Dear Barbara,
Yes, the cemetery is associated with the church. The entrance to the cemetery is behind the church and has a old gate covering the entrance.
I was unable to actually get to the cemetery.I talked to a lady who owns the property adjacent to the church. She told me that the path beyond the gate was about 200-300 feet and that the cemetery had about 150-200 headstones - most of them in disrepair.
The reason that I could not get to the cemetery is that the path is overgrown with heavy thickets and brush; further, the path has been blocked by fallen trees created by the January 2009 ice storm.
It would take an herculean effort to clear the path. It is rather sad knowing that the cemetery is encapsulated and even more sad that the cemetery would have to be cleared once reaching it.
Unfortunately, the state of the
Cane Creek Cemetery is not isolated in nature.
I live in
Ohio but do travel to that region in May or June or each year to place flowers on some of my ancestors graves. I will try to see the condition of the cemtery next year but I do not hold out hope for its improvement.
Sincerely,
Lark
