After reading your post Ray, I was leaning to the idea that Henriette Fiers was the possible mother to the Edward V. Brown who is living in the John Cox household in 1880.
But in searching I found that Henriette married a Josiah Sweeney and was living in Horse Cave, Hart, KY in 1880 and 1910. She died in 1929. So she is not Edward V. Brown mother who died in childbirth. Ray thanks for all your help, I will now look at Coffey Cemetery near Wisdon, where the Cox Family are buried and maybe this young Brown mother is buried there.

Thanks to John Huffman I have his book, Huffmans to the Barrens, online:
http://huffman.so-ky.com/h2b/index.html
There are several mentions of Jemima and related under the Teter Huffman family.

19. LEWIS MILUM11 HUFFMAN (JULIUS10, DIETRICH "TETER"9, JOHANNES HENRICH8 HOFMANN, JOHANNES7,
TILLMANN HOFMANN6 LLL, DIETRICH5 HOFMANN, TILLMANN HOFMANN4 LL, HEILMANN3 HOFMANN,
TILLMANN2, HENRICH1) was born 1832 in Barren County, Kentucky, and died 1925 in Merkel, Taylor County,
Texas. He married VIRGINIA F. MURRY June 17, 1855 in Barren County, Kentucky. She was born 1830 in
Nelson County, Virginia, and died 1894 in Merkel, Taylor County, Texas.
Notes for LEWIS MILUM HUFFMAN:
According to Barren County Guardian records, Lewis M. Huffman became the legal Guardian of John
and Drewry Fiers for three years from 1859 to 1862. The two boys were sons of Ausman Fiers and his wife,
Mary Jane Murray. It is believed that she was the sister of Virginia F. Murray, the wife of Lewis Huffman,
making the orphaned boys nephews of the Huffmans. Their mother died in Barren County, Kentucky in the
summer of 1854 from a cholera epidemic brought to Glasgow by the circus. Their father was the Postmaster
for the town of Randolph, Kentucky from 1847 until his death in 1858. After the death of their father, the
children, two sons and one daughter, were assigned Guardians and sent to live in their homes. The daughter
was named Henrietta, and her appointed Guardian was John Cox and his wife, Jemima Elizabeth Huffman.
Jemima was a first cousin of Lewis Huffman, and the Huffmans and the Cox's were neighbors in Metcalfe
County.
November 21, 1859 - Lewis M. Huffman became legal Guardian of John and Drury Fiers. James L. Cummins was Surity for Huffman.

---------
20. JOHN11 COX (LUCINDA10 HUFFMAN, DIETRICH "TETER"9, JOHANNES HENRICH8 HOFMANN, JOHANNES7,
TILLMANN HOFMANN6 LLL, DIETRICH5 HOFMANN, TILLMANN HOFMANN4 LL, HEILMANN3 HOFMANN,
TILLMANN2, HENRICH1) was born 1824, and died Aft. 1880. He married JEMIMA ELIZABETH HUFFMAN
August 16, 1846 in Barren County, Kentucky, daughter of URIAH HUFFMAN and LUCY ROUNTREE. She was
born 1824, and died Aft. 1880.

In 1846, John Cox, age 22, married his first cousin, Jemima Elizabeth Huffman, age 22, in Barren County,
Kentucky. He was the son of Chastain Cox and Lucinda Huffman while she was the daughter of Uriah
Taylor Huffman, Lucinda's younger brother, and Lucy Rountree.
The 1850 U.S. Census for Barren County, Kentucky lists John Cox, age 27, as Head of Household, his
wife, Jemima E., age 26, son, Smith B., age 3, and daughter, Tallitha, age 1.
The 1860 Metcalfe County Census lists John Cox, age 39, a Farmer and Head, his wife, Elizabeth, age 35,
a son, Smith B., age 13, a daughter, Talilhaoma(?), age 11. Also living in the same household were Henrietta
Fires, age 15, in school, and George W. Huffman, age 21, farming.
Author's Note: Henrietta Fiers, listed in the 1860 Census, was one of three orphaned children of Ausman
Fiers and Mary Jane Murray. (See Notes For Lewis Huffman above.) The children, two boys and one girl,
were assigned to live with Guardians, appointed by the County. Henrietta went to live with the family of
John Cox, and the two boys went to live with the family of Lewis Huffman. The Coxs and Huffmans were
neighbors. George W. Huffman, listed in the same census, was a younger brother of Lewis M. Huffman and a
first cousin to Elizabeth Huffman Cox. Evidently, in 1860, he lived with the Cox household and helped with
the farming.
In the 1880 Barren County Census John Cox, age 60, is listed as Head of Family and a Farmer. Also
listed is J. E., his wife, age 55, a son, S.G., age 17, and a daughter, M.E., age 13.
More About JOHN COX:
Burial: Coffey Cemetery near Wisdom, Metcalfe County, Kentucky
Occupation: Farmer
More About JEMIMA ELIZABETH HUFFMAN:
Burial: Coffey Cemetery near Wisdom, Metcalfe County, Kentucky

Children of JOHN COX and JEMIMA HUFFMAN are:
67. i. SMITH BARLOW12 COX, b. June 01, 1847; d. June 08, 1930, Lecta, Kentucky.
68. ii. TABITHA CUMI COX, b. August 26, 1849; d. September 11, 1934.
69. iii. SHERMAN G. COX, b. May 1862.
iv. MARY ELLEN COX, b. 1866; m. GEORGE T. SHIRLEY, December 27, 1882, Barren County, Kentucky.

Children of DIETRICH HUFFMAN and JEMIMA BARLER/BARLOW are:
i. SUSANNAH10 HUFFMAN, b. February 14, 1777, Culpeper County, Virginia.
ii. SARAH ANN HUFFMAN, b. 1779, Culpeper County, Virginia; d. Brown County, Ohio; m. GEORGE A. MELVIN,
April 12, 1798, Mercer County, Kentucky.
Notes for SARAH ANN HUFFMAN:
Notes for GEORGE A. MELVIN:
Taken from Mercer County Marriages, 1786 to 1810, p74 :
Marriage Bond issued to George Melvin and Sally Huffman, April 12, 1798.
Bondsman: Ambrose Barlow
Bride's father: Peter Huffman (Misspelled here. The original document clearly shows "Teter".)
Teste: Nimrod Kensley and William Raine
On April 14, 1807, George Melvin purchased from Samuel Thompson, a parcel of land located on the waters of
Dick's River, Mercer County, Kentucky, containing 50 acres, more or less, for the sum of twenty five pounds, six
shillings, and four pence. (Deed Book 6, p257, Mercer County Clerk's Office)
The 1810 U.S. Census for Mercer County, Kentucky lists George A. Melvin as Head of Household, his wife, and
seven children, including four girls and three boys.
The 1820 Mercer County Census lists George A. Melvin (misspelled as "Meloen") his wife and eleven children,
including six girls and five boys.
George Melvin was not listed in the 1830 or subsequent Census Reports for Mercer and surrounding counties. It
is assumed that sometime after 1820 the family relocated to another area, possibly Brown County, Ohio.
iii. ELIZABETH HUFFMAN I, b. August 26, 1782, Culpeper County, Virginia; d. 1785, Culpeper County, Virginia.
2. iv. EZEKIEL HUFFMAN, b. August 26, 1782, Madison County, Virginia; d. March 31, 1868, Platte County, Missouri.
3. v. JULIUS HUFFMAN, b. 1783, Culpeper County, Virginia; d. 1855, Barren County, Kentucky.
4. vi. LUCINDA HUFFMAN, b.
Nancy, thank you so much! This is the John Cox family that Edward V. Brown was living with in 1880. In the Census they listed him as a nephew. I don't know if he was John or Jermima nephew. John and Jermima daughter Mary Luella (Polly) married a John H. Neal in Boone Co. IN and on their marriage lic. it stated that John and Jermina were her parents. Polly had no children. She would come to Indiana to visit Edward who was raise as a little brother. It was here that she met and married John Neal. If any know female sibling of John or Jermima that might have died at an early age. She would have married a Brown in about 1877.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Nancy because of people like you, who are willing to share, genealogy is so much fun :-)

I have a John COX (b.ca 1824 Barren Co KY) who md Jemima Elizabeth HUFFMAN (b.ca 1825 Barren Co KY). I show this John as s/o Chastain COX (1770/1775 Pittsylvania Co VA - ca 1836/37) and Lucinda HUFFMAN (21 Mar 1787 Mercer Co VA [KY]). Jemima was d/o Julius B HUFFMAN (1783 Culpeper Co VA - 1855 Barren Co KY) and Nancy CROW (b. ca 1790 VA). John & Jemima were 1st cousins because Julius B & Lucinda HUFFMAN were children of Teter (Dietrich) HUFFMAN (1755 Orange Co VA - 1835 Barren Co KY) and Jemima BARLOE (1756 Culpeper Co VA & 1842 Barren Co KY). Hope this is yours. I do not show the children of John & Jemima (HUFFMAN) COX.
A friend of mine is 105 years old and she never knew who her grandparents where. Here is how the story goes;
Edward V. Brown was born 4 Jun 1878 in or near Cave City, KY, as quoted on his WW1 draft card. Edward's mother died in childbirth and he was given to John Cox and family who in the 1880 census lived in Slip Rock, Barren Co. KY, he is listed as a nephew.
Question: Does Barren Co have death records for 1878?
Does anyone have info on the Brown Family of Slip Rock?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
Rebecca Merritt
Lebanon, IN

This is a reply to a really old post from VickyKellarLinke, so hopefully she is still monitoring the list:

I am posting the Steffey Graves in Barren County on www.findagrave.com

Also have notes on this family, death certificates, etc.
tonya.archey@wku.edu

I have pictures of Clara Mae Steffey and her mother. Her mother was Francis Adosha Stinnett Steffey. According to a death certificate of Clara's sibling, her father's name was Matt Stinnett. That's what it looks like.

Tonya

Hi John,
I'm from the Settle/Suttle, Huffman, Browne, Morgan, Strother lines and I own a copy of the Settle/Suttle Family book by Reese that mentions some of these great characters. I'll be happy to do some look-ups for you if you haven't access to this book. I like his book in particular because he gives sources and sometimes there are copies within his pages, he has been very reliable in my searches. His work has been accepted in my DAR papers, if that helps.
Please use my email tcbelle@verizon.net if I can help you.
Cleo

Hello all!

I know this thread dates to 1998, so slim chance of a reply, but here goes...

Looking for any data on:

Mary Will Duff (my g-g-grandmother)
William W. Duff & Winnifred ("Winny") Butler
Fielding Duff & Elizabeth ("Betsy") B. Willis
John Duff & Mary Wheatley (or possibly Whitney)
James Duff & Sarah Neal
James Wheatley(?) & Lucilla (?)
William Willis & Hannah Settle
George Settle & Mary Morgan
Isaac Settle & Charity Browne
John Settle & Mary Strother
Maxfield Browne & Sarah Newman
William Morgan & ?

I have some Barren Co. Census records building out Fielding & Betsy's children (plus their marriage record), and William & Winny's children (plus Sarah E.'s, Edmund Q.'s, & mary Will Duff's marriages & kids).

But the rest is pinched (un-citationed) from various board postings and member trees. Would anyone have a clearer picture, with any sources?

Thanks!

John

According to obit for Haywood Poynter he is buried in this cemetery on Oil Well Road - just past Cedar Grove Church Road.

I was there just recently but it was very overgrown - does anyone know (l) if there is a tombstone for Haywood, (2) if Wife Delilah Poynter is at same location and (3) is there anyone I can contact who owns the land that this cemetery is located on?

Thank you
Lyn/Indiana

You are definitely correct in the "near Oil Well Road" for Haywood - I was mistaken - the reason was that his wife's obit read Oil Well near Cedar Grove Road - I am still interested in who owns the property for that particular cemetery. Thank you for your reply

I'm not sure this is the Kinslow Cem. you are referring to?
http://www.so-ky.com/cem/barrencem/k/kinslow/kinslow-idx.htm
Martha and Daine Harrison provided the photos.

The Barren Co. Cem. Book lists 25 burials. The Poynters listed are: Acey, Catherine, Mary Erwin, Venie Zilpha and Willis Yancey.

I don't know who currently owns the property.

I checked the obituary for Haywood Poynter, and it says "near the Oil wells." There are two Kinslow cemeteries on the Oil Well road. The one "Near the oil wells" is Kinslow cemeery # 3, or Aunt Laura Kinslow cemetery. It is much larger than the one near Cedar Grove church, and has many graves marked with field stones. A child, Joel Anderson Poynter, was buried there in 1920. According to an earlier record, also buried there are: Effie, Mary, Vennie and W. Y. Poynter. The owner is Wade Barton, and he lives in the house near it.
