out here on my request or possibly offer me some insight as to where I can go to get the answers? I am more than willing to pay for results should you be willing to help me. WOuld your library or any of your local genealogical societies have any information on the Gregg family?

My address is 1402 Chanel Loop, Billings, Montana 59101, my telephone number is 406-465-5667 and my email address should you wish to contact me is glendalecrazy@aol.com

Additional information on James Edward Gregg:

SSN: 516-12-6826
Date of Birth: Sep 2, 1885

Passed away in San Diego in 1974.

Last known address: Golden West Hotel, 720 4th Ave. San Diego, California

Thank You in advance for any help you can offer.
Jacoby Lowney

Margaret May Lewis several times. I amnot sure of the name of her first husband. Her second husband was James McCusker
She was married to him when Damon was born. His name at birth was James McCusker. She divorced him soon after and there after Damon, as I knew him, used the name Damon Alpheus Lewis. He married Alice Maud Shannon under this name. Damon and Alice were divorced about 1916 and Damon enlisted in the Navy during world War 1. There he was required to use James McCusker as his legal name. In about 1934 he again met His first wife Alice and they decided to remarry. Alice insisted that he change his name to Damon Lewis legally as that is the name his children used. Burnell was the name of his mother's third husband and as he was living with them, I would guess that is why he was listed by that name in the census. The information on his death certificate was probably information that he had given to the Veteran's hospital where he died. Hope this makes sense to you.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, and thank you so much for this new info! I've been looking into Damon's history (because sometimes researching a different person helps lead you to others, namely, Alpheus Lewis and Margaret Helm Scott) . . . but I have a few questions, which I hope you won't mind answering if you can.

On Damon's marriage record, he lists his mother as "Margaret M. Bunnell." Again, on his death record, his mother's name is listed as "Bunnell." This would presumably be his mother's maiden name . . . but you're saying his mother was actually Margaret M. Lewis, so Bunnell must be her married name?

If that's the case, do you know who Damon's father was? I found a census record of a Lucius Augustus Bunnell married to May M. Bunnell, their son being Damon L. Bunnell. The dates seem to match, etc., but I'm hesitant to say that that's your Damon!

If it is indeed a match, and Damon Alpheus Lewis was actually Damon Bunnell . . . why did he later change his surname to Lewis?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, lol. But if you have any other info about Alpheus Lewis, Margaret Helm Scott, and Margaret May, etc., please let me know! I'd love to keep piecing together this family tree. :) Thanks.

We now believe the wife of Abel Johnson was Mary/Polly Hibler, daughter of Daniel and Jane Hibler who also lived in Bourbon Co, KY. Abel and Polly married Jan 1818 in Bourbon Co. We have Abel jr 1817 or 1818; William Henry born 181826; Andrew J 1823; Lucinda 1829; Joseph 1837 and 4 unknown daughters all born in Bourbon Co. The family migrated to Monroe Co, Mo around 1838 or 9 where one more son, John Thomas was born in 1841. We believe Wm. Henry or Henry lived in Bourbon county about 1845. He married Anna Bishop in Bourbon co in 1852; she died in 1872; he married Salina Johnson later the same year. He was the father of 11 children. A book about the history of Monroe County Missouri dated 1884 states he had been a resident there for 42 years.

Hi Connie, my family too. I have something from the British Isles which shows James and Martha and at least 3 of their sons being there. A lady from, the LDS library in Fort Wayne located it for John Dunn whose family migrated to N.IN in the mid 1800s with the Driscolls.
I think we have spoken before. James son John is my line. I have the same things you do I think.
My email is nonny984@comcast.net. Roslyn

Roslyn,
I am interested in your John Long and your reference to his daughter who married James Dunn. I have a connection to the James Dunn family as one of my direct ancestors, James Bruster, had a daughter who married a son of James and Martha Dunn. The families appear to have been connected in several other marriages as well. There is a family lore that James Dunn and James Bruster (also Brewster) were born in Ireland (County Derry) within a half-mile of each other, lived in Augusta County, Virginia, within a half-mile of each other and lived, died and were buried in Fayette County (later Jessamine County), Kentucky, within a half-mile of each other. I have confirmed the Augusta and Fayette parts of this lore, but not the County Derry part. I have known that the Longs were also connected to these families but not much more than the name John Long as the father of Martha Long Dunn. I have reserached the Dunns and Brusters in Virginia and Kentucky, but don't know much about them before their arrival in Augusta County, Virginia. I would be happy to swap information and documentation with you, if you would like to share.
Connie

Kentuckiana Digital Library has quite a bit you can search. It takes some work.

I use it for metal detecting location research. You can often bridge the gap between two separate pieces of information with an article in there. Not to mention it's just interesting to read what was important to people !
