Well, if you go to Allen County, I know there is (or at least used to be) microfilm of the newspaper in the County Clerk's Office. Rather weird, but the library doesn't have a microfilm machine. The Allen County Hist. Soc. may have it also.
There was the Allen County Times and the Scottsville Citizen. There may have been a paper printed at that time, but I don't know whether there are any extant issues. I couldn't find those dates listed at UK Library. You might want to check WKU catalog online.
Allen Co is tough to research because so many records were lost in 1902, but the courthouse does have some deeds prior to that.
When the going gets tough, I try to find property deeds. Sometimes they can solve problems when there are no other records.
I know what you mean about family trees and dates. I am often muttering to myself about the same issue. Also, I love how people ignore places. They've got a man who spent his whole life in New Jersey and all of a sudden they've got a record from Australia or something. Don't bells go off in their heads about something like this? Duh?
Good luck with your search.
