Surnames: Sullivan, Goins
I have located them in the 1880 census. I can't find anything about them after 1880. My questions are:
1. Who are Elijah's parents. I visited Mayfield this past summer and located an Elijah Sullivan headstone in the Mt. Zion cemetery (several Sullivan's buried there). The birth date was on the stone was 1823. I couldn't dig down deep enough to find the death date (not sure there is one). Would like to know if this is the same Elijah. The records that I have point to Edward Uriah Sullivan as being his father. I am trying to verify this though.
2. What happen to Sarah Goins Sullivan after 1880?

The children they had were John Dan(not Daniel), Cynthia, Jim and Ollie Mae. I have info on all but Cynthia.
Any, Any, Any, Any help would be appreciated. I plan to go back to Mayfield and visit the library to see if I can find anything but, what a lot of reading to do.

Regarding Elijah Sullivan, there seems to have been 2 Elijah Sullivans in Graves or Ballard Co. at the same time. One was born circa 1822 and the other circa 1824-25. The one born circa 1824 said he was born in Tn,, his father in S.C. and his mother in Georgia.(These states may have been incorrectly stated by Elijah on the 1880 census). On the 1850 census of Graves Co. was an Elijah Sullivan, age 28, (born in Tn,)wife Mary 24,(b. in Ky), Cynthia age 6, Francis(a girl - age 5). Uriah Sullivan was born in N.C. and wife was Martha, also born in N.C. It seems your Elijah was the one born circa 1824-25. Do I have you now confused? I dont feel Uriah is the father because of the states he and wife Martha were born in. Good Luck in your search. Bob Eddings, no relation.

yes I'm aware of the two Elijah's. No you haven't confused me.
The one thing that is hard to figure out is the headstone that I took a picture of located at the Mt.Zion cemetery just outside of Mayfield. The headstone was that of Elijah Sullivan, born on April 16, 1823. I couldn't dig down far enough to get to the death date. I need to do that but since I live in Kansas City, Mo, it's going to be a while before I get back to Ky. If you check out the 1830 census you will see a number for males in each age group. The listed number for Uriah will work if you include another male (Elijah maybe?). I don't know but will check out the library for more info. I hired a researcher that can only tell me that Elijah's father is either Edward Uriah or John.

I have still been looking for the parents of your Elijah Sullivan. I dont know the answer for sure, but here is my "guess", based on some facts and my interpretations.

JOhn Sullivan and Edward Uriah Sullivan were brothers and their parents were Jeremiah and Nancy Humphries Sullivan. Uriah married Martha Campbell 1819 in Williamson Co., Tenn. John married Cynthia Gibson circa 1820-25. (I dont know where or when). Circa 1833-34 both brothers moved to Graves Co., Ky.

On the 1860 census an Elijah Sullivan (born 1822) lived next door to John Sullivan. Elijah's wife was Mary, who I estimate he married circa 1843, probably in Graves Co. It seems all of their children were born in Graves Co. Since John and Elijah lived next door, I am guessing that John was Elijah's father. (This isnot your Elijah).

Here is where the guesswork comes in. Your Elijah, born circa 1825, apparently moved to Missouri sometime between 1834-1853. About 1854 ne married "Nancy" , probably in Mo. They had 2 children born in Mo. -- George W. (b. 1855) and Ellen (b. 1859). Then about 1862 they moved to Ballard Co. and had 2 more children -- James M. (b. 1863) and Daisy (??- b. 1867). I dont know what happened to these children and wife Nancy, but circa 1872 Elijah married Sarah Goins. I feel his father was Uriah.

The one item that can change my whole idea on this , is that your Elijah said his mother was born in Georgia. The only female in this picture who was born in Georgia, was Cynthia Gibson.

I am sure this whole discussion thoroughly confuses you , but maybe it gives you some more ideas about this family. Bob Eddings

And just think, everything you just said was exactly what the researcher told me. The only difference is the MO Elijah. Your post refers to an Elijah that moved to MO then to Ballard. This Elijah married a Sarah. Those two had four children. One of those (John Dan) is my gg grandfather. The researcher informed me that Sarah is probably a Goins. Your post mentions that you think that Uriah is Elijah's father.
Is Uriah the same person as Edward Uriah? I found a G.W. Sullivan buried at the Mt.Zion cemetery when I was there this past summer. I will check the dates to see how they compare. Could this G.W. Sullivan be one of Elijah's son's? You haven't confused me yet, but keep trying! I have been looking for any info on this line of Sullivan's for a long, long time. It's been a pleasure. Are you from or living in Ballard?

I have seen yhe name Edward Uriah Sullivan mentioned on the Internet. I have no idea where the name "Edward" came from. On census' it is always listed as Uriah. G.W. Sullivan, is probably George W. Sullivan, born 1855 in Missouri to Elijah and Nancy. On the 1880 census, Elijah had a son listed as Jamie (b. 1873) and another named James (b. 1877). Apparently "Jamie" was your John Dan Sullivan.

Per the Internet's World Connect Project, another researcher listed Eijah as Elisha Sullivan, wife Sarah Ellen Goins and daughter Ollie as Orlinda Mary Sullivan. She died 1901. She had married Curry Richard Busckingham.

Sarah Goins parents (per 1860 census of Graves Co.) were John (b. 1821) and Jane (b. about 1830) Goins. They had 8 children, including Sarah (b. 1844) and Susan (b. 1858).

Myself, I grew up in E.St.Louis, Ill. and about 20 years moved from northern Illinois (near Chicago) to Ky. I now live in Paducah, located about 20-25 miles north of Mayfield. I rarely have gone to Mayfield and dont know much about it.. I browse the Internet -- many names, many locations- trying to find some inquiries that maybe I can help. Bob Eddings
